:::: UPDATE :::: Gluek's bouncer says MPD officers taunted William Davis after he was assaulted outside bar

William Davis, producer of the Morning Grind radio show on AM950, was out celebrating his 30th birthday in downtown Minneapolis Saturday night when he was jumped by two men in a parking lot near Gluek's.

Davis says he was sitting on a concrete half-wall at the intersection of 6th Street and 1st Avenue with his girlfriend and two other friends around 1:30 Sunday morning when the men approached. Out of nowhere, a man he described as black, about 5'9", cornrowed, and wearing a blue checkered shirt punched him in the throat and threw him to the ground, cracking his head on the pavement. The men started stomping him, then robbed him of his cell phone and wallet. (Davis described the other suspect as also black, "bigger and wearing a black tshirt.")

After his head cleared and he was helped to his feet by his friends, Davis's girlfriend went after the two suspects, who were still in the parking lot. Davis says she received a punch to the face for her effort and fell, skinning her knees (post-assault photos of Davis's head and his girlfriend's knee are at the top of this post).

Moments after his girlfriend was punched, Davis saw two MPD officers sitting in an SUV squad along 1st Avenue. With the suspects still lingering on the other end of the parking lot, Davis approached the cop to report what had just happened.

"I'm guessing [the cops] didn't see what happened, but I walked over, told them I got the shit kicked out of me and robbed, my girlfriend was punched, and the cop literally looks me in the eye and says, 'Well, that's what you get for partying downtown.' And he drives away," Davis said. "I'm like, 'What the fuck?' I was bleeding down my head when I approached them and I was slightly angry, but I think I can be excused for that, especially when [the cops] were within eyeshot of the whole thing."

Shaken up literally and figuratively, Davis and his girlfriend retreated to their hotel room at Westin. Once they arrived, they decided to call the MPD and file a police report. They made the call around 3 a.m. and waited in the lobby for an officer to arrive, but Davis says they still hadn't heard back by 4:30 and simply decided to go to bed.

Later that day, Davis says he saw a cop on patrol near his Stevens Square-area apartment and finally filed a report about what happened earlier that morning.

Davis, understandably, is upset about the MPD's alleged unhelpfulness, and especially with the officer's "That's what you get" blowoff.

"I basically live in downtown Minneapolis, so I'm not some guy from the suburbs," he said. "I'm at Gluek's having a birthday party with my family."

For better or worse, Davis said he doesn't plan to pursue the matter beyond the report he already filed. He says he suffered a concussion during the assault and can't remember the badge number of the officer who blew him off, though he described him as "a larger black guy with a shaved head."

"I'm not going to file a complaint against the officer. I don't want to have a target on my back," Davis said. "You know how these cops are, they stick up for each other until the end."

Rather than focus on the fact that he was attacked by two black thugs he is fixating on whether or not the police did their job properly. Typical liberal response.

People get robbed all the time in Steven's square and that's the line the cops will give you. How about do your jobs? The area is just getting more and more gentrified and sooner or ladder they are going to have to start addressing the crime. I've seen Rybak all over uptown, linden hills ect. and I have not once seen him at any neighborhood event in this area.

I'm not a big fan of Mpls cops. I've lived in the city for 13 years and on the occasions that I have had to interact with them (ex. report a hit and run on my vehicle), they have been mostly unhelpful and seemingly lazy. Also, not very pleasant.

Who can feel safe downtown when this is what we can expect from the MPD -sad and disturbing!

The same thing happened to me last year in front of Auggies, and I wasn't even in that nasty stink hole, Bouncer beat me up for no reason in front of the place, pepper sprayed me in my eye causing permanent damage, police just sat and watched, I went up to numerous police officers and was told" sorry that's not my problem" people in my group even tried calling 911 but out of 17 cell phones no one could actually get through to some one for help, which I see as a serious problem, if you end up suing the MPD for negligence, let me know ill happily sign on. MPD is a bunch of sissy loosers.

