Gassman wants to make Iowa the only state to prohibit no-fault divorce in hopes it'll help his granddaughter keep her pants on.
Iowa Rep. Tedd Gassman, R-Scarville -- a town that borders Minnesota -- wants to ban no-fault divorce. The reason? He's concerned divorce results in children who live with single parents sleeping around.

As hard to fathom as that logic is, it's the argument he made on behalf of his bill during a news conference Monday. Even harder to believe? With the support of six other Republicans, Gassman's bill was approved by a House Subcommittee and may get another hearing.

From Radio Iowa:
Under the proposed legislation, parents with kids under the age of 18 could not get a no-fault divorce. Instead, they'd have to show a spouse was guilty of adultery, had been sent to prison on a felony conviction, had physically or sexually abused someone in the family, or had abandoned the family for at least a year.

"This basically is an attempt on my part to keep fathers in the home," Gassman said [during the hearing]. "I sincerely believe that the family is the foundation of this nation and this nation will go the direction of our families. If our families break up, so will this nation."
Here's a transcript of the jaw-dropping remarks Gassman made to reporters on Monday, followed by the raw video footage:
You know, in my opinion, it's time to look out for the children, instead of constantly worrying about the adults. If my daughter and son-in-law would've had some time to work this out, we would have a much different situation today.

And there's a 16-year-old girl in this whole mix now -- guess what? What are the possibilities of her being more promiscuous? What are the possibilities of all these other things surrounding her life that a 16-year-old girl with hormones raging can get herself into?

Consider it another example of a point we alluded to yesterday. In this day and age, it's generally not a good idea for men -- especially Republican men who happen to be elected officials -- to open their mouths and talk about anything having to do with sex.
