Minnesota Stars change name to "Minnesota United FC"

The second-division soccer team announced this morning that it's rebranding the franchise as "Minnesota United FC." That's not to be confused with Minnesotans United, the lobbying group pushing for gay marriage in Minnesota right now.

The move comes just months after Twin Cities businessman Bill McGuire purchased the financially troubled Stars. McGuire was formerly the CEO of UnitedHealth Group, but left in 2006 during a scandal over problems with how the company issued stock options.

"Soccer is a global game," said McGuire in a statement. "We live in a diverse and world-class community that should be part of the fabric of the 'Beautiful Game.' Soccer is also the fastest-growing sport in the country. Minnesota United FC will ensure that Minnesotans have a successful local professional team they can easily access and support."

Minnesota United will play its first game on April 6 against the San Antonio Scorpions at the Metrodome.
