Dubay: Global warming is a "left-wing conspiracy."
:::: UPDATE :::: Jeff Dubay quits Twitter, threatens to fight trolls who "took addiction cheap shots"

On the 1500 ESPN radio show he co-hosts with Judd Zulgad, Jeff Dubay today outed himself as a global warming denier.

Dubay and Zulgad were discussing the weather forecast with KSTP meteorologist Patrick Hammer when Hammer noted the contrast between the weather during the 2009 State Fair -- temps were in the 60s or 70s every day that year, Hammer claimed -- and the scorching conditions folks have had to endure this year.

Zulgad then posed this fateful question to the meteorologist -- "Do we attribute this to something, by the way? Is this the global warming... polar bears are dying sort of thing?"

In response, Hammer jokingly asked whether they had "four hours so we can get into this," but Dubay quickly interjected that "it doesn't take four hours to tell me that global warming is a myth."

"It's a myth, it's a conspiracy, it's a left-wing conspiracy," Dubay continued. "It's not real."

Then, without irony, he added, "It's been disproven by science, alright?" (For background about just how absurd this claim is, check out this post on Rep. Glenn Gruenhagen's climate-change denial.)

If you'd like to hear the audio for yourself, click here and listen to the final minutes of the second hour of the August 30 show.

Dubay took a lot of heat on Twitter for his comments. Here's some of the blow-by-blow: And of course, some couldn't resist the temptation to hit Dubay below the belt by bringing up his struggles with crack: -- Follow Aaron Rupar on Twitter at @atrupar. Global warming is not about opinion. It's about SCIENTIFIC FACT. Plenty of room for opposing views, but not ignorance, half-truths and made-up science to support them.

Here's another fact Jeff seems to be denying... FACT: Jeff will take crap for the rest of his life for a very public battle with addictions, and the asshole behaviors that he exhibited while in the throws of addiction, and he must either grow a thick skin and stop pretending it did not happen or quit the business. To make this work, Mr Dubay will have to grow the fuck up and get over it. It is the price of both celebrity and addiction. Looks like he is not ready for this..fair enough.

Going after Dubay's drug-plagued past in this case is cheap and unnecessary.

On the other hand, to use Dubay's statements as an explanation for why his wife decided to cheat on him with his brother; totally acceptable and called for, almost required; by the stupidity and assholishness of Dubay's remarks.

Seeing on CNN coming up in the next half hour of so, news on Fukushima. Kent Erickson, maybe you "could care less" more about global warming/ climate change, since your carelessness isn't really that urgent...or does go along with being a "troll"?

I am sure whichever side can be more politically or economically profitable will be proven. I tend to believe we need to love this planet rather than trash it.....but it doesn't appear its entirely black and white.

Chaz, bullshit. I've been reading from dozens of sources that Fukushima is leaking. Mainstream, alternative and obscure sources. It IS happening.

Thanks for feeding the troll...I was just bored at work so I decided to make up some stuff about Global Warming. Quite frankly I could care less one way or the other.

Actually, if a scientist could disprove Global Warming, they would be entitled to make A LOT more money. That's how the field works. Science is a constant testing to either learn more or reinforce what we know, and it's the radical changes and breakthroughs that wield the big bucks.

Obviously, something is going on. The Sun is stronger, more frequent and stronger tonadoes, (some with sharks ;-)) huricanes, and drought, melting polar ice caps, on and on. Whether humans are contributing to the change can be debated until we're out of breath, but doesn't make sense to use green energy if we have the tool box to create it?

Dumbass jock comments on science.  Wow, there's a story, next I guess we should ask some football coaches what the best way to handle the unemployment problem is?  Really... Dubay has never been smart, his denying of global warming is a kind of expertise, he's an expert at being an idiot...

While global temperatures may be slightly increasing, I don't think we need to worry about it until winters disappear in Minnesota. Which probably won't happen in the next 1 billion years. Does that mean that we should not do anything about it? No. But should we wet our panties and scream "Armageddon!!"? No. If you want to help the environment, stop driving your gas-guzzling SUV's just to drive 1 mile to the supermarket. Walk your fat ass to the supermarket to buy your frozen pizzas and take the bus or train to work. Even though public transportation is not available in the area which I live, I walk or bike to work (a 1 mile trek....even in the winter).

Jeff Dbag knows more than a college educated weather person who is respected by his peers? I wonder what Jeffs education was to get the job he has. Besides Hubbard KSTP has been a tool for the republican tea party train wreck since the Clinton administration when they hooked up with drughead Rush Limpballs. Bad publicity is better than no publicity. Just look at Ann Coulter,Hannity and Orielly. Miley,Lohan and Ect.

Global warming deniers make no sense. Let's not try to make the world a healthier and less polluted place. Let's create more smog, because it doesn't cause health problems or anything. And what's with the right's "drill baby drill" mentality? Whether or not it happens in our lifetime, fossil fuels will run out eventually, so why not try to create alternate fuel methods?

The same people that say global warming is going on now are the same people that said California would have fell into the ocean by now.

Yes, because when a scientist says that "Miami will be underwater in 50 years because of melting ice in Greenland".. what they are really saying is, "Buy land in Nebraska, it's far away from everything!". Deny climate change all you want, but ti's here and it's changing the landscape more rapidly than in the past.

