Michael Karkoc was a Nazi commander before moving to Minneapolis in 1949, remarrying (his previous wife died in 1948), and having four more kids.
You expect to find hipsters, artists, students, and all sorts of interesting folks up in Northeast... but Nazis?

According to a fascinating report by the Associated Press, there's been at least one of them up in that part of town since 1949 -- Michael Karkoc, a 94-year-old Ukraine native who worked "as an officer and founding member of the SS-led Ukrainian Self Defense Legion and later as an officer in the SS Galician Division," the AP, citing wartime records, writes.

As the report details, records indicate Karkoc's unit was at the scene of civilian massacres, including the brutal 1944 Warsaw Uprising, though the exact role he played in them is unclear.

In any case, while trying to emigrate to the United States in 1949, Karkoc falsely told American authorities he wasn't a part of the military during the war and "worked for father until 1944. Worked in labor camp from 1944 until 1945," records state. His status as a former Nazi commander would have prevented him from coming to America had it been known at the time.

In a curious twist, Karkoc outed himself as a former Nazi in a Ukrainian-language memoir published in 1995. Though Karkoc's memoir is available at the U.S. Library of Congress, the AP was actually tipped off about his Nazi past by a retired British clinical pharmacologist who moonlights as a Nazi hunter.

The AP sent reporters to Karkoc's Northeast home in an attempt to interview him. But Karkoc, still walking without a cane or walker, simply said, "I don't think I can explain," and wouldn't comment further.

Thomas Will, a prosecutor with the special German office that investigates Nazi war crimes, said Karkoc, even at his advanced age, might still be prosecuted for war crimes.

Can all you hate filled self righteous jackasses give it a rest ? The war has been over for a while now. This man was in his twenties and trying to do right by his fellow countrymen. Nobody is complaining about Von braun or any of the other hundreds of scientists that came here after the war and helped to increase our standard of living. If you want to hate just for the sake of hating hate the S.F. 49ers. They are probably the lowest form of human life on earth today.

According to his neighbors, he is a nice guy, takes care of his property, and is an asset to the community. I guess I would rather live next to him than the ghetto thugs who have currently raped Northeast and contribute nothing to society other than crime and welfare babies. At least I don't have to worry about getting hit by a stray bullet by walking by his house. And even if he is guilty of the crimes he is accused of committing, by the time he would be extradited and tried in a criminal court overseas, he would probably die of a heart attack anyway. Bottom line: Just let Karma (or God, if you believe in him) play its course. This is yet another non-story trumped up by the Liberal media.

The AP investigation with the help of European Nazi hunting organizations only recently uncovered evidence of his involvement. I'm with the other poster who said if Bin Laden had been found 50 years later, we'd care. The holocaust is not as fresh in our minds as it was for older generations. He's not been tormented by this his whole life, he's been living a good life, thanking his lucky stars he got away with genocide for decades.

He would be prosecuted by German or Polish authorities and be deported by the U.S. if requested.

Nobody was FORCED into the bloody SS they were an elite corps where you had to TRY hard to get in, kinda like being a navy seal...  Only a scumbag.

Let's do some math:  The guy has been a productive citizen of the US for 64 years.   He had a job, paid taxes, raised a family, commited no crimes.  I'm sure the guy has a valid drivers license, SS#, and auto insurance.

WWII ended in 1945 - the oldest this guy could have been was 26 years old.  A 26 yr old, ain't no General or Commander.  When you're caught between two warring countries (Russia & Germany) what's a guy supposed to do?  Say 'no thanks' and get shot?  Besides how would they ever convict this guy?   Any whitnesses?

And you want to deport him for lying to the immigration service?

How about the 10 - 20 million illegal Mexicans who never even registered with the immigration service.  Those who pay no tax, drive without insurance, drive without a license, breed indescriminately.  Why don't we deport them?

I say hand him over to Germany and let that country deal with him. He lied to get into the US therefore deserves a one way ticket to Germany. For those who thinks to just let it go, why not tell that to those who lived to tell about their awful experiences as prisoners in Nazi concentration camps?

Onan
Onan

Lie on your immigration papers and get deported. This is about the only thing the US can do with him. War crimes may be prosecuted by the countries in which he allegedly committed them.

agree with Shawn. How long he's going to live anyway. He'a sooo old. Let God punish him for what he's done

What does his age have to do with it. Why does his age get him a pass. Those babies tortured and killed should have had a chance!

Shawn Kuiper

He wrote about his crimes in 1995 18 yrs ago while I agree he should have been punished it should have happened long ago the sheer cost of a trial now would not be worth it at 94 many of these folks were given 2 choices serve or die I truly don't condone his actions at all he should have been published but going backwards 70 yrs is not moving on and learning from the mistakes of our past -- I just don't see it at 94yrs old why did they not take action in 1995 when he wrote a book on it??

Kathie Carlson
Kathie Carlson

I understand what he did was wrong some of my ancestors were in there I've been to the museum I've learned about a things that my ancestors have written however this man is 94 years old. just leave him alone he's carried this with him all his life Northeast Minneapolis has no one he's been there forever who in the hell are they trying to kid. I don't know why they brought this up now.

Allen O'Leary

He hasn't been tormented by what he's done. Like many Nazis, they didn't do what that did because it was wrong or because they were forced to. They did what they did because they thought it was for the greater good...killing people for the greater good. He deserves no clemency for his actions. There is no statute for murder in this country. He should be treated no differently.

Charles Awad

Yeah, 63 years of freedom after escaping to America is punishment enough... WUT.

He's probably brought here by the US government and protected.

