Seeking attention, Ashleigh Casey allegedly smothered daughter 4 years after killing son

In the spring of 2009, Ashleigh Casey's newborn son Alexander was admitted to an emergency room with mysterious symptoms. Doctors didn't see anything wrong with him, and he was released, only to be found dead in Casey's St. Louis Park home later that same day. She claimed he had simply stopped breathing, and Alexander's cause of death was officially determined to be "sudden infant death syndrome."

But this spring, Casey's newborn daughter, also suffering from mysterious symptoms, was admitted to the University of Minnesota Amplatz Children's Hospital. In the middle of the night on May 17, Casey, 25, alerted a nurse that she wasn't breathing. Thankfully, the nurse was able to revive her, but suspicions aroused by that incident led to Casey being charged with murder in connection with Alexander's death.

The Star Tribune backgrounds the mysterious circumstances of Alexander's 2009 death and why Casey's being charged in connection with it more than three years later:
Charges say St. Louis Park police suspected something was wrong when Casey didn't seem distraught and checked her text messages while paramedics tried in vain to revive Alexander after he stopped breathing on March 12, 2009. It wasn't the first time it had happened, she told investigators at the time. He'd been hospitalized for bowel surgery less than a week earlier, and earlier on the day he died she had taken him to the hospital because he had been crying all day.

Casey told investigators she returned home with Alexander that evening and laid him on the bed next to her while she watched TV. She reported her show ended at 9 p.m., which is when she noticed he was no longer breathing, and that she attempted CPR before calling for help. She said Alexander had stopped breathing a couple of weeks before. Casey's grandmother, a registered nurse, told police that on March 3 she resuscitated the baby boy, while police and paramedics were called. Charges say Alexander's medical records show doctors found nothing medically wrong with him that would have caused him to quit breathing.

The case was closed when a Hennepin County Medical Examiner could not determine why the baby had died, but it was reopened last May after Casey brought her daughter to the Children's Hospital, where she was undergoing testing. Charges say Casey called a nurse to the room and said that her daughter wasn't breathing. A nurse performed CPR and revived her. The baby was sitting up and smiling as she was wheeled to the Intensive Care Unit for monitoring. A suspicious doctor contacted child protection, who then notified St. Louis Park police.
As KARE 11 reports, in hindsight, it appears clear that Casey suffers from a textbook case of Munchausen by Proxy Syndrome:
A child protection investigator interviewed Casey in Mille Lacs County [following the incident in May of this year] and during the interview, Casey asked numerous questions about Munchausen by Proxy Syndrome. Casey told the investigator she had something like a dream where she put her hand over her daughter's mouth, but maybe it wasn't a dream, the investigator said.

Munchausen by Proxy Syndrome is a mental illness where a caregiver either exaggerates a child's symptoms or causes medical problems for a child in order to gain attention for the caregiver.
Casey told investigators that when she put a blanket over Alexander's mouth on the night of his death, she fully expected him to start breathing again, as he had when she had done the same thing in the past. Asked why she was in the habit of smothering her children in the first place, Casey said she "wanted them to get more attention from the doctors she had been bringing them to," the complaint says.

Casey was charged with second-degree murder in connection with Alexander's death and two counts of assault for smothering her daughter. Her daughter's welfare is currently being overseen by Mille Lacs County child protection services.

My friend is an accident attorney in Dallas and always hears about these things before anyone else. It makes me lose hope in humanity to hear things like this.

Mental issues my ass!  She had kids to kill them....proven with the first murder!  She doesn't need a hospital she needs to be sent to death row!  She killed her son and almost her daughter so enough about her rights....what about theirs!

I don't care what "illness" she pretends to be having. Give this monster the death penalty.

From my understanding munchausen by proxy patients do not ask if they have this mental illness. If she actually had MBP she would be in denial. This is someone who is looking for a way to make what she did ok in her own mind where she doesn't have to feel like it is her fault - "I have this mental illness and I couldn't help it".

I think taking a closer like at the type of people she surrounded her self with may shed some light on why she did what she did. It appears that she is an attention seeker and I know lots of people who use medical issues to get that attention.

This woman should never be allowed to have children again - She is accused of killing one child and attempting to kill a second. I hate the thought of tax payers having to pay for this woman for the rest of her life but really I think we will one way or another - welfare or mental institution. If she insists on claiming mental illness - commit her for the rest of her life, make her work within the institution to earn her stay.  If she chooses to plea bargain which in today's society will probably be the case - she should NEVER be able to have children or receive welfare - food stamps, medical assistance, cash assistance, free cell phones, NOTHING.

