Alba-Salmeron was left scraped and bruised after a Good Samaritan fought him for allegedly raping a woman.
Raul Calkins was walking home from a party around 3 a.m. Sunday near East Sidney and Mt. Hope Streets in St. Paul when he heard a woman crying out from the side of the road. He looked to see what was going on and saw a woman naked from the waist down and a man running from the scene.

Calkins, 26, gave chase and caught up with the man, later identified as 30-year-old Dario Alba-Salmeron. According to police, he started fighting Alba-Salmeron, then gave chase again after an SUV driven by a woman scooped up Alba-Salmeron and drove off.

Moments later, police responding to a report of a street fight pulled over the SUV with Alba-Salmeron inside. KARE, citing police documents, reports that Alba-Salmeron was bloody, smelled of alcohol, had bruises on his face, and had his belt loosened and zipper down.

Calkins, still giving chase after the fight, came running toward the scene, and once he saw Alba-Salmeron, he yelled, "That's the guy, that's the guy."

Police then doubled back and caught up with the half-naked woman whose cries initially caught Calkins's attention. She was sobbing uncontrollably and told officers she'd been raped by Alba-Salmeron, who she didn't know but recognized from the Mazatlan Bar.

The Pioneer Press, citing police documents, reports that Alba-Salmeron later acknowledged having sex with the 42-year-old woman but said she'd "offered" it. He told officers he believed the woman, who he characterized as a "crack whore," was setting him up for a robbery when they had sex in tall grass by the side of the road.

In response, the investigator pointed out that "it would be odd for a female to participate in a robbery set-up where she allows the defendant to have sex with her for approximately 10 minutes before her accomplices arrive to rob him," the complaint says.

Alba-Salmeron has been charged with a felony criminal sexual conduct charge that could land him in prison for up to 15 years.

Could not be more proud of my little brother Raul...well, should probably just say younger brother. Nice to know that someone from my family stood up for what is right in this world...

Raul is extremely lucky that he has not been charged with crimes. Good deeds rarely go unpunished in the age of overzealous prosecutors and police. I would be too concerned about legal troubles to intervene in a situation like this.

There is also a good chance Raul will have a derogatory mark on his record that will follow him permanently, and negatively affect his chances of employment. When these things pop up in background checks, it's instant disqualification...no interview and chance to explain the circumstances.

Standard procedure. But I agree it's messed up. Better thorough investigation than none at all. RAUL rocks!

Give Raul Calkins a medal. Quite a risk he took to do the right thing.

On behalf of all women, many thanks to Raul. So many would not go to the effort he did to make sure this devil was caught. You are a hero.

This was someone I know who stopped this A hole. The police had the nerve to take him into custody like he committed the crime.

Both you and the PP, from which you copied this info, got the suspect's name wrong. I won't tell you where you can go to find the facts, or how easy it was for me to obtain them, because that's supposedly your job.

@citizen That is what is wrong in the world today, people too worried about stupid people and not thinking about doing what is the right thing to do. For anyone who would have simply ignored this woman's pleas and walked away just remember how much you would want help if something similiar was happening to you.

@4real I'm sure he'll get a public defender and the Liberal judge will give him 2 weeks in jail and a slap on the wrist. That's how we roll in Minnesota.

@Francisco Huerta In a case like this, they take everyone into custody until they can sort out who did what. The cops did nothing wrong here.

@keny1 @4real Speaking of crawling out from under a rock, here's Keny again putting his strange political slant on things that (to normal people) are not political. What would you like to bet that you are not even close with your little guess?  That said, good job Raul! We need more people like you in this world!
