One man was killed and another injured following a shooting this morning at Champions Sports Bar and Grill on the 100 block of West Lake Street.

Details are scant at this point, but according to a Fox 9 report, the shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. Later, the MPD released a statement providing a bit more information.

From the MPD:
Shortly before 12:30 this morning Minneapolis Police officers in the Fifth Precinct responded to a report of a shooting inside of a bar in the 100 block of Lake Street West.

Officers were on scene very shortly after the call and found a 51 year-old male with a life-threatening gunshot wound inside the bar. He was taken to HCMC by EMS and passed away this morning at approximately 7:30. Officers later located a second victim at HCMC with a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

No one is in-custody in connection with this incident and Minneapolis Police Department Homicide Unit investigators are assigned to the case. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the MPD's TIPS Line at 612-692-TIPS (8477).

The identity of the deceased and the exact cause of death will be released by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office
:::: UPDATE ::::

In a statement, Champions pins some of the blame on the Minneapolis Police Department for creating the conditions in which a shooting could happen inside the bar (for more context, read this post from last winter detailing rising tensions between Champions and the MPD).

Here's the statement:
For many years Champions Saloon & Eatery ("Champions") employed, at its own expense, many wonderful off-duty Minneapolis Police Officers to provide security for its customers and premises. Champions' great working relationship with the 5th Police Precinct changed when Matthew Clark took over from Eddie Frizell as Inspector of the 5th Precinct.

In retaliation against Champions for reporting drug and gang activity occurring at the bus stop at the corner of Lake Street and Blaisdell Avenue to City Council Member Meg Tuthill, Clark issued a City-wide ban on off-duty police officers working at Champions. It is that ban which contributed to the tragic shooting incident that occurred early this morning.

Champions renews its request that the ban be lifted by the City of Minneapolis and that it be allowed to employ the City's finest officers to provide security for its customers.
:::: UPDATE II ::::

The 51-year-old who was shot and killed was an innocent bystander, according to a Star Tribune report.

From the Strib:
According to Ed Matthews, the bar's attorney, a patron entered the bar, "noticed somebody" and began hitting that person. The person being attacked pulled a gun out of his boot and fired twice, injuring the attacker and killing the 51-year-old, whom Matthews described as an innocent bystander.

"This is tragically unfortunate," he said.

Video cameras stationed throughout the bar captured the shooting, Matthews said. The video has been turned over to police investigators.
The victim's name hasn't yet been released, and no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.

i miss casey's.....  but i also like champions. used to live on the next block. maybe if the liquor laws of that area weren't so racist/classist (no liquor south of lake street unless you are Kari Bartmann) it wouldnt be a breeding ground for crime.

23 y/o SBF, BBW, large ass, thighs, and tits and a deep shaved pussy looking for other hot BBW for hot pussy eating and dilldough play sessions. I am open to all races, but I especially prefer hot and sexy Latinas. I love the taste of pussy and I am looking for someone tonight to come on over and we can eat each other's pussies like they are on offer at Old Country Buffet. I also love sucking on tits (I love women with large nipples) and I also love licking ass (Not required if you are not into that). If you are interested, please email me back ASAP. I am horny and looking for NOW. I have wine and beer and a couple of frozen pizzas to bake in the oven if you are hungry when we are finished. I am looking to host only as I do not have a drivers licence or a car, but I am on a bus line if you are in that predicament too.

WOMEN ONLY!! NO MEN!

I had my 23rd birthday party there.  We had the side room reserved but we spilled out into the patio and had plenty of people joining the party.  It was a great time and there wasn't any riff raff there that wasn't unusual at any bar.

I think they handle the area as best as they can.  You don't just move your business because the area demographics have changed.  Heck they should hold on to that area as long as possible because Uptown is expanding and their property is going to be very valuable in the near future.

Champion's was always a great place to go back when I lived in the hood. It was more of a dive back  then. They really fixed the place up now.

Watched the '91 Stanley Cup there.

Champ's Sports Bar was down the road next to the freeway...THAT was where the brothas hung out: I went in there once and ordered a beer and was told that one beer is all I would get then I would have to leave! Ha-haw!

I visit Champion's to watch the Bears. Sure there are drunks for a 3pm game but I have grown to look forward to meeting and hanging out with "the Brothers." Good people. Good staff.

The issue at Champion's has to be management.  It's not just the neighborhood.  That corner is a bit sketchy but it's nothing like it used to be all along Lake St.  Champion's isn't far from Pat's Tap, or the various restaurants toward Lyndale, none of which anyone would be nervous to patronize.  The Kmart and the grocery store have screwed up that neighborhood, and the apartments on the SW corner of Lake and Nicollet aren't the greatest, but Champion's is by far the worst aspect of that area.  There should be no reason a bar and grill has a lawyer on retainer.  While a new Precinct Inspector might not be willing to "play ball" with Champion's, I'm not hearing any other establishment having problems with the cops.  Maybe Champion's needs to run a tighter ship.  Somebody mentioned Palmer's.  There's a dive bar for sure.  But nobody with any city-sense is afraid of that place or considers it a blight on the neighborhood.

