:::: UPDATE :::: Andrew Sandstrom criminal complaint: Apartment was so disgusting, officer gagged

Andrew Sandstrom, the 24-year-old father of six who accidentally left his youngest child in a hot minivan for hours earlier this month, has been charged with second-degree manslaughter and faces up to 20 years in prison.

THE BACKSTORY: Baby dies after being left unattended in minivan for four hours

Five-month-old Christiana Sandstrom was pronounced dead outside a Moorhead apartment complex after spending about four hours in a minivan on the afternoon of June 11 while temperatures hovered around 80 degrees. Andrew unloaded her five siblings from the vehicle but forgot about Christiana.

Sandstrom just turned himself into police yesterday, but he wasn't on the lam. KSTP reports he's "cooperated with investigators and was given time to attend his daughter's burial and funeral services."

Last week, a judge ordered that the five other children Sandstrom has fathered with his wife, 27-year-old Shayna Sandstrom, be placed in foster care. The couple's apartment was found to contain "extreme filth" and be "unsafe for the other children" when police arrived following Christiana's death.

As a mother I can totally see how people have accidentally left their children in the care for extended periods of time.  When you have a baby you're operating on limited sleep, you're juggling home and work, and if a baby is quietly sleeping...there is the chance you may get out of the car without them.  Every summer you hear stories of a parent who thinks they dropped their kid off at daycare only to find out the baby is was in the car the entire time.  I wish people would leave their cell phone, wallet, purse, or something they always carry with them in the back seat next to their baby.  That way when they do go to get out of the car they have a reminder.

Reminds me of the movie Idiocracy.  Idiots having 6 kids while smarter people having what they can afford/manage.

How do u forget the one kid that physically requires you to take them out of the car? My 5 month old daughter in her car seat is over 45lbs and i know he's a big fat ass but anyone would notice their lacking a heavy awkward carrier with a baby in it! Fucking Christ he better pay for this and so should his sorry ass wife raising kids in a shit hole...... I PRAY, WISH wtf ever i need to do that they NEVER EVER EVER get their kids back and those kids get good outcomes from foster care. Foster care seems better then that shit hole house and parents.

Wonder how it is that this gentleman was singled out for charges of manslaughter. Seems up until now, that I've heard, no charges have ever been placed on anyone.

24 years old and six kids. Obviously not a fit parent. Lives in extreme filth. And this, friends, is why we need to be teaching birth control and providing it for free. You have no idea how often I've encountered 19 year olds who have no understanding about how easy it is to get pregnant. No idea. This creates a cycle of poverty for the next generation.

As much as I think he is individually liable for what he did, we as a society are also responsible for having a system that doesn't teach people basic facts of life, parenting skills, ect.

Manslaughter? Really? How about murder in first degree, it was premeditated, he knew exactly what he was doing! 20 yrs? Baby could have had 80!

Well obviously, but it's still a good article. It changed my opinion of these kind of cases pretty drastically.

24 yrs old n 6 kids.... its actually OK if he's responsible. But the fact shows that he's not. The fact shows that having many kids is not easy...

@garysoberg your sympathy for a dead child is commendable. are you by any chance one of those people who talk about their love of god? or just a non fake christian teabagger?

@dave872 It makes perfect sense. Andrew unloaded the deceased child's ('her') five siblings from the van. What part doesn't make sense?

@mitchell39  doesn't surprise me, a lot of  "pro-life" people don't give a rats' ass about living kids or dead ones, as long as they were born first.

@Allison Gumm Lester Huh? Do you mean, on anyone who has done something similar? Of course they have, many times.

@andreas.nettmayer  Fake christians insist on abstinence only sex ed, unless their kid gets knocked up, then they only insist that your kids have abstinence only sex ed.

@andreas.nettmayer There's no excuse for anyone leaving a five month old in car. He was responsable for her well  being and he failed her. Still can't under stand he was wiping his eye's so much never seen a one tear or crying as did anyone eles while I was there for all the time's he would hoover in front of the casket especially when he would see someone coming in from the other room just mad me sick.

@Angi Stevens We really need to make sure we make the default for idiots who screw to just be idiots who screw, not idiots who become parents. Please channel that anger towards getting the message of reproductive health out there, in the schools.

@mitchell39 I gotta admit, I don't like that his other kid's picture is posted here.  Fine for the guy, but not his baby (who is probably 3-4 now...this pic was taken in 2009).

andreas.nettmayer

@mitchell39 Presumably his religious beliefs prevent him from being responsible. Pretty sure Jesus doesn't want half a dozen kids raised in squallier.

@Jenjavitis @mitchell39 His other kid's picture isn't "posted" here, it's posted on Facebook. This is a link to a page that's published on the open Web.
