Barnard, this morning: "This is the first time I've ever done the show with tears in my eyes."
-- Update at bottom of post --

:::: UPDATE :::: Tom Barnard was very angry on Twitter before rehab announcement [TIMELINE]

On his KQRS morning show today, legendary Twin Cities radio host Tom Barnard said he's entering rehab and will be taking a leave of absence from his show (see update at bottom of this post).

"I wouldn't want to be in a situation where I either croak or I hurt someone really badly," Barnard said, adding that he has gotten into the habit of drinking too much wine and using pills both to fall asleep and wake up. "I just go through periods [where] I just cannot sleep at all."

In addition to insomnia and substance struggles, Barnard, 61, also cited anger issues.

"I don't want to be pissed off... I just don't want to be angry anymore," he said.

Barnard added he might begin treatment as soon as this afternoon or Monday at Hazelden.

During his nearly three decades on the radio (much of that time on KQRS), Barnard has consistently generated controversy and unprecedented ratings. But he said going public with his problems and taking a break from the radio in order to deal with them is "kind of like this big weight is being lifted off my shoulders."

At least one Minnesota radio host suspects Barnard's rehab announcement is a "hack April Fools bit," but Barnard insisted he's serious about treatment.

Barnard said he's "absolutely committed to do this, or I wouldn't be talking about it on the show."

:::: UPDATE ::::

Barnard's attorney, Ron Rosembaum, says Barnard will not be taking a leave of absence while he receives treatment after all.

According to a Pioneer Press report, Barnard "wants to give outpatient treatment a shot before committing to a stay at the facility" and plans to be on the air Monday morning.

Oops I forgot to add what a fat pig he is, he is constantly putting down other people but he is a fat ass himself, I wish Terri T. could kick him in the nuts lol.

Once he realizes he isn't above the rest of us he probably won't need those pills anymore.  He is the most pompous asshole I have ever had the displeasure of listening to. He's a dick to pretty much everyone, and he seems to believe that ever single word he speaks is gold. Most of the time he is boring, sexist and racist.  Most of all he is just a good OLD asshole.

I could never understand what people saw in this show, he's not funny, none of them are funny. And I don't know the guy personally, but he seems like a REAL DICK! lol

The honeymoon period is over, this morning he was as racist as ever... he and his little minions- Mordahl and his little racist agenda is really getting old too.  Barnard complained this morning that City Pages said he had a problem with pills.  Like any "quasi" celebrity, they put their personal crap out there and then complain when it gets made into a new story.    I had really hoped he was going to take a leave of absence and now I'm sad he's still on the show.  He obviously did this for publicity. period.

I found this article interesting and gave the author credence, until he called Aaron Imholte a 'radio host'. That idiot is more like a 9th grader with a squeaky mickey mouse voice who couldn't form an intelligent thought/sentence if his life depended on it. The proof is in the linked-out tweet. Barnard, like him or not, is THE GUY in Minnesota radio. Not since Steve Cannon, Hines/Berglund and Knapp & Donuts has one broadcast personality achieved what Tommy B has... HE IS the 800 lb gorilla every MN broadcaster aspires to be. Next time you quote-out a 'radio-host' use someone who has the listener's respect and  actually tries to make a difference in the industry. Find out what Dave Ryan says about it, or maybe John Hines. Talk to someone who knows something...

Good for him. Regardless who it is it takes courage to admit a problem and commit to taking necessary steps.

KQ plays the same boring classic rock since the 70s. Now with internet radio you can listen to a broader variety of more deserving classic rock. Barnard was just an overpaid shock jock and KQ just went for ratings rather than content. Explore other types of music and talk broadcast on the inter webs.

Pills wine and anger.....not a bad name for a Band.  Good luck to Mr Bernard.

Actually I ought to separate the two topics. Yeah I don't like Barnard's show, but I really am curious what the rules are about obscenities. I listen to a morning show where they've had to dump their own host when she used an obscenity and they're constantly terrified of FCC fines. Then I listen to KQ for five minutes and they don't care at all. I have no idea what the rules are.

I dunno about millions. I don't think anyone in local radio is making millions.

