Stefano reportedly informed his players of the news following Maple Grove's season-ending loss to Centennial last night.
A source tells City Pages Stefano told his players his contract isn't being renewed. Stefano's ouster is also being reported by the Star Tribune.
The beginning of the end of Stefano's Maple Grove tenure came last month, when he and 13 players were suspended for reasons the school wouldn't discuss. Days later, we reported that a sex tape involving at least one player was at the root of the scandal. According to our sources, the tape was shot at a private home in December.
Days later, without discussing specifics, Stefano characterized the scandal as "by far [his] worst experience" during his 32-year coaching career.
Then, early this month, a motion to sever ties between the Osseo-Maple Grove youth hockey association and the Maple Grove varsity program was placed on an association meeting agenda. The item was pulled before the meeting occurred, but it nonetheless reflected how little confidence the Maple Grove hockey community had in Stefano.
All the controversy, coupled with a mediocre season (Maple Grove finished 14-12) was apparently enough to convince Maple Grove officials to take their hockey program in a different direction.
