Mary Franson wins recount in belated MNGOP election night success story

franson cunniff.jpeg
Franson ended up edging Cunniff by a dozen votes out of more than 21,000 cast.
After election night, Rep. Mary Franson, R-Alexandria, improbably led her Democratic challenger, Bob Cunniff, by a single vote.

Following the discovery of an election night snafu at a polling place in her district -- 32 voters received the wrong ballot -- her lead was revised upward to 11 votes, a margin still close enough to trigger an automatic recount. But with that recount completed this afternoon, it appears Franson will officially remain a part of our lives for at least two more years. Real Capitol View is reporting that will all votes retallied, Franson leads by 12.

That's still remarkably close considering over 21,000 votes were cast in the Franson-Cunniff race. By contrast, when Franson was first elected to office in 2010, she defeated her Democratic challenger by a 50 to 33 percent margin.

She probably didn't do herself any favors during a gaffe-filled year in which she compared food stamps recipients to wild animals; characterized Earth Day as a "Pagan holiday;" filed a salacious restraining order against her ex-boyfriend, McLeod County MNGOP chair Eric Harpel; and faced allegations she drove home drunk from an Alexandria bar.

But a win is a win. And in the wake of a disastrous November 6, 2012, local Republicans will have to take them where they can.

:::: UPDATE ::::
2:19 p.m. -- As pointed out by Jennifer Brooks of the Star Tribune, it should be noted that the recount results are unofficial pending the state canvassing board's certification. The board next meets on December 4.

"she compared food stamps recipients to wild animals"

No, she didn't, Aaron.

"characterized Earth Day as a "Pagan holiday;""

Correctly so.  Worshiping the planet as "Mother Earth" or "Gaia" is paganism.  It's true that "Earth Day" is not officially recognized as a pagan holy day, but that's because the people behind it know that if it were, they couldn't indoctrinate school students so readily.

"filed a salacious restraining order against her ex-boyfriend, McLeod County MNGOP chair Eric Harpel"

So what?  What business is that of yours or anyone else?

"faced allegations she drove home drunk from an Alexandria bar."

Which she didn't and hopefully those behind the false accusation will eventually be brought to justice.

Come on, Aaron.  I thought you were better than this.

@jinxmchue

a. Yes she did.  We've all seen the video.  NEXT!

b. Earth day isn't about worshiping anything.  It's about cleaning up our own shit.

c. Umm...  Birth certificates and blowjobs anyone?  Anyone?

d. You can't be "brought to justice" for suggesting you believed someone to be intoxicated when they drove.  And bar staff see all.  I'm inclined to go with them on this one.

@MicheleBachmann Yep. Find something -- anything -- to distract you from the fact that you lost fair and square despite your side's lies.

@jinxmchue @MicheleBachmann I don't think this was some kind of glorious victory for Franson. To barely win in a strongly conservative area shows how *weak* she is as a candidate.

Bachmann is similar. She has an R+6 district, which means that she should win by 12 points in a "normal" year -- not by 1.2 points after spending more than any other Representative in the country.

It's not a "distraction" to say that Bachmann and Franson will serve a useful purpose by making continued wacky public statements that will highlight how out-of-touch the MNGOP is with most Minnesotans. This polarising, eliminationist rhetoric replete with perpetual outrage and imminent doom is something that only appeals to a relatively small minority in the State.

Franson's miniscule margin of victory doesn't change that situation at all.

@jinxmchue Mary Franson drove drunk from a bar and used her political connections to kill the story.  To this day she has yet to produce a single witness that backs up her story.  She was drunk and could have murdered people.  Why do you insist on supporting the reckless child murderer.

@marevitals You have a weird obsession with me.  Also your posts aren't funny.  You seem like a whacky uncle who loves dumb cheesy jokes.

@MB - I'm pretty sure everyone who reads the Blotter thinks you are housed up somewhere where your only outlet to the world is to comment on Aaron's posts.  Fanatic? Yes.

@_Joe_   I'm trolling the psychopath Franson defender.  I'm pretty sure it really is Mary Franson.

@MicheleBachmann Dude!  You are worse than Michael Moore!  For the most part we are on the same page, but you go SO far beyond rational discourse, you make everyone look stupid.  Please, for the sake of the adults in the room, rein it in.

It must be nice to hide behind anonymity so you can continue to spread defamatory lies unabated and without consequences.

The burden of proof is on YOU to prove that she drove drunk, not on her to prove a negative (that she didn't).

Is it hard for you to live being such a moron?
