House approves marriage equality; four Republicans vote in favor, two Dems against [UPDATE]

The Sen. Scott Dibble/Rep. Karen Clark marriage equality bill won approval in the House.
This afternoon, the House approved marriage equality by a 75 -59 vote. Sixty-eight votes were needed for passage.

The Senate plans to take up a companion bill on Monday. If it also wins approval in that chamber, it would then be signed into law by Governor Mark Dayton.

In the days leading up to this afternoon's vote, it was unclear whether any Republicans would vote in favor of the bill. Four ended up doing so -- Rep. David FitzSimmons, R-Albertville; Rep. Jenifer Loon, R-Eden Prairie; Rep. Andrea Kieffer, R-Woodbury; and Rep. Pat Garofalo, R-Farmington.

Two DFLers voted against the bill -- Rep. Patti Fritz, D-Faribault, and Rep. Mary Sawatzky, D-Willmar.

According to the Faribault Daily News, Fritz said yesterday she'd "vote with her district," which leans to the right.

The Strib's Jennifer Brooks captured the post-vote reaction among marriage equality supporters in the Capitol: On the other side of the issue, an anti-marriage equality MNGOP Representative from Andover was feeling very different emotions: If the bill is ultimately signed into law by Gov. Dayton, it would make Minnesota the 12th state to legalize gay marriage.

The sad part of this whole thing has nothing to do with marriage. It has to do with the poor woman who has to have oral sex with Rep. Clark. Is her face and hairdo on purpose? I hope her vagina isn't as hideous as her face is. She also needs to see a dentist. Carpet munching apparently isn't good for oral health.

The voters in November were for this. The vote was yes or no to add marriage being only for heterosexual couples and the voters said no. Which was awesome as is this.

The November bill was to change the State's constitution. Different issue entirely. But the GOP didn't win that one either.

I'm confused. I'm not saying I am for or against this bill, but I thought the voters of Minnesota voted against this issue in November. How can the House pass the bill now? What was the point of wasting time and money and getting people worked up by having it on a ballot if they were just going to pass it anyway? Is that just a way for government to make people feel like they actually care what the voters think?

Just wondering, did they keep the Civil Union language? Instead of getting a marriage license everyone would get a Civil Union license.

Weed is the new gay marriage - far more beneficial for the masses

Now on to step 2 where we seize the guns.   Then the final step where all Republicans are forced into gay marriages via Obamacare.   Such fools you Republicans have been to not listen to Glen Beck and Alex Jones.

what is the benefit for heterosexual folks?

@keny1 Keny, I really don't care about biker dykes, and twinks hooking up.

I'm happy this is passing, hopefully they'll shut up now.

Yes I've seen the SF parade videos/pics.. Just be tolerant.

@Amy Caldwell Dillishaw Amy, the vote in Nov was for a Constitutional amendment.

This is a law being passed by your reps.

The first, no way, no how ever.  The second sure go ahead.. but things could change.

@Amy Caldwell Dillishaw you should probably read up on the subject before commenting.  You seem really under-informed.

@MicheleBachmann Personally, I look forward to being forced into a polygamist marriage with a  shetland pony and a pile of brightly colored painted stones.

@digitalprotocol Our homosexual friends and family get to have the same rights under law.  That's the big up side for me.

@digitalprotocol You already have the benefits of marriage so what are you complaining about? But to answer your question, if same sex marriage is legalized, it would be good for businesses in the wedding industry.

@CinBlueland I am sick of other people telling me how I should be tolerant. Am I a bigot because I don't agree with their line of thought? .They call me a bigot because I don't agree with them? It seems to me that these people are the biggest bigots themselves. They rip on us because "we" do not "believe" what "they" think. And according to them, their thought is "righteous and true" Who says? The Anti-American Kenyan Socialist Obama? They can go motherfuck themselves. Here is a hint to all you Anti-American Socialists out there: You are more than welcome to move to China and earn $2/h while working 90 hours a week. But hey, they have socialized health care there. If you don't like the American system of free enterprise, then JUST FUCKING LEAVE. Trust me, your absence will NOT be missed.

@_Joe_ For the record:  That edit was my own. Not a commentary on the original comment.  I actually crafted a scathingly witty response that included all manner of inappropriate content, including an allusion to the frequency in which @Keny1 copulates.

After reading it, I realized that it was wholly inappropriate to civil discourse, and since I couldn't remove it, simply replaced it with a helpful PSA.  And yes, I was under the influence at the time.  Not gonna lie.

Crap!. Look I'm not against.

@_Joe_ @MicheleBachmann  It's all good.. we're just allowing people who love each other to get legal standing.

We just need to expand it a bit to allow for Sharia law. Yes I love both my wives.

@keny1 @CinBlueland  It sounds like you're "bullying", "silencing", and "oppressing" people who disagree with you. Hey, remember when you were that "independent thinker" who could see both sides?

You sure don't sound like a guy who voted for Ellison. Probably because that was just another one of your lies.

You're the delusional wingnut that we all thought you were.

@keny1  You are a bigot a keny.  You've proven that time and time again.  Also you should leave America because liberal progress is the history of America.  Gay marriage will be legal nationwide in 5-10 years because the arguments you bigot idiots come up with don't make sense and aren't allowed under the our system of government.  See in America we have these things called equal protection under the law and freedom of religion which mean that stupid evil bigot religious nuts like you don't get to magically decide that a group of people have less rights than everyone else.  Anyway stupid bigots like you have lost the battle today and now you will be losing the war.  Nobody listens to stupid old white people like you anymore keny.

@MicheleBachmann I love it when Liberals order others to "pay their taxes"....especially from Liberals who don't pay any taxes to begin with.

MicheleBachmann
MicheleBachmann topcommenter

@CinBlueland  Any church in America that takes advantage of our military, freeways, and anything else the taxpayers provide should not be allowed to discriminate against a group of people and then not pay taxes.    Don't like a group of people because of who they choose to love?   That's fine, pay your taxes.   Gay people pay taxes, churches don't.   Personally the feelings of religious bigots don't really matter to me so fuck you and your fake controversy.  If churches don't like being told what to do then pay your taxes.  Churches that oppose gay marriage are nothing but hate groups.  Americans shouldn't have to subsidize a hate group who hide behind religion.    If it was really about religion they would try and outlaw divorce, adultery  and eating shellfish all of which are given equal condemnation time as gay people in the Bible.  The bigots who are opposed to gay marriage never even mention that stuff so its obviously all about their hate for gay people.   Bigots can have all the hateful opinions they want but I shouldn't have to subsidize their hate.  Pay your taxes church and you can hate whoever you want.

_Joe_

@MicheleBachmann It's scary because I'm not sure if you actually believe that, or are just a huge troll.  NOBODY fantasizes about "children getting shot" and every rational person knows that.   You realize that attempting to marginalize me by throwing the most vile insults you can come up with is a very republican tactic, right?

_Joe_
_Joe_

@CinBlueland As long as we apply it equally, I have no problem with that.  Not because it is "Sharia law," but because up until now, we have disallowed two consenting adults to engage in a legal contract on basis of gender.  If you want to open that up to "x" consenting adults, that's fine.  However, we need to consider the ramifications for the people, across the board, regardless of gender or orientation.
