A .38 Special made a special delivery right into its owner's finger when it went off while he played with it.
For the second time this month, we have occasion to say the following: If this guy is a model of gun safety, we'd hate to be around the reckless ones.

Just a couple weeks after a firearm safety teacher accidentally fired a gun in a Stillwater school just before teaching class, an NRA-certified instructor from rural Stockman, Minnesota ended up in the hospital after he accidentally shot himself in the hand while he was jacking around with his gun.

According to the Winona Daily News, Fred Petersen, 66, was showing his wife a .38 Special handgun last Thursday morning when she asked him whether the trigger could be pulled while the gun remained holstered.

Petersen made the regrettable choice to try and answer his wife's question with a demonstration.

The Daily News, citing comments from Winona County Sheriff Dave Brands, reports, "Petersen triggered the action while holding the gun and holster in his left hand, accidentally firing a shot." The bullet hit his finger and he needed surgery to repair damage to a bone.

Reached for comment by the Daily News, Petersen said: "The gun was pointed in a safe direction, but my finger was not in a good spot."

That's one way of looking at it.

Oh, for heaven's sake... This is NO accident! The gun functioned exactly as expected. In fact nothing unexpected or unforseeable happened at all. The negligent idiot pulled the trigger of a loaded firearm and got exactly what he was supposed to get.

No sympathy here.

Just goes to show you that accidents will happen sometimes, unless you want to spend your life in a padded room. Freedom ain't free!

FWIW, google "DEA agent Lee Paige" and watch the video. And remember that he's the only one in the room "professional enough" to carry a Glock .40 (except for 50 Cent and Too Short maybe.)

The only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a...wait... Inception.

No respect for what they hold in their hands: "The gun was pointed in a safe direction BUT my finger was not in a good spot" and "for the second time this month a NRA-certified firearm inspector accidentally shoots himself"

" my finger was not in a good spot " wonder what he'd be saying if he had shot his wife in the head?

LOL!  White guys are stupid subhuman animals that need to be exterminated for the good of humanity.  The planet has never needed them and never will.

@brendang1 Yep.  And if he's " needed surgery to repair damage to a bone" then it's probably pretty accurate that his finger just wasn't in a good spot and he grazed it.  If he'd really drilled himself in the finger with a .38 at point blank range then he'd be getting surgery to re-attach his finger.

That's why there is such a heavy emphasis on safety training.  Accidents can and will happen, and the only way to mitigate them is through training and vigilance.
