"I'm very glad he didn't die," Laura Ness told the Duluth News Tribune.
As she left Whole Foods and walked toward her vehicle around 8:30 Tuesday night, Laura Ness, wife of Duluth mayor Don Ness, heard an argument. Then she heard a gunshot. But instead of running away, she ran toward it.

Lying on the ground was 22-year-old Deandre Norwood, who had just been shot in the head. Ness was the first on the scene. As she dialed 911, the victim's cousin loaded Deandrew into his vehicle and drove him to the hospital. He's already chatting with friends and is expected to survive.

In an interview with the Duluth News Tribune, Ness said she was surprised nobody else rushed to Norwood's aid and said she had a hard time sleeping Tuesday night. She said she was left with a bloody hand after she tripped and fell while running toward Norwood.

Ness said she chatted about the incident with her husband when she got home.

"We have a very tame life," Laura told the News Tribune. "Here I was involved in someone's huge drama and then there's our own quiet life... We talked about opportunities and choices people are left with. I just have empathy for everyone involved."

WDIO spoke with Norwood's sister, who said two men held up her brother for some liquor he was carrying home. The sister said the bullet grazed Norwood's head. No arrests have been made.