So this is Janeé Harteau's MPD 2.0??

To everyone blaming the victim for the police reaction, google post concussion syndrome ... this is something the police should know about.

To everyone blaming the victim for the crime, I hope you or your family never has to be in a similar situation with people blaming you for the evil deeds of others.

shouldn't be too hard to figure out the squad on duty.  that area has cameras everywhere.  Should be some video evidence of him approaching the police.   Anyway...shame.

I don't have a gun. But I'd be a menace with my stun gun, which delivers 4.5 million volts of show-stopping electricity to the goons beating up my man. Even discharging that thing independent of a target makes a shocking impact. C&C isn't JUST about guns. I do think, Trevor. Please watch your judge-y tone :) And be sure to have an excellent day.

This is why we allow Coppers to carry guns. They are the ones were are supposed to rely on to stop criminals. If this cop had been doing his job instead of inhaling donuts, these criminals would have been caught, jailed, prosecuted and paid retro-bution. this occurred out in the open on the street. The Police are a failure for all but the rich and Bankster [and Mortgage companies]

Reprimand, no, they should be fired, immediately and so should their boss.

No surprise in this article. I don't know who beats up more people downtown, the cops or the G's.

Sorry to hear what happened. You should have told the Copper your name was Pohlad, or from the Ziggy Wilf Family, the coppers would have brought in the National Guard and NSA. Isn't it fun. We pay their Salaries and the salary of their boss the Mayor yet they only give protection to those who spend a life time avoiding paying taxes. Ultimately the responsibility is with the Mayor and City Council. There is no Civilian Review, no one to represent the over taxed average Minneapolis citizen.

Based on the time and location of the parked squad it wouldn't be hard to figure out who the officers were.

This is unfortunately typical of the Minneapolis police in downtown. I was a manager at two downtown hotels for several years, and the police honestly do not care. It would take hours for them to respond or not show up at all.

Minnesota Martial Arts Academy in Brooklyn Center, Highly recommend it, world class Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and self defense programs. After several years in any of these disciplines you have a much better chance of not getting your ass kicked. I've been doing them for over 12 yrs.... :)  And yes, some are MPD.. and you can punch & choke them as much as you like :)

Oh how the MPD have outdone themselves yet again - standing by while a group of innocent people out to have a good time are attacked - and then blaming the victim...classic. Just what do all those Metro Transit police parked by the Light Rail even do?

Yupp I'm just another gun toting racist redneck! Let me have since you all know me. I work in the public sector and you guys shouldn't be surprised the cops don't care. It's up to YOU to defend yourselves. Call me whatever you want but I know you would never say it to my face. You don't know me so please fuck right off

With everything that's happend  w/ shootings downtown latey I've feared to go down town mpls. I thought maybe the cops would protect me and I would be ok? I now know that is not the case. Very sad story!

Fight? This wasn't a fight. This was an innocent citizen that was attacked, assaulted and robbed while the Powers That Be stood by and consciously chose to do NOTHING about it.

and  Mr. Davis should not let it go. thats why the MPs is like that, no one follows through. you should not be afraid of retaliation from officers. the whole team is not like that, there are great cops out there, and someone will listen.

this has and will continue to happen downtown, we should not be afraid..

Someone should contact Gluek's and other area businesses to see if any surveillance camera's captured the squad number.  During a time when top MPD and city officials are desperately trying to change the image of lawless thuggery in the downtown area, this is unacceptable.  Someone needs to answer to this.

Perhaps re-enacting the police residency requirement would help stem the contempt many MPD officers have for the city residents they serve.

The point of the carry law is not that you will use it one day. It's that in carry and conceal states braking an entering and similar crime rates are lower. Move to Chicago they don't allow any gun carrying. They never have shootings.

@afunnyguy I'm well aware of that, good luck getting them to share the footage.  The author of this article should submit a formal information request to the city and get this ball rolling.
