Tim Olmsted, teacher who allegedly called students "black and stupid," is still getting paid

Olmsted lost his job, but he hasn't totally lost his paycheck.
St. Paul teacher Tim Olmsted is still getting paid by taxpayers, nearly six months after he resigned amid accusations he was openly racist in the classroom.

As we told you about last January, Olmsted was placed on leave after he allegedly told five students in his class at Heights Community School on St. Paul's East Side that they're "fat, black, and stupid." He's also accused of segregating black and special education students from whites -- a charge backed up by a substitute teacher who worked in Olmsted's classroom. A new CNN video report reveals that he still has his teaching license and continues to be reimbursed by the district for unused sick days.

Three of the students who were allegedly the target of Olmsted's abuse and their relatives have filed a civil lawsuit against the St. Paul Public School District, alleging that administrators knew about Olmsted's racism but didn't do anything about it. The CNN report indicates Olmsted had a history of misconduct even before the racism allegations, including a five day suspension in 2003 for telling a sexually offensive and inappropriate story about "castrating horses and throwing their testicles into the field for cats to eat" in the classroom, and a 2011 reprimand for "sexually offensive behavior" toward a female co-worker at a holiday party.

CNN actually showed up in the Twin Cities to ask a motorcycle-riding Olmsted about the accusations, but he repeatedly told a reporter he wouldn't comment.

Valeria Silva, superintendent of St. Paul schools, says there's no merit to the accusation district administrators tried to sweep Olmsted's misconduct under the rug.

"We promptly investigated. We responded appropriately," Silva said in a statement to CNN. "And we intend to vigorously defend the lawsuit."

Olmsted's lawyer, for what it's worth, continues to deny the allegations.

This guy seems like a rotten guy and a worse teacher, but he still has rights.  When you get fired, you have to be paid whatever is due to you.

Now, why he still has a teaching license is beyond me.

This story is going to be on Anderson Cooper live sometime in the next coming weeks, please keep an eye out for it and send your support, my mom was a teacher at this school when all of this happened and She was bullied and harassed out of her job fighting for these kids, all of your support really means a lot to her during this hard time.

Sometimes you gotta call 'em as they are. Bet none of the students he said this to showed him any respect in the classroom.

I wonder what would be the blacklash if a black teacher called a white student a stupid cracker. Probably the same but the only difference is he/she would of never resigned.

@CinBlueland  @meesh427 "allegedly told"   "Olmsted's lawyer, for what it's worth, continues to deny the allegations."    Those would be the important quotes you should have read.  Sounds like this guy is a jerk and should be fired but then again it often sounds like those accused of bad things are jerks.  That's why we have these things called trials.  You two should have paid better attention in school.

The GOP should have hired this guy to do "Tell All" about those "Black Kids" and how the Unions are the devil.

@MicheleBachmann  @meesh427 I agree with your premise MB. I've just seen many others released/fired for similar allegations.  Even if cleared their parent company does not want to be associated with the bad press they generated. You also know well and good how bad teachers, cops, firefighters and others have been able to ride on the "paid leave" track for years while under investigation.

The worst one in recent memory was the former Mpls FD Fire Chief who ran the department like a private dating pool and was only demoted instead of being canned.