People who FAKE medical/mental illnesses drain society and hurt those who truly do have an illness or disease.

I'm kind of sickened by some of these comments... All you are seeing from this post is half picture... You don't really know this girl... But I do... Her little sister is one of by best friends... And I've known Ashleigh for a good chunk of my life, and she has always battled with depression and hasn't had the easiest life, and she didn't actually smother her baby... She was stuck in the room with this guy for hours. When that sort of pressure is put on you, you say things to try and help yourself. And she is in a psych ward, on suicide watch, they put her baby in foster care instead of giving it to her family. This girl is been through enough, the last thing she needs is people pushing to kill her? Maybe you should step back and reevaluate your hate, and put yourself in her and her family shoes. Honestly truth. This state loves to press charges on people who don't deserve it, and I have heard hundreds, and I mean hundreds of stories of people who have went to jail who didn't deserve it. You don't realize the judicial problems in this state until you see it first hand.

"she asked multiple questions about munchausen by proxy" from my experiences, when someone has MBP, and is told that they do, they deny deny deny because in their mind that havent done anything wrong. for someone to ask "does someone with MBO do this, that, etc." sounds like a set-up for defense to me, just like when Jodi Arias had to learn the symptoms of PTSD to act like she had it. people like this really hurt the general publics mind on people who are good people but have these problems

Munchausen by Proxy is a terrible yet bonefide mental illness. This mother needs mental health treatment not smart a**ed, vile comments. Perhaps if our healthcare system functioned better this disorder along with others like Postpartum Depression could be diagnosed and treated appropriately

@NewsHound101 You kill a kid, and try to smother another? You get the death penalty. "reevaluate your hate"? You're right. I hate murderers.

Seriously.  How long before you're raving in the streets with a machete shouting "LELELELELELELELELELELELEEELELEELEE"?

@Ryan Aspen Stupidity is one of the main reasons people support the death penalty.  What kind of stupid heartless bastard are you to want to kill someone with obvious mental health issues.  You must be a terrible person to see death and only want more death.  It's sad the kid died but obviously this woman has serious mental health issues.  How is killing her going to help anything?

kpss0722
kpss0722

And yet somehow she only received four years for this! I'm not sure if she's mentally ill or not. What I do know is that she has moved on with her life like nothing happened to her babies. I know this first hand. She also has a new boyfriend and goes out partying and getting tattoos. If she is mentally ill, whatever, get her treatment. At the same time, tie her tubes and keep her behind bars. Four years is no where near enough time for what she did to those children. Is that all their lives are worth? She makes me sick! Those who want to take up for this girl, ask yourself this.... How do you think Kallie (her daughter) will feel one day when she learns not only did her mother try to kill her, but she succeeded in killing her brother?

She should never see the light of day again!

@MicheleBachmann go sit and fickin spin! I am so sick to death of you fickin liberals! How about you start looking at the facts and realize that these people are a waste of skin and air. You want to "fix" them use your own damn $$$ and time. Mean time here in the real world we level headed people will carry on and fight for the right to rid our world of friggin idiots like this and you. We have more compassion then you will ever have, our compassion is for all the victims of sick fucks like this

@j.alarson You are a stupid rage filled fool who feels the need to kill so you can feel better about yourself.  If you were truly nonviolent and really cared about the victims you'd be outraged at the lack of mental health services.  You'd get off your ass and actually do something to improve the world.  Instead you are just a mean bloodthirsty savage who can only think about killing more people when you see a tragedy like this.  Dumb lazy freaks like you make the world a worst place.

@j.alarson@MicheleBachmann"least non violent" is right.  For fuck's sake, you're advocating for the death of another human being.

@MicheleBachmann I am an idiot and filled with rage because I am not a liberal and believe in the death penalty? Hmmmmmm weird. I am one of the least non violent, loving people you will ever come across, I just don't happen to believe in government wasting my $$$ on people who "claim" to have a mental illness. Do you have any idea how many people claim to have a mental illness to get out of punishment, or how hard it is to really diagnose a mental illness, or how costly it is at that? And most important MicheleBachmann is that the best you could come up with? Really, lets try owning our words, thoughts, and actions!!!!! Oh wait you must be one of those that like to point the finger at others and blame everyone else.

@j.alarson What an evil rage filled idiot you are.  Killing this woman does what?   Punishes her for daring to have mental illness issues?  We don't need to kill a mentally ill person so you can feel better about what a horrible life you have.   It's creepy how bloodthirsty you are.  What a miserable mean stupid doofus you must be.
