Mpls cops use flashers to illegally park, grab leisurely sandwich at Milio's [PHOTOS]

Last time we checked, a growling stomach doesn't count as an emergency.
Reader Sam Richards passed along photos showing two Minneapolis cops using their emergency flashers to illegally park, then take their time grabbing a sandwich at the Lyn-Lake Milio's.

"They waited in line too, which gave away that it wasn't a police call," Richards told City Pages, adding that the photos were taken around 1:30 a.m. on the morning of September 8.

The photo at the top of this post shows how the officers parked their squad. This photo shows them inside the sandwich joint with their car still illegally parked and the flashers on...

... and this one shows them waiting in line to make an order:

"It caught my eye because I thought one of the cops was the was one who was really brutal to Occupy and Occupy Homes protesters," Richards said, referring to the cop at left in the photo above. "I thought, this guy is continuing the same thing he's always doing with corruption and abuse of authority."

Having served for 35 years as a Cop, I can factually state that if I had a nickel for every time I dumped my meal to leave my lunch break to respond to a hot call I would, literally, have a pickle jar full of nickels. I have no doubt that these guys would do the same. I know the Lyn/Lake neighborhood well and it is likely these Cops would have had to park 1-2 blocks away in order to park "legally". Now, with that in mind, here is a scenario for you. A LIKELY scenario. You have a friend who lives Uptown. She has just gotten into bed after a night out when she hears the sound of her screen being cut. She calls 911. These Cops are, by far, the closest to your friend's home. Would YOU prefer, for the sake of your friend, that the Cops be able to run out the door and be on the way to save your friend from a potential rape in SECONDS? Or would you rather that they be delayed for 1-2 minutes while they jog around the corner and down the block to their cars because they did not want to incur your jealousy because you had to park further from the restaurant? How much do you think can happen to your friend at the hands of a man with a knife during those 1-2 minutes? What is your preference? Be serious, be real, and TRY to give an honest answer.

Get used to it people. There are two multiple sets of rules out there....to borrow a quote from Blade Runner, "if you're not cop, you're little people".

Seriously? Think about it - if something happened while they were getting food, would you want them to be 5 blocks away from their car and have to run there before responding? They have to park close by so that they can respond to emergencies quickly. Some of you need to check your prejudices before you open your mouths to complain.

What world do you people live in?? Get over it. Being a police officer is dangerous and hard. Quit bitching or do what they do everyday defending your whiny asses and the community you and your families live in.

Shut up city pages. Do you want them to walk 5 blocks there and back. Wouldn't you want them to come quickly if you need them?

Cops are never there when people "need them" the only thing they do is write tickets. No crime has ever been stopped by a pig. They should get a fine like everyone else. They are not above the law.

they'd have to park five blocks away to park legally? what is this, NYC? these fuckers are eating at milios. if they can't find legal parking, go to some other shitty sandwich shop. just because this isn't the biggest of deals doesn't mean they should be able to do it.

Greg Hernandez

Well at least this is the worst thing a cop has ever done.

Who cares, they don't get lunch breaks and if something happens and they get a call, they have to stop what they're doing and go.

Kent Erickson

Lisa...so how is that different from other people? I wasn't able to eat lunch either at work a couple days ago, too busy. Lots of people can't take lunch everyday, but when we do, we don't break the law in doing so.

It takes more gas to start a vehicle than leave it idle for 30 minutes or so. Also what if the vehicle didn't start after picking up/having lunch, & someone is close by getting stabbed?

Thomas Zocher

I care if it's illegally parked so they can get lunch. Why? Because I get a ticket if I illegally park to get lunch. Don't defend them, dude...because this isn't the only time they go overboard on doing whatever they want - they do it all the time. All day, every day.

Kevin M Frazier
Kevin M Frazier

that`s nothing they use their flashers to go thru lights too because they are too fricking lazy to wait like the rest of us they totally over use their authority but no one does anything about it

Thomas Zocher
Thomas Zocher

These fucking assholes do this shit all the time - to park, to get through a light to get to lunch quicker and who knows what else. They probably don't give a shit, after all they are God, right? But any cop who does want a better image in their community for the police force, listen up... There are big incidents that occur that makes a cop and their cop team look bad - racial profiling, etc...then there are ALL of the every day little things that sit in the back of our minds and make it clear to us that you are a bunch of abusive, power-loving assholes -- this kind of shit is one example of that. SHAPE THE FUCK UP! We do pay your salary.

If you really want to see parking abuse just go to any Wal Mart and watch the walmartians park their vehicles in the fire lane. The fire lane is painted yellow and posted as no parking, but there is plenty of lazy slobs that think they're entitled to park anywhere they please.

Ryan Moe

People complaining here about abuse are silly people. How did this effect you in anyway whatsoever? Who cares where a cop parks their car, I mean really? Go complain about something else that dies not impact your life or hurt anyone anywhere ever.

Kent Erickson
Kent Erickson

Emily...yeah but it's the departments own fault they are under such scrutiny. They brought that on themselves. It's their own fault every thing they do is being examined more closely now and people are complaining about the littlest things. I would have no problem with them illegally parking if it wasn't an extension of shady dealings involving the police already going on in other areas.

I see them do it all the time especially fridley cops, I go to Snap fitness after my 3-11 Shift at the Hotel and not many cars on the road I seen them atleast twice hit the lights just to run the red light Both times pannicking thinking they were coming after me

seriously?  i dont find anything in this artical newsworthy.  next time you're in a car crash or get hit on your bike and the police have to ditch out of lunch to get there... i think you will appricate that they are parked where they are with the engine running.

@PatScott if it takes those officers 1-2 mins to jog a block or two, the mpls pd should reevaluate their physical exam

@Paul Harvieux Idle a car for 10 hours, vs turning it on and off 20 times, note the difference in gas usage. A tool of the gas industry could perhaps believe such trite exaggerations, but really, do you honestly believe this moronic premise or are you at the absolute limit of your faculties just trying to repeat this pathetic lie?

@Ryan Moe In a way the police are training the public not to ever take them seriously whenever they park their cars with the lights on.
