Jeff Dubay blasts Bob Collins on the radio, calls him a "cheap-shot artist and a chump"

Dubay's Bob Collins rant was WWE-worthy.
-- Update at bottom --

On his 1500 ESPN radio show today, Jeff Dubay directly addressed the shot Bob Collins took at him on Twitter this morning.

THE BACKSTORY: MPR's Bob Collins takes cocaine shot at Jeff Dubay after Dubay calls for Kill's resignation

Collins, MPR's news blogger, tweeted: "If the face of your radio station is a cocaine addict, the face of your football program can be a guy with epilepsy." He was responding to Dubay's outspoken stance that if Gophers football coach Jerry Kill's seizures cannot be brought under control once and for all, then U of M administrators "need to make a change."

Suffice it to say that Collins' tweet left Dubay a wee bit rankled. Here's what he had to say to Collins this morning (to hear the audio for yourself, click here and listen to hour two of today's Judd & Dubay program beginning around the 6:30 mark):
This just came across on the City Pages. Apparently there is some idiot on MPR named Bob Collins who took a cocaine shot at me because I called for Kill's resignation? I have never once called for Kill's resignation!

Bob Collins -- number one, thanks for the cheap shop, I appreciate it. Secondly, get your facts straight, you idiot, before you go and throw stuff like this around. I have never once called for his resignation. I want the man to continue as the head coach at the U of M if he is physically able to. If he is not, then it's time for some serious discussion about his future. There should be some serious discussion about your future right now because you're nothing but a cheap-shot artist and a chump, Bob Collins.
Reads like a promo the Macho Man Randy Savage would've cut back in the day, doesn't it?

:::: UPDATE ::::

Collins and Dubay have kissed and made up, so to speak: Dubay then asked Collins, "Are we good?" Here's more of the exchange from there: Dubay went on to tell Collins he "might cry. This is getting ridiculous. Thanks for the great words. Couldn't feel worse about my outburst." -- Follow Aaron Rupar on Twitter at @atrupar. Got a tip? Drop him a line at arupar@citypages.com.

Do you have a copy of his most recent drug test? If he's a coke head he would violate his probation and be in jail.

How did we go from a debate about a coach having epilepsy and whether or not he could effectively coach a football team, to slandering people in the media? They get paid to voice their opinion. Voice your opinion about that. Every other announcer has their opinion about the actual question here. So agree or disagree, and say why. It's a debate. No right or wrong answer.

I am only a casual sports fan, but is it just me, or isn't kind of sad that there are radio and TV stations that are dedicated to sports-24-fucking-7? I understand that sports are an important part of American culture (as well as other cultures around the world), and yes, I understand that sports are a huge industry that employs hundreds of thousands of people around the world and earns billions of dollars each year.

But is sports so fucking important that we need radio and TV networks to spend 8 hours (or more) analyzing a fucking football or baseball game when there are far greater issues facing society? I wonder how many thousands of hours Jeff Dubay spent analyzing how much the Vikings, Twins, Wild, and Timberwolves consistently suck, when he could have spent that time cooking food at a homeless shelter? (The teams would have sucked regardless of Dubay's commentary) Oh wait! There is no money in that.

There are men.....grown men....who value their Fantasy Football picks more importantly than they do their own families. They will choose to spend their free time looking at stats for their "dream team", while neglecting their sons and daughters all in the name of "sports". Because we all know that if their Fantasy Football team wins, they can pretend to be the jocks that they never were in high school.

I'm looking at you, Dubay..............................................................

Pathetic.

You know, look, here's the thing: What I pointed out this morning was the irony involved in an opinion that Jeff shared relative to the nature of the pushback Souhan was getting and a reading of the blog this morning should've revealed the irony in Jeff's situation and how we support or supported him and Kill's situation in how we do/don't support him. Nothing more.

Let's be clear: Jeff not only CAN be the face of his radio station; he should be.

But far  more offensive -- at least to me -- is this indecent assault on a guy's struggles and how he's overcome them surrounding a story about a coach's struggles. See, that's irony too!

Anyone who thinks that they have some sort of ally in me for this taunting and name calling and character assassinating that I've seen against Jeff today is sadly ignorant and misinformed. I should've used the word "recovered" or "recovering" when I referred to him as an addict, but I didn't because the people I know who I've referred to as recovered or recovering always insist they are addicts and they have an addition. That's an unfortunate imprecision by not fully understanding the best terminology and the people who misinterpreted that.

But I don't know what to make of all of this other stuff. "A coke head moron who threw away a good job?" Jesus, man, he made a terrible mistake. We are weak and it happens and the test of our character is not that we made a mistake, but how we fix it.

By that standard -- at least that I can tell and as I tried to say in the comments of 5x8 this morning -- Jeff's character at the moment should be what Jerry Kill's situation could be -- an inspiration for all of us to consider how we treat those who aren't perfect.

We can start right now. Why would we not want to?

Jeff Skinner... and Dubay's comments about Kill are ok? Dubay opened himself up to comments about his drug addiction past by saying Kill shouldn't be able to coach because of epilepsy. He made a cheap shot towards Kill. Like the old saying goes, if you can't take it don't dish it out. Dubay apparently can't take it so he should have not dished it out.

