Lehr fell while trying to travel between the highlighted window and the rooftop ledge just below.
Around 4:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon, 19-year-old Stephanie Lehr fell from the sixth floor of the University of Minnesota's Yudof Hall dorm building to the ground below. She was reportedly conscious when first responders arrived at the scene, but died from her injuries yesterday morning.

Lehr, a Minneapolis resident, wasn't a student at the U, but she was visiting a friend who is. Authorities say she was likely trying to get from her friend's dorm room window to a nearby rooftop ledge when she accidentally fell nearly 100 feet to a courtyard below. (At this point, however, it's unclear whether she was traveling from the window to the ledge or from the ledge back through the window to the dorm when she fell.)

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner listed Lehr's cause of death as multiple blunt force injuries due to the fall.

Police say alcohol was found in the dorm room, but at this point it's unclear whether intoxication played a role in Lehr's death. They also say they've never heard of students removing screens from dorm windows to access rooftop areas in buildings like Yudof.

There was no need for Lehr to risk her life by trying to jump from the window to the rooftop, as the ledge is accessible from a door on the sixth floor of the building, the Star Tribune reports.

This is truly sad, and yes, stupid. I'm surprised anyone survives our youthful naivete'!

When I think of some of the things I did it makes me cringe. Fortunately, I have always had a healthy fear of heights, though.

Logan... in the one block where live downtown in LA, we've 10 people jump out of the windows intentionally since I've been here, and four even sadder which were accidental. 12 of these 14 were in 2010 alone

If you take a look at the above photo, it does not take a physics expert to deduce that the likelihood of being able to jump from the window to the lower level rooftop deck is not only impossible (unless you have a rocket launcher attached to your body....which she probably thought she might have being that she was obviously under the heavy influence of something), it also shows that stupidity played a huge role in this incident.

This story should not be labeled under "Tragedy", but rather under "Dude....I think I can fly!".

Stupid is as stupid does. No sympathy here.

But I am sure some Liberal somewhere will place the blame not on her, but rather the Conservative owner of the construction company who failed to design the building to accommodate 19-year olds who think that they can defy gravity. And I am also sure that the DLF-University of Minnesota Coalition will find some way to blame Bush for this.

right by my house, obvious alcohol plays a part in this

You guys are being dumbassses. This was an accident, couple of kids being kids and unfortunately this time things ended up in the worse case scenario. I'm sure there"s many people out there that have done things that could've gotten them killed. I knew this girl, please give her respect. this isn't a forum for arguing weather pot or alcohol is better.

They are full of it. They have absolutely heard of students removing window screens to try to get to the rooftop ledges; as a former CA at the U, I can assure you that is true. They even put me in a room that had the window over the ledge because, as an employee, it was much less likely that I would be that stupid. Moreover, those doors to the roof tops are locked and for employees only. With that being said, definitely alcohol. The only dorm security is a couple of resident advisers doing rounds twice an evening (about two seconds to pass the door) and a security monitor a few times at night. There isn't really outside security.

Alcohol HAD TO BE involved or why else would a person be THAT STUPID

Sadly that's not a rare occurrence. I remember a similar incident when I was a student there a few years ago.

How is dorm security supposed to know she climbed out of the window if the door is closed?

The best view of the Lyn-Lake street fest back in the day was on top of Occie's Bar and we had to climb out on the fire escape and jump over to the building. All those bridges in Minneapolis and under Nicollet Island were so tempting too.

Where is Dorm security when this stuff is going on?

Or run from the cops and kill another man in Minneapolis this morning. Keep drinking dummies.

And alcohol is legal and marijuana is not? I'm a tell you one thing, a pot smoker would never climb out on some bullshit like that.

@kennyX You're the biggest piece of shit I've seen in awhile. And believe me, I take big shits.

@kennyXrocket launcher?  Do you know what one of those is?  Explain to me, physics expert, how one would get from point A to point B with a rocket launcher, please.

Also, you realize that logic dictates she attempted this trip, not from the open window, but the one above it....right...smart guy?  Some conservative somewhere should consider going back to some liberal college and getting an education...

@kennyX Stupidity plays a huge role in everyone of your posts including this one.

You really should think before you type. You sit behind your computer you coward and say whatever you like because no one can see you. I am Stephanie's aunt. We are grieving tremendously over losing her. I have refrained from reading any comments all week because I have been with her mother, her father, her sister, her grandmother and grandfather, and many friends and relatives mourning our loss. I would appreciate some respect for what we are going though. It was a tragic accident.

@kennyXI'm currently a student at the U and heard about this tragic event. My heart goes out to her family and friends. However, what is almost just as sad are the nasty comments I've been reading online related to this accident. Nobody has any right to call her stupid, say this is an "act of Darwinism", degrade her or her family. You don't know her and you don't know what the circumstances were. What if she was your daughter, sister, cousin or granddaughter? I know for a FACT those comments would then not have been said. Please think about how you would be affected if someone close to you died in this tragic way before you comment.

@kennyX You didn"t need a rocket launcher, the space between the window and roof top was less then 3 feet. Enough so that one could easily make the trip. Life is unpredictable, but maybe because of your huge muscles and ego you think you can control everything. I wish you good luck sir and please try to think for a second before you say something stupid and ignorant.

@shaqjam I'm sure MOST of us have done things that could have gotten us killed.  Kids think they are indestructible and that bad things would never happen to them.  SO very sorry you lost a friend. They can never be replaced.  (side note:  it is whether not weather)

@Stuttering John It's a shame more people don't think like you here. Is bong water still illegal in this state? Most people go right for the pearl-clutching when you even bring up weed around town, but you know if it's a Saturday afternoon Surdyk's is gonna be packed...

@shaqjam That's not him in the picture.  He'd be too busy blaming liberals for his fat to do the work required.

@shaqjam

Yeah, but she didn't easily make the trip. She died. So who is stupid and ignorant? Me or a a dead dumb fuck who couldn't "make" the trip?

Discuss..............(and my big muscles could not have saved me if I fell 6 long stories to my impending death).

Moron.

shaqjam

@kennyX @shaqjam Yeah she did die, thanks for the breaking news. You"re stupid and ignorant. Do you realize who you"re calling a dumb fuck? Someone that had friends, a family, a whole 19 years behind her, pictures, memories, mistakes, success, sadness, happiness, weekends and weekdays. In another words a fucking human being. What gives you the right to pass such judgment? Is it maybe cause you're alive- cause we're all born to die my friend. But while you're alive you should maybe think about spreading postive energy instead of bashing the dead.
