Around 6:20 this morning, an American Airlines pilot was removed from his plane and taken into custody after someone on board noticed alcohol on his breath while he performed pre-flight checks.
The pilot reportedly failed a breathalyzer test and was taken to Fairview Southdale Hospital for blood testing, the results of which won't be available for weeks. The legal limit for commercial pilots is .04, so it doesn't take much imbibing for pilots to land themselves in hot water.
Passengers hadn't yet boarded the plane. WCCO reports the flight in question was American Eagle 4590 to New York.
As news of the pilot's arrest surfaced, American Airlines, owner of the plane the under-the-influence pilot was about to fly, released this statement:
American Eagle has a well-established substance abuse policy that is designed to put the safety of our customers and employees first. We are cooperating with authorities and conducting a full internal investigation. The pilot will be withheld from service pending the outcome of the investigationThe pilot, who has not yet been identified, is expected to be booked into Hennepin County Jail today.