Some people that work there are in on the wrong doing. Including the so called security ,trust me I know and people that really know champions know it too. All racist comments aside because every race of people go there the only type you don't see are white men true enough.Champions is a bad place and if you go there you know it is bad place, this is just the truth ,the area would be served better with another type of establishment. I know people are angry but anger makes you do and say the wrong thing.

Bottom Line is this: When you hang out in bad neighborhoods, and frequent bad establishments, and engage in bad behavior, the likelihood of bad things happening to you is about 1000% percent. Get an education, get a job, and do what the rest of us do. You will find that living in the ghetto and living the ghetto lifestyle will get you nowhere. I take that back. It will get you into a grave.

Lets start making bets as to the victims of these crimes. I am going to bet $100 is was a minority. $99 it was a black guy, $50, it was a Mexican guy, $25 it was a Native American guy, and 1/10th of one cent that it was a white guy.

It might be a dive bar but they were operating it with police protection before the current racist inspector took over that precinct.  It's not dangerous unless you think people of color are dangerous. If that's the case you are a racist biggit and should move to the fucking suburbs or better yet to the southern states. GTFO

I don't mind this place. Went out for the evening there Sat night. Good music, bartender was awesome, lots of large security guys. Sure, you get some unsavory patrons, but for the most part some decent people there...

Note: about the frozen pizzas: They both have meat on them so they are not vegan friendly. But I have some tater tots in the freezer that I can bake up for you if you are a vegan.

@Philbo I didn't know it was a Bears bar. Think I'll still go to Alary's in St. Paul for non-televised Bear games. Seems a lot safer.

You got that right, Phil. They have pinball machines too.

@swmnguy Right - like in the 80s when they said they'd solve the downtown drug and prostitution problems by tearing down Block E - Moby's, Shinders, Brady's, Rifle Sport, etc. That worked out so well, didn't it. Actually, by the next week, all the pimps, prostitutes and dealers were out on the Skyway Theatre block.

goodgod

@swmnguy As someone who lives in that neighborhood it is definitely a blight. no champions = no drugs, pimps, fights, shootings, loitering, hos, cars blaring music in their parking lot, or cruising.

@kennyXObviously, you aren't a very well cultured or educated individual. If you had this "education" you want everyone to get, you'd realize that people in the ghetto don't chose their lifestyle and their behavior is usually recycled by their environment. These bad neighborhoods where they "hang out" are where they grew up. It's all they know as well as know how to survive. They don't have the same choices and opportunities as you and I. Sitting behind your keyboard bashing minorities isn't going to solve any problems. You are welcome to come out from behind your shield of fear and ignorance anytime and educate yourself.

@goodgod@ChazDangerSo what makes you the perfect human being that you think you are?  Seems like you don't know how to use proper sentence structure and I totally shut you down the last time you tried to pick a fight about a subject you know nothing about.

I'm guessing you're the kind of person that stays out of the "big city" because you are too scared of people that don't look like you or dress like you.

Good luck working at the saw mill your whole life.

@goodgod  I believe you.  I don't live too far away,, but far enough I don't see the impact often.  My mother in law lives 2 blocks from Champion's, though, and she says the same thing you do.  The neighborhood is a little iffy, but quite possibly only because of Champion's.  It sounds like a management problem.

@goodgod @kb612 I don't really care that much about Champions bar so not sure what your point is here. What I do care about is blind hate and ignorance toward minorities and people of color. Just because a few sketchy people may hang out there doesn't mean everyone that hangs out there is a criminal.

Go tell that to all the people who have been shot to death in North Minneapolis over the years.

@swmnguy @goodgod there are definitely little pockets of shittiness over there. if you read the police blotters you'll see numerous assaults, robberies and other violent and petty crime from lake down blaisdale to the YMCA. a lot of rental properties and section 8 housing make for a transient neighborhood struggling with crime. don't leave any change in your car's cupholder, you'll wake up with a broken window.

@kb612 Let me make my point clear: 1) scum ass criminals are drawn to that shithole. 2) that shithole draws scum ass criminals to my neighborhood. 3) i don't need apologist pussies like you making excuses for a scum ass criminal magnet 4) therefore, ipsofacto, get the fuck out of my neighborhood. 5) that means you, the scum ass criminals, and the scum ass criminal magnet (whatever worthless race color or creed you all may be)
