Minnesotans overwhelmingly favor assault weapons ban

If a majority of Minnesotans had their way, "assault weapons" of this sort would be illegal.
Despite what the Pine County Sheriff thinks, the latest Public Policy Polling survey of Minnesota voters indicates Minnesotans overwhelming favor an assault weapons ban.

SEE ALSO:
-- Minnesota Republicans want Norm Coleman vs. Mark Dayton in 2014
-- Minnesota Republicans want Michele Bachmann vs. Al Franken in 2014

Fifty-four percent "support banning assault weapons," while 37 percent are opposed. Ten percent aren't sure where they stand.

Some might take issue with the terminology used in the question, however. After all, asking respondents if they favor banning "assault weapons" is one thing -- asking them about "semi-automatic rifles" is another, and may result in different responses.

Anyway, here's a few other interesting tidbits from the polling (for the full results, including a link to the survey crosstabs, click here):

-- Forty-seven percent support legalizing gay marriage, compared to 45 percent opposed. But 75 percent of voters support either gay marriage or civil unions.

-- The NRA isn't as unpopular as you might think. Forty-four percent have a favorable opinion of it, compared to 43 percent who have an unfavorable opinion.

-- We love us some Amy Klobuchar. With a 65 percent approval rating, she's "one of the most popular Senators in the country," according to PPP's poll summary.

-- Democrats would like to see Hillary Clinton emerge as the Democratic candidate for president in 2016. "[E]ven with Klobuchar in the mix, 59% of Minnesota Democrats want Clinton to be the next nominee with Biden at 14% and Klobuchar at 11%," PPP writes.

-- Meanwhile, MNGOPers really dislike Barack Obama. Fifty-four percent support impeaching him, for God's sake, compared to just 24 percent opposed.

44% support banning assault weapons and its called, "overwhelmingly." 44% have a favorable opinion of the NRA and it's called, "not as popular as you might think." I thought City Pages went out of business a long time ago?

I think more needs to be done to keep them out of the hands of people who should not have them. I have been a gun owner and I enjoy guns. I think that shooting as an activity has contributed considerably to our economy. Also, while I don't think anyone "needs" an assault rifle with or with out a high capacity mag. I think you should be able to own one if you wish and you fit the requirements for ownership. I do not support a ban.

@Sebastian Galdames  In 2010 Minnesota had 2 murders in which a rifle of any type was used.  In 2011 that number increased to 3, but overall murders dropped from 90 to 73 in that same year.  I share the same lack of support for a ban as you do.  So do the statistics.

This legislation is a solution looking for a problem to solve.

@digitalprotocol @_Joe_ The proposals that will be heard in Minnesota this week DO take away guns.  Even if a person complies with the ridiculous registration requirements for a pre-ban purchased modern sporting rifle, the estate of that person will be required to surrender the firearm to the state or render it completely inoperable upon the original owner's death with no compensation for the value of the firearm.  That is confiscation of property and yes, somebody IS talking about it.

digitalprotocol

@_Joe_ besides, she is also a complete fool since nobody has ever said anything about taking guns away. Nobody. Ever.

@_Joe_   she made a very inflammatory statement. She dared someone to take them, I deemed that to be an easy task.

Go ahead and impeach Obama, GOP. What would be the grounds? Who knows, who cares. Just please get on with finding your bogus reason, because whatever you decide, Democrats will get to run on it in 2014.

@webcelt Calm down.  No one wants to impeach your Messiah.  The 24% of us are just going to sit back and watch him bankrupt the country, so that in 2016, we can gleefully say, "TOLD YA!!"  :)

Newtown shooter used hand guns not assault rifles. Assault rifle was recovered in his vehicle, so I don't see how that could have been used. Why then would the press say it was an assault rifle...either that or there was more than one shooter, either way the media and their anti gun bias misrepresented the facts.

Luke Copa is correct, they found the assault rifle in his vehicle. So

The assault weapons ban is meant to deny a citizens ability for fire superiority if ever a nation has to rise up against the gov't. Law enforcement have assault weapons, the military have them. This would take whatever tactical balance away from good law abiding citizens. We would be labled terrorists and dealt with accordingly. If you personally don't like firearms that is fine. Personally I don't like them either although I realize the need to protect ones self, property, and loved ones. Please be careful on what ban/social reform bandwagon you ride on. Someday you may wish you thought differently.

Tell me a time when humans were nice? I prefer to be prepared because humans are and always have been wild animals with better than average motor skills. It is fairly nice in our country because we can protect ourselves. Ask some poor lad in any African nation how it feels to have no gun when "peacekeepers" from every natural resource needing nation pass them out to rebels. City pages...go back to covering local strip clubs and hirable whores as that is what you know best.

Poll outside of sheep herd Minneapolis. Good thing there is already 2 registered guns for every one citizen. And mine will be grandfathered in as legal as soon as Obama gets his way. Go on sheep give up your weapons to the government. They are certainly here for your benefit.

Evan, that's a silly argument. There will never be a point where you can't say the money will be better spent somewhere else.
