Al Franken already wants you to open your pocketbook for his 2014 reelection campaign

If Franken goes up against the always well-funded Bachmann in 2014, he'll need all the dough he can get.

There really is no political offseason anymore.

Just over three months removed from our last regularly scheduled election, Al Franken is already asking you to kick in some dough for his 2014 reelection campaign.

Here's his new internet ad, which was first spotted on the Pioneer Press website by Mike Dec. When we asked Dec for a screengrab, he told us he spotted it on the City Pages website too:

As you can see, the ad -- paid for by "Al Franken for Senate 2014" -- expresses Franken's support for Rep. Rick Nolan's recently unveiled effort to rollback the Supreme Court's 2010 Citizens United ruling, a ruling which opened the floodgates wider than before for corporate money in American politics.

But as we noted yesterday, a bill to that end has much brighter prospects in the Democrat-controlled Senate than it does in the GOP-controlled House. Since passage in both chambers is necessary for it to become law, any effort to legislate away Citizens United will probably end up mostly being an exercise in political theater.

Post-election polling indicates Franken will be hard to beat in 2014. It also indicates MNGOPers would like to see Michele Bachmann emerge as the Republican who tries to take him out. An accomplished comedian versus an accomplished unintentional comedian? Sounds like it has the makings of a wildly entertaining -- and expensive -- race!

Senators have to raise money as soon as results are announced election night. This is the 2014 cycle. Everyone planning to run next year is focused on fundraising. Rick Nolan isn't the only one pretty unhappy about the time it takes up. Now that unlimited corporate and billionaire money can be thrown at them, politicians have good reason to think they never have enough money.

@MicheleBachmann I own a restaurant that grosses $1 million in sales per year. And because I am a smart conservative, I have a smart tax accountant. With (legal) deductions and (legal) tax loopholes, I pay ZERO dollars in taxes. Now, before you accuse me of being part of the 1%, I am not. I may gross $1 million in sales, when you take into account food and beverage costs, labor costs, MN business taxes, Federal business taxes, as well as the benefits that I provide to my employees, do you know what my net profit is (considering that I work 70 hours a week?)

Senatorial terms are every six years, House terms are two. So every House member is likewise already asking for 2014 donations... so why is Franken's position news?
