Altman will play his last game July 4.
Kyle Altman will have only one more opportunity to hear his name belted out in song by Minnesota soccer fans.

The Minnesota United FC defender and former team captain is leaving to attend medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio this fall. Altman was accepted to the program more than three years ago, but he's been putting it off every year to continue playing soccer.

"It's a decision I've been making pretty much every off season for the past three years," he says. "I've taken three years of deferrals, and pretty much I've run out of time. So the decision was kind of forced on me, whether I had to retire and go back to school or keep playing soccer and never go to med school."

Altman, 27, originally signed with the Minnesota Thunder in 2008, then with the Stars (later rebranded as Minnesota United) in 2010. He signed a three-month contract at the beginning of this season with the intention of going to med school.

Altman is a favorite among the Dark Clouds, the team's most diehard fans. They even wrote a song about him:

To the tune of: Don't You Want Me by Human League

You were going to be a doctor in a hospital
When I met you
I picked you out, I shook you up, and turned you around
Turned you into someone new
Now five years later on you've got the world at your feet
Success has not been easy for you
But don't forget it's me who stands by your side
And always has your back now too

Kyle, Kyle Altman
You know I can believe it when I hear that you're our captain
Kyle, Kyle Altman
You know I do believe you when you lead the team to vict'ry
It not too late to score
With header or your feet
You'd better better do it now so we can both be happy
Captain Kyle Altman
Kyle Altman oh-oh-oh-oh
Kyle Altman baby
Kyle Altman oh-oh-oh-oh

Altman's last game will be July 4th at NSC Stadium in Blaine.

"It's been a great journey for our die hard fans," he says. "I know a lot of them in person. And I can't begin to show my gratitude and appreciation for all they've done for this club."
