The Great Minnesota Get-Together already offers sensory overload, from the dozens of rides to the seemingly endless supply of food items on a stick. But as if it weren't enough, for 2013, the State Fair will add 28 new exhibits and attractions.

Always felt that an 80-foot-long equine digestive tract was missing from your fairground experience? This year, find it in EquiMania!, an interactive horse education center. On the less science-y end of the spectrum, Arts A'Fair will celebrate the state's theater and dance offerings through a series of fair-wide pop-ups, which will range from performances by In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre to the Zorongo Flamenco Dance School.

Researching and booking new attractions is full-time work. It occupies between 10 and 15 State Fair employees every year.

"The year-round staff constantly get asked, 'What do you do the rest of the year when the fair's not happening,'" writes State Fair spokesperson Brienna Schuette in an email. "The planning and coordinating of new attractions and exhibits is a big part."

For 2012, the fair actually added 30 new attractions, which means this year is down two. And don't worry: The number in that "attractions" category doesn't include new foods and shop vendors.

The new lineup also features the "Luminarium Exxopolis," billed as a "walk-through sculpture of winding paths," and a Krazy Maze -- like a corn maze, but with music and lights. On the midway, the State Fair is adding a flying ride by the name of "Air Raid" and the roller coaster "Riptide" for thrill-seekers, plus a kiddie coaster and the "Big Bamboo Fun House" to relax.

Can't wait to try them out? The fair kicks off August 22. Until then, here are some pictures of the new additions.