Kent Erickson
Kent Erickson

Dubay had apparently never heard of the word 'irony'. His comments about Kill were cheap shots just like he is accusing Bob Collins of doing against him. What a tool.

bcollins10
bcollins10

And a minor point, which Jeff wasn't aware of before his assessment, is that the response had NOTHING to do with whether he does or doesn't think Jerry Kill should stay or go. It has to do with his assertion in his tweet that the pushback against Souhan was nothing more political correctness (PC),  which is the card you play when you run out of logic so that people will retweet to their respective corners.

It's not about being politically correct; it's about whether you want to be ignorant or you want to be educated.

Granted these are all complicated issues that confound City Pages to consider when writing their blogs, but people who sit at the adult table can figure it out.

bcollins10

My support for Jeff has been unwavering.  over the years and today. Anyone who read the City Pages comments on the other post, or the explanation in today's 5x8 on NewsCut will find that the "someone said you said"  debate actually masks -- intentionally or not -- a point that makes for lousy page views. Go read it. http://blogs.mprnews.org/newscut/2013/09/5-x-8-backtracking-on-jerry-kill/.

Or not. It's up to you. You can be just as informed or uninformed as you want. But calling the guy a cokehead. C'mon people. We're better than that.

There's really nothing to see here other than City Pages trying to gin up some page views because they haven't been able to get copies of my boudoir photos.

Dubay is a coke head moron that threw away a cake job on KFAN and inexplicably got another cake job talking sports again even though he's a douche. If anyone should be fired its certainly not Bob Collins, one of the few news people left with intelligence and integrity, but instead the petulant man child Dubay who shouldn't have his job in the first place.

@MarkDayton So sick of bad people spewing misinformation like this. I value family, always have, always will. MIne betrayed me, not the other way around, and it's heartbreaking. By the way, I don't play fantasy football and if you're concerned about how I spend my free time mr. homeless shelter you shouldn't be. I meet one on one with any struggling addict or alcoholic that reaches out as well as speaking at schools and treatment centers. Oh and if you want to know about homeless shelters just contact Emma Norton Services in St. Paul and ask what I've done for them. My values are intact and priorities in order and somehow I manage to do it without hiding behind a keyboard and lobbing grenades at people on the internet. You're the worst kind, just keep living your pathetic misinformed life and try to take down people you know nothing about while never letting the truth get in your way.

@MarkDayton I can't stand people who have no clue what they're talking about spewing crap like this. I value family, always have and always will. I was betrayed by mine, not the other way around, and it's been heartbreaking. Haven't played fantasy football in over ten years by the way. My values are intact and priorities in order but thanks for checking in with your terribly misinformed opinion. You're what's wrong with the world.

@bcollins10  I've found Dubay to be entertaining as a sports talk-show persona. However, what he's been revealing about his character and perception on Twitter lately makes me less interested in hearing what he thinks about even sports, much less anything else.  Going through life as a thin-skinned hothead with a big mouth isn't easy even if you aren't a public figure with a well-known history of personal struggles.  When all those factors do apply, you're a train-wreck in slow-motion.

jdubay68
jdubay68

@Kent Erickson You hear what you want and spread lies. That makes you a horrible person in my book. I'm on record saying I like Kill and hope for him to be healthy enough to continue coaching the Gophers but if his disease causes seizures to continue during games on the sideline you are going to have to address whether he can continue coaching. If you doubt that all you have to do is read Kill's own words from August where he states that it's not ok for a coach to miss a half and if he can't get it under control he'll walk away. So how is my opinion out of line or insensitive when the coach said the same thing. My guess is you heard my take second hand  and never bothered to find out for yourself. Pathetic.

@Jeff SkinnerHi Jeff. Here's what I wrote:

Dubay, who makes his living at KSTP Radio, struggled with his cocaine addiction. Minnesota did not turn him away. It wasn’t political correctness. It was the right thing to do for someone with an illness.

And I further explained in the comments section of today's 5x8:

Cocaine addiction is NOT a sin. It's a disease like any other addiction. It deserves support of people, as Dubay got (except his previous employer, for the record), he more than deserved the opportunity he now has and as a result of his very public profile, a lot of other people have learned about addiction.

Now if what you're saying is it IS a sin, he deserved to be banished, and his life played out hidden to protect our sensibilities, I would not describe that as some sort of anti-PC statement. I would just call it ignorance. And a terribly missed opportunity.

Read it again. It's not too hard to understand.

If Dubay can be the face of his program, Jerry Kill can be the face of his. I don't consider either to be anything anyone should be ashamed of.

Which part of that causes your ache?

swmnguy
swmnguy topcommenter

@ajlalk3 Jeff, calm down and read Collins' actual Tweet.  He never "takes a shot" at Dubay.  He does mention the fact, which everyone knows, that Dubay has had very public addiction issues, and yet his employer sees fit to employ him.  Only a very thin-skinned fellow would take that as a "shot."

@Randall G Baxter Because thousands of people tune in daily to hear them. Dubay was one of the most popular sports personalities in town for almost 10 years. @ajlalk3 One of the most popular? I'm not sure he was that popular. His show drew big ratings, but did that make him popular? I'm sure popularity and ratings are one in the same to you, so I guess your argument wins. Anybody on a major sports radio station, the only one on the air when Dubay worked at KFAN, could be called "popular." Put Bob Collins on KFAN circa 2000 and he'd have been "popular" as a sports radio talk show host.

And don't bring up the term talent when trying to defend Dubay. Weakens your argument.
