Joe Soucheray blames single moms for flight delays, unplowed streets

Over the weekend, Pioneer Press columnist Joe Soucheray uncorked a baffling column blaming single mothers for flight delays and unplowed streets.

While lazing about for a topic, Soucheray stumbled across a statistic in his own paper that 6 out of 10 women who give birth in their early 20s are single mothers. This set off a light bulb in his brain connected to the sequester.

Thus was born the epic of mansplaining that could only be called: "Single moms are making us broke."

soucherayheadline.JPG
There are many great passages, but this one might be the distillation of the column's strange logic:
Just think of entitlement spending the next time the hypocrites in Washington want to take a snowplow off the road in Yellowstone or take a few flight controllers out of a tower because of this so-called sequestration. Who do they think they are fooling?
Who is being fooled, indeed.

When the Pioneer Press tweeted out the column (with a somewhat less incendiary headline), it provoked a fierce backlash:

The Pioneer Press hasn't printed something this unpopular and trollishly wrongheaded since its fake-out gay marriage editorial, which prompted columnist Chris Kluwe to quit in protest and led to this unprecedented non-apology. Look for a similar pseudo mea culpa from Souch by week's end.

Bottom Line: Welfare Whores= DFL voters.

I guess I don't understand the Liberal thought that "making babies is a right, regardless of economic circumstance".  Can someone explain to me (without attacking me) how you feel that it is acceptable for people to have sex without protection when they are in circumstances in which they can hardly survive on their own, and then have babies that they have no means to support and then expect tax payers to take care of them? Don't you see something wrong here? I want an honest explanation from a Liberal who believes that this is OK in their books. Explain to me how single-motherhood, and the tax dollars that are spent to support them is good for society? It is a proven fact that children from single mother families are prone to drug and alcohol addiction, poverty, crime, and in the case of females, following mamas lead and getting into the same bad situations that mama did. This is what we call Generational Welfare. It is an evil downward spiral that benefits NO ONE.

No One.

Well, Bryan, i did read it, and am including a portion below. There is only a passing mention of male abdication of responsibility, and is heavy on blaming "single women parents". Did you read it? Here's a portion: "Single mothers in their early 20s instantly become the have-nots, statistically, in income and education. For so many women to have so many children without a husband is a complete abdication of personal responsibility, which leads to a complete shunning of any civic responsibility. We are going broke. And if you think taxing higher-income earners more is the answer, you haven't done the math. The men who are party to these births are, of course, just as irresponsible, just as uncommitted to a civic responsibility to take care of their own. So what has happened as a result of this mindblowingly destructive trend? Well, most principally, what has happened since the 1940s is a government that has expanded to require more and more money to feed, clothe, house, educate and medicate the children of mothers who cannot afford to do it themselves because their education has stalled, knocking them off the path of growing their incomes."

Nick Coleman is still alive? Must be in a very quiet room still talking to himself. Go back and read one of Coleman's articles if you want to if you want an example of poor journalism.

If a "woman" feels responsible enough to go out and have unprotected sex with a person that has no legal obligation to her, and then this responsible woman thinks it's a good idea to have a bastard, half-wanted child, then that responsible women should be responsible enough to work her ass-off paying for the choices that she made.

I personally feel that it is unacceptable for so many children to be born bastard; statistically they do worse in school and are more likely to commit crime.  People that think that welfare is a legitimate option are fooling themselves.  I would think that a liberal forum like this would be more receptive to the entire Nurture concept.  Congratulations Citypages on turning this serious issue into anti-woman campaign.

The republican party has become a party of "proud to be stupid" racists and sexist.... they literally have no one else left...

Joe Soucheray is certainly coming to a lot of conclusions from a single statistic. I would be interested in learning what percent of these single women giving birth in their 20s live with the child's father. It's not unheard of these days for women to give birth and then later marry their babies' fathers. Or are some of these single mothers lesbians who cannot get married, but who live with their partners?

Next headline:  Hedonistic 20-something men to blame for the failing US economy... keep it in your pants, future absentee fathers!

This article is an outrage! Front page, Sunday, really?? I'll second Souch is a douche. AND Pioneer Press for allowing such an inflammatory, statisticless bullshit.

