Minnetonka principal says yoga pants expose too much "leg and backside," requests crackdown

In the principal's estimation, pants of this sort are making Minnetonka students a little too hot and bothered for academics.

In September, a Minnetonka-area parent published a letter in Lake Minnetonka Patch decrying the fact that more and more girls are wearing sexy-fitting yoga pants to school.

"What's next? Bikinis in biology?" Jay Corn wrote (Corn is also the editor of Lake Minnetonka Patch).

Well, apparently Corn and Minnetonka High School Principal Dave Adney are on a similar wavelength, because yesterday, Adney wrote a letter to parents requesting they encourage their girls to keep the bun-huggers at home.

But Adney and Corn differ in one respect -- whereas Corn called for an out-and-out ban on yoga pants, Adney decided to rely on the less-coercive power of persuasion.

Here's an excerpt from Corn's letter to the editor (emphasis mine):
I'm sure yoga pants are comfortable, but so are bathrobes and karate gis. I don't see girls wearing them to homeroom, however. Yoga pants are for--well, yoga--and have no place in school. They serve exactly one purpose--to draw boys' attention to areas fathers would rather not talk about or mention by name...

Parents who allow their teenager to wear yoga pants to school should reevaluate their decision. I'm all for allowing girls to wear what they wish, but yoga pants simply don't belong in school. Allowing them in class sends a wrong message about acceptable behavior and sets a general bad precedent on how our girls should present themselves to society.
And here's the entirety of Adney's letter to parents (emphasis mine):
Hello Parents of Minnetonka High School students,

This is Dave Adney with an update on high school fashion trends and a request.

As the weather gets colder we have noticed a fashion trend with our young women. Many of them choose to wear leggings usually made of spandex or another form of tight fitting material. In past years this has not been a major problem since fashion norms called for a long sweatshirt, jersey or sweater to be worn in conjunction with the leggings. This fall another pattern has emerged and we are requesting parent support.

Some of our girls have chosen to wear t-shirts with the leggings, thus exposing more leg and backside area. This can be highly distracting for other students and I am asking your assistance. If your daughters choose to wear leggings or other tight fitting clothing please support our goal of keeping things covered up. We encourage students to dress modestly and this trend is definitely a move away from our general expectations.

Thanks

Dave Adney
"Highly distracting for other students"? We'll give Principal Adney credit -- he's obviously a highly skilled euphamiser.

Speaking as a male teen, these people are right on. With the number of stupid girls wearing them now and think that guys won't or shouldn't stare. It's actually kind of annoying how distracting it is. I'm still shocked that their parents allow the girls to go out showing off so much of their asses and cameltoes.

Adney was correct about the grinding and once again he is correct about not showing butt crack and camel toe!

Adney has serious issues that he wants everyone else to share in!

Good point jonathon, they might as well just be naked. I know one thing for sure, when I have kids one day- I'm going to tell my nanny to teach my kids about the internets

Newsflash people, its not gonna matter what they wear, teenage boys will be teenage boys and still look and be distracted. Seriously, much more pressing things to attend to, such as oh Idk educating these students. Crackdown on clothing, good Lord this country gets more and more ridiculous by the day.

Thanks juan. I'm not saying its the girls fault and that everyone should dress like nuns, but if u show your ass, don't get all offended when people notice it. My wife works in a school and says a lot of the girls these days dress like sLuts

Brie you obviously missed Dans point. All He is saying is that it is distracting for a MALE brain. Kudos to you for having it all figured out but the bottom line is it IS distracting. Same reason HS girls can't wear tube tops or spaghetti straps.

I see nothing has changed in 5 years, back when I was at Minnetonka he was obsessed with 'grinding' at school dances and made a series of videos for the morning announcements to discourage it. Perhaps he should consider worrying about everybody coming to school stoned out of their minds and all of the 'perfect' children who cheat on every single test and assignment.

Dan- I do think it's ridiculous that you seem to promote the idea that boys and men lack even the slightest hint of self control. And you are okay with that. I am attracted to women just like many males are, if I see an attractive woman it's not hard to appreciate her beauty without interrupting what I am doing. And what does "dress so slutty" even mean? What does *slut* even mean? A woman who likes sex? Well that's most women. A woman who has lots of sex? That's a woman acting like a man is 'allowed' to, and without women to have sex with straight men would be having sex with whom exactly? If you can't define your point, maybe you shouldn't be promoting it eh?

Wow, what a load of crap. Basically they're making the girls responsible for how the boys react to them, instead of making it clear to the boys and pervy males that they're responsible for their reactions.

Oh for fucks sake.  They're fairly warm and comfortable, and not everything a girl does is to get dudely attention.  Sometimes we just want to be comfortable without rocking stained, holey sweatpants, and yoga pants seemed like a good alternative.  Maybe we should have government issued fleece caftans to protect our virtue.

I find it funny that women are suprised this is distracting. Like its our fault our brains work that way. Where what u want, but don't get all offended when u catch a guy checking out your ass when your wearing spandex

Uniforms! I wore a uniform in grade school and high school. It was great. Totally takes away the stress of having to dress a "certain way"

Sounds like the Principal is either distracted or jealous.

While I think yoga pants should be only worn for its intended purpose & its tacky to wear them as every day wear, I am more creeped out by the male adminstrators' complaints. Clearly they are no thinking with their brains.

Girls dress so slutty in high school these days, might as well wear yoga pants too and show everyone their ass

I don't think 16 year olds need to be told what to wear. Especially not in a country that allows some of them to get married, end their education, and pre-join the military. If you can make major life decisions and life-long commitments at 16, you can certainly choose what to cover yourself with.

I don't think 16yr olds need to show off their camel toe...

I used to be a manager at a job where a lot of young people worked. I constantly had to ask girls to wear something to cover their midsection when wearing leggings. I've seen more camel toe than Lawrence of Arabia.

Dress a girl in a trash bag and teenage boys will still drool. It's part of growing up. Oh know we better make sure these kids aren't masturbating while were at it.

I, for one, would love it if our school administrators cared more about what kind of education girls were getting in their school instead of worrying about what they're wearing.

The students need to learn how to dress somewhere, might as well start in school. Hopefully, as adults you're not wearing yoga pants to work unless you are a Yoga Instructor.

You know what else is distracting? Pants at the knees, shirts with messages, low cut shirts and super low cut jeans, piercings and crazy colored hair. Let's tell the kids not to wear those too (if you didn't get it, I'm being sarcastic a little bit). If you are going to restrict certain clothing, you need to be careful. I understand the point, but if you want the kids to dress a certain way, make the move to uniforms. Give me a break! My daughter wears yoga pants to school all the time because, as swimmer with fairly bulky muscle mass in her thighs, comfortable jeans are hard to find and she does not want to wear baggy sweat pants all the time. She either wears leggings and long tops or yoga pants and sweatshirts.

@crazedseepies Obviously your parents lack the ability to teach you to just not stare.
Let's make sure all the boys never SAG and show off their distractingly disgusting underwear. Pants belong at the waist, not below the butt!

@Jonathon Richter we all had dress codes growing up no muscle shirts tube tops crop tops short shorts  clothing with weapons or drugs as a theme  as well as other understandable and easy to follow rules

@crankyface Or maybe they should all be forced to wear chastity belts over the yoga pants to send the correct message...