Shawn Kuiper

At this point honestly he has probably tormented himself more then any trial or prosecution could, he had been living here 63 yrs that is a lifetime for many people the fact that this had hit the media will probably kill him anyway at 94yrs old -- let him die and let his maker decide if his past is worth the punishment

@kennyX Sort of amazing that you wingnut douchebags bother to hunt down the 1% of the media that qualifies as "liberal" and, then, complain that liberals are too intellectual for your tastes. Stick with Faux News. They are aimed at exactly your comprehension level.

mohanlon3
mohanlon3

@kennyX non issue to you maybe,. I'm going to guess you don't belong to any of the groups that were targeted and slaughtered by the Nazi's.  If you are, yer a dumbass.   The fact that you feel he is not as big an issue as gangbangers currently in that hood, what the hell does that have to do with anything.  In your skewed world Ganbanger=s worse than Nazi,. who fucking cares?  Now we all know you are a racist and would probably AGREE with a lot of the views that prompted this man to join the largest known systematic genocide of innocents in human history.  You sir, are an asshole with really poor common sense and logic.  To translate your post, "I'm a racist dumbass who has no grasp of the scope of human history and I would rather see some blacks get busted than some harmless old Commander of systematic genocide..."  Well that's just ducky...

yoopie93

@East_Coast_Doug I don't care if he's the most saintly human being who ever walked the earth--and I'm willing to bet he's not even close.  He was a fucking Nazi for chrissake!  This isn't difficult.  He took part in a genocide.  He likely was part of a unit that particularly killed women and children.  And you think we should show him mercy because he paid his fucking taxes?!  Go to hell, scumbag.  And take this Nazi piece of shit with you.  You deserve each other.

Truth_Teller_1

Lets hand over all the illegal Mexicans to Mexico - and let that country deal with them.  How about a one way ticket to Mexico?  For those who think to just let it go, why not tell that to all the tax payers who have to pay for their children's education, health care, etc.

I'll tell you what - let's send them all back - Mexicans and Nazi's

@Eva Chavarria Hunter So you think it's right to torment and harass a 94 year old man for something he did almost 70 years ago? Move on.

kennyX
kennyX

@mohanlon3 Keep on drinking the Kool Aid, Sparky. And you have ABSOLUTE PROOF that he was the commander of genocide?

kennyX
kennyX

@yoopie93 And you know that he played a part in this as fact? Because the Liberal media tells you this, it is automatically fact? He was from the Ukraine. Go and do a Google on how young men from the Ukraine were forced into joining the Nazi party, whether they liked it or not. (Either join, be drafted, or imprisoned). I love how you pansy-assed Liberals like you give your EXPERTISE on war when you would piss your pants if you ever had to join the Military. I'm not defending the Nazi party, but why don't you fucking educate yourself before you spout your mouth off.

Erica
Erica

@ajlalk3 Tell that to the survivors of the Nazi concentration camp. I doubt that they would like to be told to "move on".

mohanlon3
mohanlon3

@kennyX @mohanlon3 Okay then, but likely proof won't apply, he'll be deported for lying on his immigration forms and they won't pursue extradition because no charges have been brought yet in Europe.   Likely proof won't be needed other than that he was in the Nazi army/party.  Oh well.  That part isn't conjecture since he admitted it in writing, also admitted to lying to get into the US, so it's up to a judge.  Oh, and you're still a racist dumbass...

kennyX
kennyX

@mohanlon3 Well until you get that proof, shut your fucking mouth and quit conjecturing up things.

mohanlon3
mohanlon3

@kennyX @mohanlon3 I don't need absolute proof, just like you don't when you make dumbass sweeping generalizations about whole groups of people you have never met, See it's your whole mode, but you have an issue when others follow your methodology, funny how that is..  Again, he doesn't have rights, he admitted to lying to get in to our country, done...  Apples and ornages to compare this guy to some field worker in SoCal.  Unless of course your a dumbass racist.

mohanlon3
mohanlon3

@kennyX @mohanlon3 Nope, waiting on that proof, and I'm totally happy to take witnesses statements as proof.  Even if they are no longer living.  Ya see, he isn't an American citizen, never has been.  That;s the point.  He is only due the rights given in Ukraine and Germany, not here as he ain't a citizen he has been barred by law from entering this country since about 46...

yoopie93
yoopie93

@kennyX @yoopie93 Um, really, troll?  I think I'll take the word of the AP reporters who didn't just randomly pick an old man to name as a Nazi, but spent weeks or more thoroughly researching and interviewing before publishing their story.  And leave it to a conservative blowhard like yourself to come out and be the one calling everyone he disagrees with a "pansy-ass liberal"--all in defense of a Nazi.  Wow.  Go troll on some site where the readers might give a shit about your opinions, asshole.

mohanlon3
mohanlon3

@kennyX @yoopie93 He had the choice of being imprisoned or killed and didn't take them...   ='s NAZI... SS for fuck sake,. not just run of the mill NAZI but SS... getta clue...  He did what he is accused of and probably did so willingly.  Also one doesn't rise in the ranks to Commander without following orders with a will, so your argument is just so much horse shit...  And I'm from a military family so save your liberal baiting for the actual liberals.  I'm all for finding out the rel facts on this man.  If there is no issue, let him be, if there is clear record of atrocity, fucking hang him...

yoopie93
yoopie93

@ajlalk3 @Erica No.  I don't care how old he is.  He committed atrocities against human beings as part of a genocide that killed 6 million people.  Do you honestly believe that time makes that any less horrific?  Fuck you.  If they need someone to help tie the noose, give me a call.

ajlalk3
ajlalk3 topcommenter

@Erica @ajlalk3 What will punishing this old, fragile man do for them? Will it bring back the years they lost? Or the friends and loved ones who were killed? No. I didn't think American's were so bloodthirsty for revenge that we want to string up a senior citizen who can barely wipe his own ass, for things he was ordered to do 7 decades ago.
