Tajreed Rich
Tajreed Rich, a 41-year-old hall monitor, member of the football coaching staff, and student counselor at Robbinsdale Cooper High School, faces a third-degree sexual assault charge after he was busted having sex with a 17-year-old student last Friday.

According to the charging document, the victim's father unexpectedly came home around 3 p.m. that day, heard noises emanating from his daughter's bedroom, and headed upstairs to check it out.

He found her bedroom door ajar. Inside, his daughter was naked on her bed and Rich was standing over her, also naked. They had just finished having sex.

The victim's father recognized Rich as a Robbinsdale Cooper employee. Indeed, as WCCO, citing the complaint, writes, "The victim was a student at Cooper High School and was seeing Rich for counseling about previous relationships with male students."

During conversations with police, both the victim and Rich acknowledged having sex with each other twice, with the first occurrence taking place last month at Rich's Minneapolis home on the 2700 block of Knox Avenue North and the second happening last Friday in the Robbinsdale home.

Rich told officers he knew the girl was a "vulnerable student" and said he "knew better than to have a sexual relationship with a student."

As news of Rich's arrest circulated yesterday (he was charged today), Robbinsdale Cooper officials released this statement:
This is a horrible incident, and the district finds acts such as this reprehensible. The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority, and our hearts go out to the family during this time. Robbinsdale Area Schools and Cooper High School are working closely with police on this matter, and we will continue to support Cooper students and families during this time.
The Star Tribune, citing a school district spokesperson, reports that decisions about Rich's employment will involve a bargaining group that represents educational assistants. (UPDATE -- Robbinsdale Schools announced this afternoon that Rich is no longer employed by the district.)

If convicted, Rich faces up to 15 years in prison.

She was 17, nobody blinked an eye on here when a state senator got freaky with a 17 yo boy. Confused, it's OK if it's gay, but it's straight its disgusting?

I've known the Rich family for years. They are a mainstay on the Northside and respect throughout the city for their accomplishments and community involvement. But this is a complete shock. I'm not defending Taj for his actions, but if they had sex twice, once at his place and once at hers, I don't think that is considered "rape" but two consenting adults having sex, the problem is the student/teacher line was crossed. I wonder what is going to happen to his brother who also works in the school district? Will he lose his job because of his brothers actions?

WHAT is wrong with people? Kids aren't even safe in school anymore.... Sadly, it's very likely that this wasn't the first time he's assaulted a student...just the first time he got caught!

Not defending this guy - but isn't 17 the age of consent in MN? Or is it a crime because of his position (no pun intended) of authority over her?

No, he was busted RAPING her. When will City Pages use the correct terms for rape crimes?

@CinBlueland The difference is quite clear I should think.  In the example you cite, the two people involved were perfect strangers.  In this example, the older man was in a position of authority over the younger girl.  He worked at her high school.  But nice try anyway.

@josh019 Age of consent in Minnesota is 16. But he was in a position of authority.

@Fowlsj @kennyX @mrdave And those 18yo teens you watch doing porn are magically different two months later than a 17yo at graduation?

Please defend how a 17 yo having consensual / legal sex is more offensive than an 18 yo being fisted for your amusement?

@gtstangrider@kennyX@mrdaveAgain, you people need to figure out what you're offended about.

Dem Rep. Kerry Gauthier, 56, admitted to having a liaison with a 17-year-old boy at a rest stop.

That was perfectly fine with the CP crowd since it was a gay hookup.

I just knew this would come up again.  Check yourselves, it's ok for a young boy to blow an old man because we are tolerant, but a young girl having sex with an older man is disgusting??

@kennyX @mrdave Dude, he`s 41. She`s 17. Do the math. I`m astonished that a dad found his 17 year old daughter with a 41 year old sack of crap and didn`t do anything. He called the cops, what a cowardly weakling, I would have called an ambulance, maybe, a couple of hours later.

@kennyX @mrdave  Doesn't matter if she consented to it or not she is a child, and he was supposed to be some sort of 'Counselor'. She came to him and had issues with other young men and he took advantage of her. Plain and simple. The Law says a minor can consent to relations with someone no more than 48 Months older than them, not someone old enough to be their father. An ADULT realizes that its not ok to have sex with a child, whether they 'consent' to it or not. Maturity plays a role in good decision making.. Which is why he is in the wrong, and going to jail for years to come.. He knew it was wrong, he ADMITTED she was a vulnerable, and what he did was wrong, so he obviously knew what he was doing!! Should be an open and shut case for the Judge/Jury. Hopefully he gets the maximum penalty under the basis that he worked in a School setting! Kids should be safe at School, period. Would it be ok if that was your daughter, Kenny??? https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/?id=609.345

@mrdave The whole "Position of Authority" clause in that law is stupid and inane. If a woman (or man) who is of consensual age, and chooses to have sex with someone older than them, what fucking difference does it make if they CHOOSE to have sex with a teacher, custodian, neighbor, etc. It would be one thing if this guy was a teacher at the school and offered her better grades if she put out, but he was a fucking custodian! How is a custodian in a "position of authority" over her? What if she had a part time job at Target, for example, and decided to shack up with the custodian old enough to be her father who worked there? Would he be facing 15 years? This is bullshit, and unless it is proven that he raped her or if she has some mental issues where she was not in sound mind to make a decision to have sex with him, these charges should be dropped. OK, fine, it was probably not the best decision to get involved with a 17 y/o and then get caught fucking her in her own home (and dad catching them), but if she was a willing participant, these charges are bogus.