Actually isn't Barnard saying he's the hater and doesn't want to be anymore?

Nice sweeping generalization to assume anyones political beliefs based solely on the fact that they dislike this guy. It could also be that hes just not funny.

I've always wished I had a longer commute so I could listen to more of the show. Good luck, Tom. And if you hate him, he doesn't give a fuck, so fuck off.

What a tragic and disgusting human being Tom is. Even though he's going to rehab, hate, will most likely remain his M.O. for making his almighty dollar. Time will tell.

Is THAT why he's been getting progressively grumpier the longer he does the show?? I always thought he was just becoming a curmudgeon.

I hope the treatment center is full of people that he's offended over the years. Maybe he'll learn to stop being a bigoted ass.

@Andy Brady

I agree completely. This guy has made a career out of mocking and insulting people in the same position *he* is in now.

He's an arrogant loudmouth without sympathy for others. He kicks people when they're down, and fellates them when they're riding high.

He's a sociopath. That's his *real* issue. Everything else flows from that.

@yoopie93 So, you have never listened to him have you? He was hot before Howard & he has an entirely different show than Stern. BTW - I am not a fan of Toms show, he is an arrogant asshole & he is to the right of Rush. But it is the most listened to local morning show in the country - not the city of the state but the entire country - and he drove Stern out of the cities twice.

@Bob Alberti Back in the late 80s when his show took #1 he was being paid in excess of $500k a year. Their book has always been exceptional and he has side gigs like live commercials. Yeah, he makes a lot more than a million.

@Bob Alberti He was the first radio guy ever to make over one million

@Jim Creston Poet Generally, men that post comments on City Pages  are useless pussies that wear stocking caps year-round. Especially men that use the phrase "Do tell".

@ne7minder @yoopie93 most listened to "local" morning show in the "country"? in terms of what? you cannot mention tom barnyard's name in the same breath as howard's. howard has been doing radio LONG before barnyard and made radio what it is today. he was way before his time and doing bits that were unheard of. and as much as people knock howard for his on-air persona, his is the straightest guy in his personal life: no addictions, infidelity, etc., like barnyard, limbaugh, et al. and when his honesty and insight shines through his interviews that's when you get radio gold. howard stern, baby!

yoopie93
yoopie93

Oh please--do your homework.  Howard Stern created his show in 1979 and went into syndication in 1982.  The KQ Morning Show was created in 1985.  Every city in America has at least one "morning zoo" show that completely takes all of its cues from the Stern show and copies its bits.  When Howard Stern was syndicated on terrestrial radio, his ratings were the highest in the country, and it wasn't close.  To say that Barnard's show is completely different is completely bogus.  Yes, I listened to the KQ morning show--when I was in junior high.  That's about the right age for his schtick.

yoopie93

No, he was not.  Check your facts.

@vosrayh Not sure about that, a couple of the guys on WCCO back in the day may have come close. The guy that used to work midnight to 6 @ cco, Franklin Hobbs, for sure did but he bought all the ad time at a discount & then sold it himself so its not apples to oranges there.

vosrayh

Not sure if he still does though. But he has studios in both of his houses here and Florida where he does the show from and one DT Minneapolis.

@ne7minder @tastypastry @yoopie93 Stern was on Letterman in 84. Barnard didn't start his show until like 86. I think Barnard pushing Stern out has less to do with Barnard being any good and more to do with the general conservative lameness of the twin cities.

ne7minder
ne7minder

@tastypastry @ne7minder @yoopie93 "local", look it up - non syndicated. Since you know so much about Howie, what year did he finally make it big in radio? Oops, that AFTER Tom. And what they do on KQ is nothing like Howies act, never ha been. Howies wife disagrees with your assessment about his fidelity BTW.

TL;DR - tasty knows zero about Stern & less about Tom and can spew more inaccurate statements than both put together.

MicheleBachmann

@yoopie93 You are such a stupid dumbfuck.  All you need to know about Howard Stern is that he tried to come to the Twin Cities and the KQ morning show kicked the living shit out of him.  It was embarrassing.  If Tommy was a hack, Howard would have won.
