E-cigs banned at Target Field

Chewing tobacco, anyone?
You can't smoke real cigarettes at Target Field -- in fact, you can't even leave the stadium to puff on one during the game. (Weed, on the other hand? At least one guy has gotten away with it!)

PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Hennepin County bans e-cigs

So it probably shouldn't come as a surprise to hear that team officials have also officially banned e-cigs from the premises.

Kevin Smith, the Twins' senior director of communications, told WCCO that "Because of the proliferation of [vaping], we want to make it crystal clear that Target Field is a non-smoking venue of any kind." To that end, the Twins PA announcer's pre-game announcements now contain a line about e-cigs not being allowed at the stadium.

Of course, e-cig advocates argue that Smith and the Twins could still have their "non-smoking venue of any kind" policy while allowing e-cigs, since e-cig users exhale water vapor, not smoke.

In any event, the news reaffirms that the only buzz folks at Target Field can get is whatever they can manage from the fumes wafting over from the Hennepin County garbage burner (and, of course, from $8 beers).

I really appreciate the sarcasm in this article.
Evn though it's not news, it's good to see people's reactions.
@ButcherBaker  you suck staying informed. Does change scare you?

For all the moral supporters.. what kind of claims were you making in the 80s and 90s... I don't see it.

This has been in place for a while now, and it's the right thing to do. Nicotine gum is not banned from the stadium, so quit your bitching.

E-cigarettes are the wine coolers of the smoking world.

You’re exactly right Chris! It’s the society of the “Bloomberg Do-Gooder Over-Achievers” ..!! I personally think that those types of peoples energy’s would be better served if they put that same kind of effort into walking across the street right behind the Target Center to lend a hand at Mary Jo Copeland’s Sharing and Caring Hands, or maybe they could help do some volunteer work at Children’s Hospital with some of the cancer patients, or even make a donation to the Minnesota Food Shelf’s, or possibly help out Meals on Wheels!!! My point is. There are many other issues within our society that need our attention over and above something as trivial as banning e-cigs…..

As with bars and restaurants, the owners should decide what policy best serves their business.

That it was bound to happen, as it will everywhere...for little or no good reason.

I guess even more people won't go to Twins games now, that's not out of the ordinary. Unfortunately this sucks, but at least the sarcasm of the writer is good!

I think they should be banned based on sheer ridiculousness.

A study just released by Professor Igor Burstyn, Drexel University School of Public Health, confirms that chemicals in electronic cigarettes pose no health concern for users or bystanders. This is the first definitive study of e-cigarette chemistry, and finds that there are no health concerns based on generally accepted exposure limits. By reviewing over 9,000 observations about the chemistry of the vapor and the liquid in e-cigarettes, Dr. Burstyn was able to determine that the levels of contaminants e-cigarette users are exposed to are insignificant, far below levels that would pose any health risk. Additionally, there is no health risk to bystanders. Proposals to ban e-cigarettes in places where smoking is banned have been based on concern there is a potential risk to bystanders, but the study shows there is no concern. The study did caution that e-cigarette users are inhaling substantial quantities of the main chemicals in e-cigarette liquid (propylene glycol and glycerin). While these chemicals are not considered dangerous and the levels are far below occupational exposure limits, Dr. Burstyn did suggest ongoing monitoring to confirm that there is no risk. The chemical contaminants are of even less concern. While there have been many claims that formaldehyde, acrolein, nitrosamines, metals, and ethylene glycol found in e-cigarette vapor poses a health hazard, the study concluded that all of these have been found only at trivial levels that pose no health concern. The study did not address the effects of nicotine because e-cigarette users are consuming it intentionally. Nicotine, when it does not involve smoking, is very low risk and has not been clearly shown to cause any disease. However, like caffeine and other common indulgences, it may cause some tiny risk of heart attack and stroke, and so e-cigarettes, along with other tobacco and nicotine products, are probably not risk-free. If there is any risk from nicotine, however, it is so low that it is similar to everyday hazards like drinking coffee or eating dessert, and is far less than the risk from smoking. The study is available at http://publichealth.drexel.edu/SiteData/docs/ms08/f90349264250e603/ms08.pdf.

