Target's decision to open Thanksgiving evening sparks renewed "save Thanksgiving" petitions

Target is following Walmart's lead and opening on Thanksgiving this year.
Last Thanksgiving, Target held off on opening its doors until the clock struck midnight and Black Friday began. Nonetheless, more than 200,000 people supported a petition asking Target to remain closed until later in the morning on Black Friday so workers could enjoy Thanksgiving with their families.

This morning, Target announced that this year, stores will be opening on 9 p.m. Thanksgiving evening. Predictably, the announcement sparked renewed petitions asking Target to at least hold off until midnight on Black Friday, including one written by a California Target employee that already has the support of nearly 160,000 people.

Here's the new petition written by Casey St. Clair of Corona, California (to support her cause, click here):
I have worked at Target for six years and I really enjoy my job. Thanksgiving, though, is one of the three days us retail workers get off a year: a day most all of us spend with family we only get to see on that day. I have no problem with Black Friday. I thought it was interesting the first year I worked the 4am opening. Last year's opening at midnight was pushing it. By the time I left around 8am, I was absolutely exhausted.

I am a recent transplant to California with my boyfriend. I don't have any family out here and having to work on Black Friday prevents me from going home to the east coast to see my family. My boyfriend does have some family out here so Thanksgiving is the one day we get to spend with people we know. I currently work two jobs, substitute teaching and work Target at nights and weekends, so having Thanksgiving off really does give me that one day to relax and visit family I otherwise have no time to see.

I just heard that one of Target's top competitors, Walmart, will open at 8pm on Thanksgiving this year. Since workers need to show up sometimes hours before the story officially opens, this will take much of Thanksgiving away from retail employees across the country. Target can take the high road and save Thanksgiving for employees like me and our families by saying no to "Thanksgiving Creep." Will you join me and ask Target to give Thanksgiving back to families and not open on Thanksgiving evening?
As mentioned by St. Clair, Target's announcement comes on the heels of Walmart deciding to 'kick off Black Friday shopping earlier than ever' this year with an 8 p.m. opening time on Thanksgiving. With Target following suit today, it looks like just another manifestation of the race to the bottom.

I don't see what the big deal is.  We, like many families, are not Christian, so we don't celebrate Thanksgiving anyway. Its nice that we will have a place to shop.

Wah Wah Wah!  More crybabies who CHOSE to work in a field that requires weekends and certain holidays.  Do you hear police officers, firefighters, doctors and hospital staff whine because they have to work holidays?  No one put a fucking gun to your head forcing you to work at Target.  If you want a Mon-Fri 9-5 day job with weekends and holidays off, go get one.  No one gives a shit about your pathetic sob stories.

Gotta love a company that used to innovate...desperately grabbing straws to drive sales. They used to ignore Wal Mart....now they are basically reacting to everything the other retailers are doing. Good thing the average age is 27 there because its apparently easier to fire people that try and innovate and hire new rounds of yes men/women.

@Frank Wells its not a Christian holiday (Xmas, Easter), so that is pretty much irrelevant.

@keny1 You know that they told workers like a few weeks before two years ago that they were going to add an extra day. Its one thing if you sign up for it, its another if its thrown in your lap after you have made plans. And fyi, I didn't work at stores. I worked at HQ for 8 years and left on my own accord. If you don't recognize the new american culture and the decline of the family and education as it relates to the modern business world...well I can't find enough crayons to explain it to you

@k2yeb I agree...I have worked at Target 7 years and only see a decline in their ability to be a leading retailer.....I think they should open at 5 A.M Friday morning..Even if their competitors are opening on thanksgiving...Not only does that distinguish them as being respectful to their Team Members, but they would also bank on money since their competition will run out of their sale items by then...Another good idea would be to have major amazing sales the day before thanksgiving.  I'm sure these ideas have been tossed around and ignored, of course.

@Lydia  @k2yeb  @Frank  No, they were Pilgrims...No known religion...Thanksgiving is to thank others for giving, hence the name...To spend quality time with family...Statements like this just shows how FCKED up people can be in this world.
