Gary Schiff announcing campaign for Minneapolis mayor
|Schiff will announce his bid for mayor at noon today.|
Schiff launched an exploratory committee last year, long before R.T. Rybak announced he wouldn't run for re-election. He filed paperwork in December, but wouldn't commit to a run, saying he'd make a firm decision sometime in January.
Two of his fellow councilmembers, Betsy Hodges and Don Samuels, have also filed paperwork for a mayoral campaign.
A University of Minnesota alumnus, Schiff joined the City Council in 2001. He calls himself a "policy-driven advocate for small businesses, sustainability, neighborhood-based planning, public transit, and civil rights." Schiff helped pass the law allowing microbreweries to open up Minneapolis, and has been a harsh critic of Rybak over the years, particularly on the city's handling of youth violence.
Schiff will make his formal announcement to the press at the Harriet Brewery today.