When trolls like this have to stretch this far to find a topic, it actually makes me feel pretty good about the state of our country.

What do you expect?  Joe Soucheray is just a stupid old man who has been wrong about politics and the world his entire life.  The only reason he has a job is because his listeners are too stupid to hold him accountable for being wrong year after year.  Like all dumbass Republicans Joe sits around wondering where all this debt comes from.  Obviously it has to be single mothers and liberals because there is no way it has anything to do with George W. Bush fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan while cutting taxes for rich people.    It would be funny except Joe gets a radio station and 3 hours everyday to spout his hateful stupidity.

@keny1 The problem with the article was not about Joe's desire for couples to have children after getting married. The problem is Joe attacking single mothers and not the fathers who impregnate them. It takes two to create a child and we support single mothers because the fathers are often deadbeats. Soucheray and his acolytes pretend to be this "call like it is" bunch, but they have a problem understanding what the facts truly are.

@keny1 It's not the ideal situation but what is the alternative? You want SS troops going through the poor neighborhoods sterilizing people? Mandatory abortions by the state? That what you're going for Keny? Let the kids roam the streets starving and cold like some scene out of Les Miserables'? Truth is, more educational programs would help alleviate the problem but compared to the tax dollars sucked up by the Pentagon, CIA and wars started by GWB, as well as tax-breaks for the wealthy and corporations, the pittance we pay to support the children of single Moms is a tiny drop in the bucket.

@j.reiter Obviously stuck in the 19th century and I hate to tell you this, but women have the right to vote as well. I know it scares you but under the law, men and women are equal and as soon as both a man and woman produce a child out of wedlock, they are legally obligated to each for the next 18 years, marriage or not. Congrats j-reiter for turning this into an ignorance campaign.

@Racheal SweetChile Rassier Most single "moms" are losers who can't keep a husband or even boyfriend because they are miserable and so they like to make everyone else around them miserable.  And they like to create a baby(ies) so they'll have someone to love them.  Then they lose their jobs and become bitter, ugly people who blame everyone else for their bad decisions.  I bet you are single and not a very good parent. Just because you pop out a couple kids, it doesn't make you a mom.

j.reiter

Really? You insult republicans for making broad generalizations, but in getting there you make a broad generalization about republicans...  I'm guessing you stayed home from work today to smoke some weed and troll Citypages.

j.reiter
j.reiter

@cnerlien  You are obviously stuck in the 19th century, only a woman can get pregnant, women are empowered with multiple forms of birth control, the choice of abstinence and abortion.  The choice to get pregnant falls 100% on women.  Are you implying that a man has the right to determine what a women does with her body?  I hope not.

j.reiter
j.reiter

@cnerlien, You completely avoided responding to what I wrote and what does anything I had to say have anything to do with women voting?

Calm down your emotions, just because it isn't the "19th century" doesn't mean you have to crap on pro-family ideas.

@j.reiter Heading off to work in a few minutes - only smoke on weekends - BTW, Republicans are still sexist, racist trolls with no empathy for their fellow man. It's actually a mental disorder. Blame the Pentagon budget, not single Moms for your high taxes. How many more bags of $$$ does Karzai need?

cnerlien
cnerlien

@j.reiter It takes two pal. Here's rudimentary biology. Pregnancy requires an egg and that pesky thing called sperm. Both parents are responsible when they come together. A man has every right to determine what to do with his own body. If he doesn't want a child, then he shouldn't have sex. Period. Same for women. It's not complicated.

j.reiter
j.reiter

@chicago That's how I would expect a crazy person to respond. You have nothing constructive to say about what we are talking about so you completely change the subject from strangers having to be financially responsible for illegitimate babies to George Bush.

chicago

@j.reiter @MNjoe Yeah, seriously! How many trillions of tax dollars were spent on Iraq and Afghanistan? How much will it cost to take care of the tens of thousands of American soldiers maimed for life from those wars? And you rat repubs cry about money going to feed poor kids. You're a bunch of sick fucks and that's all there is to it. Seriously.

cnerlien
cnerlien

@j.reiter You put the responsibility on the woman with no mention of the father involved. You should be saying both mother and father should be working their "asses off" not just the mother.
