-- Update at bottom --

During a police chase in the Lyn-Lake area this afternoon (see our full story about all the mayhem here), a motorcyclist was struck by a police squad near West 26th Street and Blaisdell Avenue (the exact circumstances aren't immediately clear -- see update below). After the accident, the biker lay dead in the street as officers engaged in a shootout with the suspect they were chasing a few blocks away. The suspect was killed and two officers were injured (both are expected to live).

Another one's down, another one's down, another one bites the dust ... MPD's new cover song.  How many more will be killed from a MPD high-speed chase?  Keep on burying them ... but don't blame the police ...  they were in the wrong place and the right time?  b.s.!

I see people disregard sirens all time (not pull over, go thur green when sirens are coming on cross street etc) but 50mph at the intersection is crazy. And doesn't sound like suspect was very dangerous-certainly not warranting a huge chase through urban, residential streets.

Probably will end up with the police not being wrong AGAIN like it usually does

Take that shit down. Does no one realize how senseless it is to post photos of a dead body? We don't even know his name. He died under horrible circumstances and this is just disrespectful.

I know more facts are necessary to draw conclusions before saying the police are to blame for this civilian death but the early and eyewitness reports say he came lights and sirens through blaisdell and 27th on a red light at 50 mph. Very residential area and Id imagine its tough to see and hear even a code 3 police car traveling that fast around a blind corner with tall buldings over your engine and through a helmet. The lights down here change when and emergency vehicle approaches with its emergency lights on but not in time at that speed. The police are trained to know this. The fatal accident occured after the suspect was subdued(killed) and I cant help but think this guy was hurrying because he was late to the show. Sad things all around. I hope I'm wrong and the officer was acting in the interest of public safety and not being reckless but the early evidence suggests otherwise. Anyway, my sympathies to the family of the deceased and prayers to the injured officers and their families. What a sad event.

Ok Michelle but the cop blew a red light across blaisdell at 50 mph. Investigation necessary.

From the Star Trib article:
"Another witness interviewed by police, Kyndell Harkness, a Star Tribune photojournalist who witnessed the crash as she was on her way to photograph the shooting scene, said she was passed by three police cars with lights flashing and sirens on that went through the red light at Blaisdell, where the motorcyclist had a green light."

It was an accident. The cops weren't being reckless, they weren't drunk, and they didn't intentionally kill the motorcyclist. It's a sad day and in sure the officers involved regret that anyone had to lose their lives

Lol nothing's changed in Minneapolis. Blaming the police 1st w/ the bodies still warm, limited information, and 2 cops in HCMC. Wise up, people

Hey arm chair investigators: if a crime has happened, they can't just move a body. That's like tampering with a crime scene before completing a full investigation. You really think they would leave a dead body in the street just to disturb you?!

I love that the MPLS police dept is trying to cover their ass by saying "at this time we do not know who hit who.... are you kidding me? your cops, a 10 year old can figure out when there is front end damage on the front of the police car and a motorcycle with damage on the side and a dead body in front of the car, the cop hit the motorcycle. plus witnesses saw the whole thing.

on a side note what the hell are 2 cops busting into the house that the suspect is held up in.... isn't it cop 101 co cover the perimeter and try to get the guy out first. Its terrible the the officers were shot, but that's usually why they play it safe and try to get the suspect out or send in a team of police that are trained to get the guy, like a swat team or such.

I dunno. I got home at 4 and it was quiet here. I live at 24th & Blaisdell. Maybe 4:30-4:45 but there was not much going on. Anyway, the suspect was killed around 3, why was the cop speeding after the incident was over?

The motorcycle hit the cop car... Wanna try again?

Until you know the facts regarding how the motorcyclist was killed, please spare us your conjecture. But as Hilarity Clintoon would say, "What difference, at this point, does it make?"

The accident didn't happen around 5, it had happened almost an hour before I left work, so around 4:00

If they'd only used the light rail nobody would have been harmed. Think of all the fossil fuels burned in this chase!

i live on Blaisdell. when i got home at 4, there was no motorcycle accident and my daughter told me 2 cops were shot. this was at 4. why were cops speeding down Blaisdell after the suspect at the cops shooting was dead??? the motorcycle accident occured around 5.... cops need to stop their reckless driving through our residential streets!!!

I normally give cops a bit of slack, but what really pissed me off this time was the shutting down of Chicago so cops could be rushed to the hospital.

WTF who else gets this level of treatment? If I ever need emergency transport I want Excelsior shut down!

I get that cops have a crap job, but they also have body armor. If I wear body armor and a weapon I'm a terrorist, militia, psycho.

Well, guess I'll join the Progressives.. the State will keep me free from harm and provide for me.

If anyone else did this, they'd be looking at hard time. Vehicular homicide. Let's hope this filthy, class-traitor swine gets some quality years with bubba...or is 'held accountable' by the victims family or friends...

Slow down in these small crowded streets you dumb fuckin cops!.... 50 cops already at the scene, what a waste of a life, almost 2 as the woman on the back could have also died.

some reports saying cop ran stop sign

I smell a law suit coming the way of the Minneapolis Police Dept.

I thought police chasing through a dense urban area was the absolute last resort. Now you killed a guy. Those two officers live. Fucked up. Really fucked up.

I was redirected around it, not to say that any loss of innocent life is worth it, but if the suspect was willing to have a shoot out with cops, it's probably likely they were following them for a valid reason.

A sheet and not a paramedic to be soon. Good try, MPD. Oh never mind, must be busy chasing someone over nothing.

@cabbageface Yes it is rude to show that.  But it's a MPD reality ... several times every year.  We just buried the boy from the last chase.

@CinBlueland Criminals don't use public transportation. Oh wait. I forgot about the Route #5 line. Forget that. My bad.

@Matt Becka That's a little too glib and a little too heartless considering two people died and two people were shot today...

@Ditchd50 How so? I'm open to differing opinions.  Stated cops have a shit job.. (They deal with the scum of our society daily)

I'm not allowed to be slightly annoyed that a major ave was shut down to transport them when injured? No not a traffic / convenience issue! Why didn't this happen for the latest shooting victim in N/S mpls?  Are cops better than 12 yr old black girls?

CinBlueland
CinBlueland topcommenter

@Ditchd50 How so? We should all bow down to the boys in blue?

I"m no anarchist nut job, I"m just looking at the shootings in N and S when was the last time a major ave/st shut down to transport the victims?

Just to be clear you believe police have special right.

Or was it the Progressive comment that set you off?

Dakota/Driched? I touched lib and con, with my post.. If you're going to be upset, need a little more than "you know what you did"
