Royce White says his problems began when he smoked pot in Forest Lake

White says he's still feeling the effects of a toke he took in Forest Lake when he was 16. I could probably say the same.
After a brilliant season at Iowa State, Royce White -- a former Minnesota Mr. Basketball and two-time state high school champion, once with DeLeSalle and once with Hopkins -- was a first-round draft selection of the Kevin McHale-led Houston Rockets last June.

He hasn't yet played in an NBA game, and it isn't because he's suffering from a physical injury. White's problems are psychological. He readily admits he suffers from an anxiety disorder that involves a severe fear of flying. And during the course of a recent interview with Chuck Klosterman, White, 21, traces his problems back to a fateful experience five years ago in Forest Lake.

From the Klosterman piece:
White's problems began at age 16, in a cabin outside of Minneapolis, on the first (and only) day he ever smoked marijuana. The episode may superficially seem like a standard case of weed-induced paranoia, but that's not how it felt to White. "I think it was in Forest Lake, Minnesota," he recalls. "I had an out-of-body experience. It felt like I was watching myself have the experience. It was so traumatic for me, and I had such a bad reaction, I started having panic attacks for the next two or three months, in rapid succession. Sometimes two or three a day."
As a Forest Lake native myself, I can tell you from experience that many kids go off the rails after they start toking in Flaketown. Though, in fairness, the cases I'm familiar with involved much more than a single toke of herb, that's for sure.

White hopes to get his basketball career back on beginning track today when he reports to the Rockets' Developmental League team in the Rio Grande Valley. But if the Klosterman piece can be believed, White might be less-than-ready for game action. During his recent break from basketball, White said he's been working out "very sparingly" and has only been shooting baskets "once a week." Not exactly the stuff of champions!

whether he's lying or not, fuck all of you for calling someone WITH A CHEMICAL IMBALANCE IN THEIR BRAIN.  This is the same reason I can't smoke anymore.  I smoked for almost four years no problem, then all of the sudden one night I started having panic attacks, and every time since then had been absolutely awful, so I stopped.  I can handle other drugs no problem but pot can trigger underlying anxiety and push over the tipping point, in opposite effect of most people.  I fucking hate it when people say that your being a baby, pussy, dumb ass, etc., because I'm not smoking.  Fuck that, I have a chemical imbalance that literally fucks me up when I smoke.

Those who are apologizing for Royce have no idea what kind of con-artist this kid has been, beginning with his stay here in Minnesota. He milks a so called 'mental illness' for attention, meanwhile stealing laptops out of dorm rooms and posting videos on YouTube claiming he is the greatest player out there and that no one understands him. He has always been a cry baby, ask Rocket fans. He has no respect in the NBA, and he ruined what would have been a promising career because he constantly wants sympathy and attention. There are people who truly suffer from mental illness, and then there is Royce White.

Sounds like propaganda. I thought we had evolved past this nonsense as a species.

My brother has seen Mr. White rolling a blunt in the hallway of  a well known apartment complex near U of M.  He was a huge smoker while at U of M, multiple sources can confirm this.

He needs to MAN up and get that money they are throwing at him. Such talent, with basketball and computers...

As someone who thinks the herbals are a good thing (and shouldn't be discriminated on for those who get positive benefits from it), not everybodys body reacts the same way. Some people can't drink milk. It doesn't mean they're a baby just because their body can't handle milk it just means it doesnt work with their body. Would you be talking shit if he was lactose intolerant? Probably not. Or maybe the shit was laced, who knows, either way, the article was written in a real dick-ish way. At least I'd feel bad if I wrote this shit.

High levels of being a baby who already is susceptible to anxiety is probably the main reason for his panic attack. Reefer madness

I dont know why you would bother sharing this, if you think pot or hemp are bad. You are a dumbass.

Comments like these are the problem I have of people not understanding why I don't get high. This very same thing happened to me. I haven't smoked in over ten years because of it. I don't know the bio-chemistry well enough to explain it, but I did have a psychiatrist explain to me that in some people the THC has the opposite effect of most people and can trigger a severe panic disorder. It happened to comedian Steve Martin too, actually.

Inaccurate headline. Taking articles out of context isn't cool. Leave that mess up to CNN

This sort of reaction is rare, but not unheard-of.  I knew a kid growing up who was perfectly fine until he first smoked pot, around the age of 13 (we out on the prairie weren't nearly as pure as we like to pretend).  I don't know how to clinically describe what happened to him, but as a 13 year-old, I thought the kid had a full-blown psychotic break and never really came back.  Unfortunately, all he ever wanted to do after that was smoke pot, and he got crazier and crazier.  He thought he was Jesus Christ; he tried to kill his sister a number of times; he tried to burn down the family home at least twice.  He was flat-out psychotic.  Since many, many other kids were smoking the same pot and continued to do so for years, and none of the rest of us flipped out like that, I don't think it was an issue about the pot.  Something in him was dormant, balanced on the razor's edge, and the pot just tipped the scale.

Too bad if that's what happened to young Mr. White.  Once one's mental chemical equilibrium is disrupted, it can take years to regain.
