Minneapolis police shoot, kill deer that wandered downtown

On Sunday, Minneapolis police shot and killed a yearling deer that had somehow wandered into a vacant, grassy lot enclosed by a 7-foot-high fence at 8th Street and Portland Avenue South.

It wasn't easy. According to the Star Tribune, the poor thing was shot four times over a 45-minute period.

Minneapolis police spokesperson Cyndi Barrington told the Strib that given the urban setting, officers felt compelled to space out their shots.

"You just can't start using a rifle in city limits and pow pow pow. You have to be careful on city surroundings," she said.

Officers initially considered tranquilizing the deer, but couldn't obtain a tranquilizer gun quickly. Amid concern the deer might somehow jump into traffic, the decision was made to take it out.

Sadly, the injured deer tried desperately to run away after being shot the first time. A witness said the deer "jumped up and started running around" after the first shot was fired. Later, it started slamming the Sexton Lofts building's glass windows and sliding doors, leaving a bloody trail behind, the Strib reports.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Do we not have Animal Control? It was too hard to get a tranquilizer gun?

Instead, let's kill it and take 45 minutes to do so.

No, no sympathy for the MPD on this one. I'm no PETA guy, but if it was over by the Sexton Building, it certainly wasn't like it was on Hennepin. Though, given that area, the driver's around there routinely almost hit bikers and pedestrians in their late model Dodge minivans, so the deer probably would've been killed one way or the other.

Joke aside, I don't think this was handled the right way.

Sorry, ya gotta take 'em out when they're in urban settings. They're not an endangered species. I'd rather the police shoot it than it get hit by a car. At least this way no cars were damaged.

"...wandered into a vacant, grassy lot enclosed by a 7-foot-high fence..."  Fuckin' cops should've waited for the tranq gun to get there.  Could also have a few tranq guns in some of the squads so one would always be closeby.

Good thing they were there to protect the population from Bambi.

It seems to me that most of you have no practical knowledge of guns. First off they probably didn't have a hunting rifle, a 9mm pistol is going to have a hard time killing a deer in one shot. Also once you shoot it once the deer is going to start flailing about and you wouldn't want to miss and risk a bullet ricocheting and hitting a person. You all also seem to forget that people could have been killed by accidents the deer could have caused by running into traffic.

I find it funny that comments on how police handle an incident are always criticized by someone who has probably never been in a similar situation and gets all of their information on how police operate from TV shows. The reality is that no agencies use tranquilizer guns because trying to figure out a correct dose of tranquilizer is very difficult and if you use to much you kill the animal anyway. Killing a deer in the woods is a lot different than trying to kill one in downtown Minneapolis where the officers have to take into account all of the occupied buildings that surround them and the large group of people standing around watching them. People don't realize that dozens of deer are killed every day across the state from car accidents and similar situations. The DNR would have to have thousands of workers to respond to all these incidents. Get out from behind your computer and TV and gain some real perspective.

And why are more people concerned about an animal that has a life span of about 3 years than about all the other problems the current government is creating! These are wild animals; they don't act like the cartoon characters you all seem to think they act like. Again, your perspective on how a deer acts is based on a TV character. Duh!

Why in the ever-loving F does there never seem to be a tranquilizer gun around when cops encounter wild animals? Jesus, you'd think they'd be pretty standard.

They probably should have used a shotgun instead.

"Cyndi Barrington told the Strib that given the urban setting, officers felt compelled to space out their shots."

Why do they need more than one shot?

Too bad it had to be killed at all.

they could of tranquilized it and brought it somewhere else

My favorite part is that the officers believed that 4 shots over 45 minutes would be less scary to neighbors than 2-4 shots at ounce. Shooting the deer, in-and-of-itself, I don't really have an issue with, but they did a poor job executing that decision.

i'm surprised they didn't put the deer's dental impressions on their forearm so they could claim self-defense.

What the fuck? I didn't know it was against the law for animals to be in the city... and punishable by a slow death.

Todd Zallaps

You've got police that sit idly by as a man gets beaten a couple weeks ago, and now they can't even dispatch a deer with one shot? It sounds to me like we have some serious training issues going on with our local law enforcement...

Where was animal control? Why would you need to kill this animal instead of guiding it back to safer conditions? It's a baby deer for christ's sake. MPD blows.

An animal not "endangered" doesn't mean it needs to be killed because they are considered expendable by some asshole

Jessi Brennan

There's millions of people in this country....should we just go around shooting them because of it? Had nothing to do with endangered species...there's no reason to torture any living creature for doing nothing wrong. Hunt during hunting season. That's cool with me. But making any animal suffer for 45 minutes because of human incompetence is cruel...and unusual.

so they couldn't find a tranquilizer gun within the 45 that it took them to kill it..?

dont you have anything better to do than follow a deer for 45 minutes until you kill it?

Ganzobean HornedHeart

Good lawd. Calm down people. Based on these comments you'd think deer are an endangered animal. "After the young (fawns) are born each spring, there are between 900,000 and 1,000,000 deer in Minnesota" - DNR. So I think we'll be alright without this one.

Why does it seem like the mpd have done soo many effed up things in the past couple months (not that they dont effed up things everyday but..) seems like our new police cheif has been making excuses for alot of incidents lately

Time to return to the range or take up hunting! Not one officer had an AR in their squad or does MPD not have them???? No way this should have taken as long as it did...

That's sick. What a pathetic excuse. I think people would prefer hearing gunshots to finding out some idiot cops tortured an innocent animal. Disgusting.

Also, aren't low-IQ thugs shooting at wildlife in downtown obviously not qualified to carry guns? We don't have tranq darts any more?

That's some pretty piss poor shooting.  This cop should be taken off the streets until he learns how to handle a firearm.

@kyl3wyld Absolutely agree that the deer needed to be put down.  I think a 9mm is more than enough to take down a yearling in one shot, but barring that - this is Minnesota.  Start knocking on doors and you'll have yourself a rifle before you reach the end of the block.

qwer

@Lori Carlson Because they are very difficult to use. Determining correct dosage in the field is incredibly difficult even for an experienced person. It would be a huge waste of money, time and manpower to try to implement that in order to save the very rare large animal wondering into busy parts of a city. Hundreds of deer die every week from car crashes and the like, as do other large mammals. It's bound to happen, they just aren't visible and easy to scapegoat as "someone acted wrongly."

@MNjoe @Onan  - Did you read the part about it "wandering into" that "fenced in area"?

If it can wander in, chances are it can wander out.