When he sticks to sports, I like him. He should keep his whacked-out political views to himself. Maybe he's gunning for a sports show on FOX.  Gotta give him respect for beating a crack addiction - a lot of people never make it back.

The whole reason Jeff Dubay has a job on the radio is that he is a brash idiot who will take an opinion on anything and defend it to the death whether he has any idea what he's talking about or not.  That's his entire deal, and he does it better than most people.  That's why he was able to return to the air after his well-publicized personal meltdown.  Most of us wouldn't have gotten a public job back after what he did.  But he is so good at being a sports loudmouth, he has huge value.

I confess, I find him entertaining.  And I am not the least bit surprised to find that he is an insistent argumentative ignoramus who is entitled to be respected for an uninformed opinion about Science, too.

All these scientists you know are paid to say what they say about global warming right. It's like doctors when it comes to investigating workers comp claims, the doctor of the employee and his/her counsel will say that their injuries are very serious while the doctor representing the company will say its a minor injury. I would take what these scientists say about global warming with a huge grain of salt... they are on the take and are being paid to say what they are by people profiting off the idea of global warming.

Only dipshits think that they are entitled to an opinion when it comes to science.  But in the end, it will persevere because science is immutable.  Sticking your head in the frac sand and pretending it's not real doesn't make it go away.

So does much of the country. Consensus among scientists is not "science" unless the scientific method is followed, which in this case it is not. I'd love to see duplicate results from duplicate experiments. I'd like proof as to the questions "why" and "how" it happens. I'd also like to know why the earth was hotter before man. If man made global warming is real, I'd have to think it has everything to do with HAARP, not your average guy or gal. People are asking the wrong questions or none at all. WAKE UP

Stephen Biondo

All these fools who think that it is all a "hoax" need to look at the whole picture. Nuclear plants melting down; Fukushima is currently leaking tons of radioactive water daily into the Pacific. Not to mention the waste from all of the plants around the world. Fracking all over the country, polluting the ground water, causing earthquakes. Coal mining destroying mountain tops. Tar Sands in Alberta devestating hundreds of thousands of acres. On and on. This guy is a moron.

@Chaz Kangas The dingbat deniers have no logical case unless they can prove that CO2 doesn't cause 80% of radiative forcing. They know they can't so they BS around with distractions and anecdotes. CO2 is not "just a trace gas" in the context of how it modulates other greenhouse gases like water vapor. CO2 is a non-condensing gas that remains in the atmosphere a long time, unlike water vapor in constant flux.

A good article on this topic was written by Andrew Lacis in 2010 and can be found on the NASA website. Look up: "CO2: The Thermostat that Controls Earth's Temperature"

ASevins
ASevins

@Jeff Skinner The Sun has actually been getting slightly less hot for the past few decades and has no bearing on this situation. If it were the fault of the Sun, we'd see fluctuations timed with the Earth's varying elliptical distance from the Sun. The Sun argument is just a tiresome distraction from the CO2 evidence; a variation of "blame the butler" no matter what the baron is doing.

I think the best collection of denier-debunking is still the SkepticalScience site. Just about any point the deniers bring up is covered there in various levels of depth. Deniers answer it by making ad-hominen attacks about its founder, who was a cartoonist (as if other website creators have no hand in graphics). But the site merely condenses IPCC statements for the perusal of laymen and doesn't create any information that hasn't been peer-reviewed.

ASevins
ASevins

@kennyX Using Minnesota winters as a benchmark is a ridiculously provincial, dumbed-down assessment of the situation. Nothing's going on in the rest of the world?

Good for you for reducing driving. Just be more consistent in your logic. Look up the meaning of "global" as a start.

ASevins
ASevins

@Andy Allgood With fossil fuels, it's not a matter of "running out," it's a matter of peaking production (see the bell curve graphs). It happened in the U.S. in 1970, and it's happening globally now, albeit less abruptly, which keeps Peak Oil deniers from facing the inevitable.

RE the "drill, baby, drill" mentality: Despite a relative resurgence of U.S. tight oil in shale formations, the flow rates of today's diminishing oil will never match the heyday of liquid crude flow rates. That's why prices remain high and erratic.

Economist Jeff Rubin has written some good analysis of how oil geology set off this recession and is preventing a true recovery. The economy can't grow without historically cheap oil, and perpetual growth has never been sustainable anyhow.

ASevins
ASevins

@Kent Erickson Name some of those "same people." Are you joking?

People who actually think California should have slid into the ocean by now are certainly not geologists or anyone who's bothered to study plate tectonics! They are people like you who make ridiculously simple-minded comments. Megadittos, Rush!

swmnguy

@Kent Erickson OK, I'll take the bait.  Who is profiting off the idea of global warming?

As opposed, of course, to those who are profiting off the causes of global warming and have the wherewithal to pay people to stall and obfuscate and pretend there is an argument, so they can milk the last few dollars out of soon-to-be-obsolete technologies like coal and petroleum.  We all know who they are, and we can understand why they are so desperate to wring out the last few nickels.

But you believe somehow that the coal and oil energy industries are being outspent by...somebody?  Elaborate, please.
