Kluwe, 31, finds himself out of a job a year after becoming a national sensation thanks to his colorful gay rights advocacy.
:::: UPDATE :::: Vikings throw Chris Kluwe under the bus while confirming his release

It appears Chris Kluwe's memorable 8-year run with the Minnesota Vikings is at an end.

Kluwe took to Twitter this morning to bid adieu to Minnesota in what appears to be confirmation that the Vikings elected to release him in favor of recent 5th Round draft selection Jeff Locke.

Here's Kluwe's tweets: Kluwe recently said he hoped to stay in Minnesota but planned to play in the NFL for at least a few more years either way.

He is not even close to being one of the best punters in the league...you are confusing Blair Walsh with Kluwe obviously...Kluwe's 39.7 yards per punt average was one of his best averages in his 8-year career and it was ranked 17th in the NFL...his pathetic punts inside the 20 were ranked 31st out of 32 punters last year...I love the way he stands up and uses his podium as an NFL player for the good...but he was cut bait with his average performances on the field...and that's what counts, PERIOD.

Read about his possible 'dismissal'...if the reason he is being given the 'so long' is based on him speaking his mind and supporting same sex marriage...then shame on you Vikings!

An articulate man, who has been the best kicker in football, with the courage to speak out against ignorance. too bad the Vikings don't have the courage to keep him.

I hate it when City Pages screen captures a bunch of tweets and labels it as news. What kind of journalism is this? Where are the follow-up questions like:

Where is he going?

What is he going to do next?

Did the Viking's point to his GLBT support statements as reason for letting him go?

Did they let him go?

Did he quit?

Come on Aaron Rupar, make some phone calls.

I assume you're talking about Patterson. If hadnt been picked by the Vikes, he would be torching our secondary with some other team, probably in our division. Greg Jennings will have his work cut out for him with this kid, but with his speed..... I'm sold.

Kluwe is not one of the best punters in the NFL, he is #20 of 30. I agree with his politics, but it's just inaccurate (and unknowledgeable) to assume that because you like his politics he's being cut for having them.

The stats are out there and you didn't find them. He was ranked 17th last year. Perhaps you should make friends with Google.

Based on what stat was he third in anything in the NFL?

He probably would have renegotiated. Punters play into their 40's. You're a boob if you draft a punter in the 5th round after trading away most of your draft to get a guy that might be too stupid to learn an NFL playbook.

I understand the nature of the beast. I also understand that last year Chris Kluwe had his best season statistically and was top 3 in the NFL. The stats are out there. Google is your friend.

Wrong David. He was cut because his play has been in decline these past few seasons and a better option was available allowing them to save money. Nature of the Beast.

You're a boob if you think this move had anything to do with anything but football. He's 31 was going to make over a million dollars.

Allow me. The Vikings cut one of the best punters in the NFL because he is educated and speaks his mind. Nothing wrong with that. Except in the world of the NFL where players are expected to be seen and not heard. And by the way, our new punter will suck.

@southmpls86 We're talking to Kluwe today at 4 in hopes of getting answers to some of those very questions (he was released, so no, he didn't quit). Patience, my friend!
