AFSCME is one of the most powerful unions in the state.
One of the most influential unions in Minnesota released an endorsement yesterday for bills moving through the House and Senate to legalize same-sex marriage.

AFSCME Council 5 has more than 43,000 members in dozens of local chapters around the state, including the City of Minneapolis, Department of Human Services, and University of Minnesota Technical.

From the endorsement:

"Everyone should be able to marry the person they love," said Eliot Seide, executive director of AFSCME Council 5. "No one should be singled out and denied the economic protections and cultural privileges associated with matrimony. There is no substitute for marriage - civil unions are separate and unequal."

...

"AFSCME has been on the frontlines of every struggle for human rights, civil rights and worker rights," said Seide. "We were the first union to join the campaign that successfully defeated the hurtful marriage amendment in 2012. Now it's time for loving same-sex couples to have the freedom to marry in the state they call home."

Same-sex marriage bills passed committees in both chambers last month after a full day of testimony at the Capitol, and will go to full floor votes later in the session.
