Judgmental Mpls neighborhood map might offend you, will probably make you laugh [IMAGE]

Minneapolis, judged.
Live in Loring Park? According to the "Judgmental Maps" blog, you're really in the land of "gay renters."

:::: UPDATE :::: Judgmental Mpls map creator speaks out: "The whole thing is satirical"

The latest entry on the blog takes a snarky, possibly offensive look at the City of Lakes, complete with attempting-to-keep-it-real neighborhood names like "Target Corp zombies roaming the skyway" (downtown), "people who can't afford Southwest Minneapolis" (Lake Nokomis area), and "drunk college students" (Dinkytown).

Too bad the map is eligible, I can't read it.  And there's no link to a bigger one.

I don't get the "art snobs" nobody even lives there! it is a school, and not even an arts school! can someone explain this to me?

they got the NIMBY part wrong, the entire city is full of NIMBYs so it should just be stamped across the entire map

How about a hat tip to the redditor who originally posted this?

I don't get the "Renters who can't afford South Minneapolis" area (way at the top). That part of Northeast is all single family homes. And likewise, the "Rich artists who pretend to be poor" area is one of the shittiest neighborhoods in Northeast.

i live in one of these areas that has a crime theme and I know I do... I think it's funny. Those people who thinks it's racist are the LAST ones to live here and the LAST ones to help.

If you have to explain a joke, it isn't funny. And with Minneapolis being one of the most segregated cities in the country, one shouldn't be surprised that readers would find it racially charged.

The real point of this map was to illustrate how absolutely full of shit the entire population of Minneapolis is. Millionaire democrats, crabby baristas, wannabe hipsters, sellout hippies, skinny women pushing strollers in designer jeans...the biggest bunch of shmucks between Seattle and Chicago

Very funny...thank you for the laugh! Some of us actually get it as a joke and the easily offended shouldn't even read city pages lol

Oh my god boo hoo! How could anyone be so racist as to mention the published & factual racial demographics of a given neighborhood in a given city!!! Boo hoo, I say! This is all so racist it is making me cry buckets of tears made of liquified liberal guilt!!! You are all being so racist right now!! You can't mention anyone's race unless they are caucasian!! Nobody mention anybody's race from now on, ok, or you will hurt my feelings!! You can't talk about where non-white people live, THAT'S RACIST!!!

Whoa whoa whoa....everyone needs to calm down here.  This is called Judgemental maps for a reason and is obviously meant as satire.  I have lived all over Mpls and took it as a somewhat funny look at the preconceptions and generalizations most Mpls residents I know have about their city.  Why does it have to go to racism right away?  Some of the areas are funny and some are not and some areas look like they are just filled in with whatever the author felt like putting there. I think Camden is listed as "too scary to investigate" because every Minneapolite I've ever met talks about that area like the Boogeyman lives there and he's going to shoot you in the face the second you come into his neighborhood.  Obviously that's not true.  There are sketchy pockets everywhere - there are parts of south Mpls where I would not walk at night.  One could say that part of this reputation that North Mpls has earned is deserved and part of it is blown out of proportion.  But the same could be said about most other parts of the city.  If anyone actually thinks like this about all of these neighborhoods, I feel sorry for them.  But if you are able to laugh about the ridiculous stereotypes presented, good for you!  Everyone else needs to lighten up!

Look who's glass is half empty. I think his comments are very offensive to those who need to use douchebags. How alienated they must feel hearing degrading comments like that. Thanks Andy for shitting on a whole segment of the female population. Remind me not to hang out with a Debbie-Downer like you.

I also want to add that the prior entries on the same blog have outright racist things on them and there are ZERO comments. Phoenix has "injuns", Chicago has "crime crime black people crime crime", Manhattan has "dreidel dreidel dreidel" and "we still have black people!". Zero comments. This is the ONLY map that does NOT have specific racial labels on the entire blog, yet everyone is getting their panties in a twist.

As an outsider, I find Minnestoans to be extremely defensive and prideful of their home state/town. it's really annoying and one of the many reasons why i can't wait to move out of this state. Ugh.