Gettin sick of everywhere bannin e-cigs, I could understand maybe if they were still at the dome but for christ sake its in an open air stadium and u really cant even smell them that much outside. . I think everyone should b able to smoke at target field they should have a section of seats just for smokers.

Chris L Nerlien

Unless they intend to frisk everyone and confiscate them, they will never stop all e-cig users. They can be hidden smoked relatively easily. Perhaps they should sell single use e-cigs for $8 like they do with 12 oz bottles of beer?

Wow! We really have become a nation of morons. A bunch of victims of everything that offends so we must ban everything, except smoking weed and gay marriage. This is totally symptomatic of the "ME" society we live in. This is just asinine! Minneapolis is one of the top ten cities on the road to bankruptcy like Detroit, but this is the kind of crap our lawmakers waste their time and our tax dollars on. Nero is fiddling. Can't you smell the smoke people?

I'm glad they FINALLY published something on this! Just because your outside doesn't mean smoking of any type is acceptable.

Banning actual cigarettes I can understand, not just because of the 2nd hand smoke but also the potential fire hazard.

Del and Christine, I don't think there has been adequate long term study to state either way.

Kirsten, how many people do you know purposefully blow the vapor in to the faces of others?

Kirsten Zache

Nah. But I will miss seeing people suck on them flashing a weird blue light around as the walk pretending that it's totally normal and blow vapors where ever then in people's faces...because hell...it doesn't hurt anyone so why not.

I was at a game this past weekend and an usher confirmed that hash oil e-cigs are permitted in section 420.

Christine Brown
Christine Brown

no. there actually are not. funny to tell people to do research, as if that just negates your responsibility to do the same. find me the study and the results showing second hand effects of the nicotine released from an e-cig into the air. i'm extremely interested since all my searching has yielded only 'we don't know but are diligently searching for a reason to hate e-cigs.'

Christine Brown
Christine Brown

um, it's not nicotine particles in the air that makes smoking dangerous; it's the hundreds of chemicals used. nicotine is the reason smokers subject themselves to all the toxins. nicotine vapor on its own is not the health problem. this argument is like saying that someone with an asthma inhaler needs to go elsewhere, as that vapor is basically a steroid and steroids are bad for you.

Jen Crowder
Jen Crowder

Yeah, all that water vapor must have been pretty hard on you.

Jen Crowder

Ridiculous. Someone needs smokers to keep buying tobacco with the new tax??

mcculloughellen
mcculloughellen

Absolutely ridiculous! We don't need the gov't or any agency dictating or trying to dictate behavior modification. If that's the case then no one who is overweight should be allowed to go to a Twins game or even be seen in public, they should be shamed into behavior modification, just like smokers. Before every game every person should have to get onto a scale and if they're overweight they shouldn't be allowed in. Everyone needs to get off their ridiculously healthy holier than thou attitude. If that's the case then we need to be afir and only allow healthy options. All unhealthy food and alcohol sold at the stadium should also be banned as well, if it's truly health were concerned about!

@Andrew Steave THAT'S NOT THE POINT, GENIUS.

@Chris Wussler already happened, this is not new, and there's plenty of good reason not to allow it.

@KboneToo bad it's not smoking! OMG.. What if someone were using a portable nebulizer.. Oh the horror.. water vapor!! with trace chemicals!!.. You're breathing far worse walking through the parking ramps and on the street.

@Derek Kosky on purpose or not, it happens, and i won't go to restaurants and bars that will allow it. i'm glad Target Field is being proactive.

@CinBlueland @Kbone nope, not smoking, but not something i should have to sit next to at Target Field. i don't care if it's water vapor, i don't want to see it, there's enough crap in the air already.

@ButcherBaker Pro would mean forward, like progressive.
Banning something that has been PROVEN safer for all involved is actually REGRESSIVE.

You have your terms mixed up. ;)

I don't want to sit next to asshats like you at Target Field, yet you are not banned. Why should water vapor be?
