Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe and Ravens linebacker Brendaon Ayanbadejo will be honored for their efforts promoting equality in major league sports this week by GLBT ally nonprofit PFLAG National.

Former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue will present both players with the Straight for Equality in Sports Award Thursday at a gala in New York City.

Says Tagliabue in a statement:

For PFLAG to be honoring them is particularly appropriate, because one of a parent's greatest fears when their child is GLBT is that opportunities will be closed to their child. As long as professional team sports -- and youth sports -- are seen as not fully open, it contributes to this fear. Chris and Brendon are having a big impact in changing attitudes and making sports welcoming to all.

Kluwe and Ayanbadejo have become rising stars for their work as straight allies since last summer, when Kluwe wrote his famous "Lustful cockmonster" letter to a Baltimore delegate who tried to silence Ayanbadejo for speaking out in favor of gay marriage. Kluwe went on to play a key role in helping defeat Minnesota's proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. Most recently, the two NFL players authored an Amici Curiae brief to the Supreme Court in the Hollingsworth v. Perry case over the implementation of California's Prop 8.