Read the creator's comment on the site.  It it making fun of other's perceptions, not stating what the person who made it thinks themselves (who is from the areas which are labeled "compton").  It is not re-enforcing a stereotype, it is saying, "PEOPLE THINK THIS ABOUT THIS AREA, AND THEY ARE DUMB"

joe.wright000
joe.wright000

if stereotyping specific populations of a specific city was misinterpreted about 75% of the time then i would guess this specific "author" lives in a specific city were no one cares who he is or what he does but only asks, "why spend the time making a map stereotyping specific populations of a specific city that's misinterpreted about 75% of the time?"

the comments on this article and in reply to the original tumblr post are out of control. Yes, I agree it's a piece of shit, but I find it kind of ironic that the prior entry to this blog is for my home town - Phoenix. ZERO COMMENTS! Minnesotans be uppity!

Oh good, glad to see I'm not the first person to find this totally racist.

This reflects the point of view of cynical, white 20- and 30-somethings who don't get out of their social circles. This sort of stuff makes us dumb. I really can't believe the north Mpls assessment - 'too scary to explore.' You're reinforcing racist stereotypes, which is not very community-minded. I plan on passing this on to some community leaders around the various neighborhoods to show them what the sort of perspective City Pages is encouraging.

Gross. City Pages, you need to work a bit harder to find better bait for web traffic. This map is just plain racist and unfunny, and the author is a coward for "disassociating" herself from her own work instead of just owning the piece of crap. How about this one instead?

Molly Phillips

Hey, City Pages, this isn't nearly clever enough to be worthy of your coverage. Check out the other Judgmental Maps from this same website, and you will discover other racist gems like: Phoenix has a section labeled "INJUNS," and Chicago has a line, above which is labeled "WHITE PEOPLE" and below which is labeled "BLACK PEOPLE," "CRIME," and a bunch of question marks. Pretty rad!

Way to go white people for posting yet another racist, classist piece of shit excuse for entertainment! This is terrible and today I "unlike" city pages forever. Bye bye

@lurker How about that's not where it was "originally" posted?  I know it's hard to understand, but not all content begins with Reddit.  The dude that posted this to reddit just lifted it from somewhere else.

Lol.  You can't downvote this.

@candicorn Minneapolis is one of the most "segregated" cities in the U.S.? How do you come up with that conclusion? Welfare recipients and Section 8 welfare housing are scattered throughout the entire city, not just North Minneapolis and Powderhorn Park. You can find fine Section 8 housing in Cedar/Riverside (Somalia in the Sky), East Bank, West Bank, Seward, Northeast, Nokomis, Southwest (although there is a waiting list), Powderhorn, and even in the North Loop (yes, I know, hard to believe, but there is! All those luxury loft condos that sat vacant after the housing crisis, the owners of those buildings began to accept Section 8 vouchers to get some income out of their investments). It is refreshing to know that my tax dollars are allowing the parasites to live the high life while I work 50 hours a week and consider going to Pizza Hut a "luxury" on a Saturday night. But then, on the other hand, I am a white guy, and therefore I am automatically a slave trader and a racist, so I guess I deserve my misfortune.

@petersieve1 what kind of erasure "we are all equal" bs is this lol.  trying to pretend you have no preconceived notions of anyone anywhere.  Sounds like someone is white!

So making fun of everyone is racist. See ya later, but sadly you'll never stop trolling here even though you say you're gone.

anonymous

uh, no they are not. north minneapolis has by far the greatest concentration of section 8 properties. also every homelss shelter and every  half-way house wants to insert itself in my neighborhood.  also the start tribune , in a regular basis including the recent article on gun ownership,  publishes articles about  crime and poverty way out of proportion. . the map creator says the area has residents that have tried to turn it arond and faild- ever hear of Old Highland? she took a cheap shot, and shes racially biased

jongraef

@keny1 @candicorn Also: apparently these people have never been to Chicago, which is indeed so segregated that a new term was invented to describe said segregation: hyper-segregation.
