Target defends Thanksgiving opening: "There are more volunteers than shifts to fill"

Categories: Target

Why the earlier opening?
The holiday season is highly competitive, and Thanksgiving weekend is one of the busiest shopping times of the year. Target's opening time was carefully evaluated with our guests and team members in mind. Our opening time this year reflects the feedback we have heard from our guests - many prefer to shop following their family gatherings rather than in the very early hours of the morning.

Will executives have to work on Thanksgiving?
At Target we believe that it's important for our team -- and particularly our leaders -- to be actively involved throughout the weekend. As the doors open Thursday night, the majority of our leaders at headquarters and throughout the country will be in stores meeting our guests, working together with our store teams and celebrating their outstanding efforts.

How early will team members have to be in the store on Thanksgiving?
Typically hourly team members are asked to clock in at a store no more than five minutes before their scheduled shift begins. The majority of our team will need to arrive less than one hour prior to the store's opening.

Are team members forced to work or prohibited from requesting Thanksgiving or Black Friday off?
There is no corporate policy mandating that people have to work on Thanksgiving or Black Friday and our staffing needs vary from store to store. Across the company, about one-third of Target's store team members are scheduled to work on Thanksgiving and less than two-thirds of our team members are scheduled to work on Friday. Team member preferences were considered when creating the schedules and our store leadership teams are continuing to have conversations with their team members to address any concerns.

What about the petitions that are circulating online?
We respect the right of all of our team members and guests to express their opinions. We encourage our team members to speak directly with their team leadership to work together to address any concerns they may have.

What kind of additional pay do team members get?
All hourly team members who work on a national holiday, including Thanksgiving, receive pay equal to time and a half their hourly pay rate and all team members who work specified hours on Thanksgiving and Friday will also receive additional shift and holiday premium pay.

I work at Target, I was scheduled on Thanksgiving, and never was asked whether I wanted to or not. I had to put up quite a fight so I could have the evening off so I could be home to spend the time with family and relatives.

Do they mean volunteer like "volunteer or we will give your job to someone else"?

I highly, highly doubt that they have loads of "volunteers" and knowing how they handled their whole unionization thing.....I'm guessing their persuasive tactics led to any "so-called" volunteers.......8pm....really???? so sad

Why doesn't anyone complain that McDonald's and Super America are open on Thanksgiving? It's retail and it's a given you'll work on a holiday. Quit picking on Target! K-Mart has 3 door busters on Thanksgiving...go pick on them instead!

I have to work overnight Thanksgiving eve and Thanksgiving night, because I work at a gas station. I don't see anyone throwing up petitions for all the gas stations to close down because it's 'unfair' for anyone to have to work on Thanksgiving. No, you probably need some gas on Thanksgiving, and that's why we're here. It's life, and I will enjoy the holiday pay I receive on my paycheck. It's not a big deal that some big box retail outlets are open for a few hours on Thanksgiving. Their employees will be compensated.

It's interesting to watch the TV ads for Mills Fleet Farm... quite a difference. Check it out.

I believe Target on this one. I would be shocked if one-third of their employees failed to crawl through broken glass for more hours in an effort to keep their families' heads above water or their tuition bills paid.

That doesn't make this right. Do we need a return to blue laws that forbid corporations from making people work on holidays and maybe even Sundays? I'm not sure, I just know that that's a decision best made by people and not corporations.

Must be hard to meet with store team members when you have private planes, cell phones and ipads, weekdays off to make up for the weekend worked days and assistants. Store team members are laughing at your dishonesty.

"...As the doors open Thursday night, the majority of our leaders at headquarters and throughout the country will be in stores meeting our guests, working together with our store teams and celebrating their outstanding efforts."

The last sentence is particularly saccharine and eyeroll-inducing.  Like anyone believes that.
