Brutal treatment of pigs at Minnesota hog farm secretly filmed by employee [VIDEO]

As is the case at many other hog farms, pigs at Rosewood are kept in cramped crates.
With the help of an employee who was secretly working for them, animal rights group Mercy for Animals recently published an undercover video showing the brutal treatment of pigs at a hog farm in Pipestone, Minnesota.

The video shows piglets getting castrated without anesthesia and slammed to death on the floor, among other brutalities.

Luke Minion, CEO of Pipestone Management Co., the company that owns Rosewood, doesn't deny the footage is legitimate but says the practices are a standard part of the pork production process.

From the Star Tribune:
Luke Minion, CEO of the Pipestone Management Co., said piglets are euthanized because they are sickly enough that they won't survive otherwise. They may have breathing problems or broken bones.

Euthanasia through blunt force is approved by the National Pork Producers Council, and when done correctly is "very fast and pain free," he said. Piglets are castrated and "tailed docked" in order "to prevent them from suffering later in life," Minion said. For instance, pigs often chew each others tails.
Mercy for Animals used the footage to persuade authorities to obtain a search warrant and investigate Rosewood, but the sheriff's office ultimately decided against pursuing criminal charges, the Strib reports.

Here's the graphic footage, which was originally posted on a site called Walmart Cruelty (a tagline above the video says, "The hidden cost of Walmart's pork"):

Curtis Meyer the ways we've created to make OUR lives easier when dealing with livestock is not an excuse. . Its just a way of justifying the cruel things we do..

Wake up consumers! I'm sure walmart isn't the only place that does this.

Know your farmer. Smaller family farms do not do these practices, as to the abuse, but there are indeed differences and some are beneficial - as to not keeping sows in cages and letting them roam free in a pasture. They will usually have an enclosure to take shelter in and the other thing they need is water - a pond to roll in to clean their hides. The other aspect I do not care for, is many farms will use the table food scraps and feed them to the hogs in a slop bucket, as an additive to the feed they eat in addition to their rooting - which gives them acorns (and other tree nuts) which hogs do love. The insects, grubs and other creatures in the soil also add to their diet. Pastured hogs eat many kinds of weed based vegetation and will gladly eat toxic weeds like poison ivy and oak, and other plants that can overrun an area. A disadvantage to letting them roam is sometimes they can eat a chicken that strays into a pen - (going under a break, or through a gap in the fence) and ducks, geese too can be eaten by the hogs, if they are simply clipped wing birds, if cornered. They also eat their own young if inexperienced as a birthing sow, so that may bother some. But it happens.

If you were to release all the sows from those crates...they would eat you. No joke. Pigs are not noble creatures. I'm not saying pigs deserve to be brutalized, I'm just saying city people generally don't have a clue when it comes to this sort of thing.

Can't we just kill any fucking assholes who would do this to make more money? Hey, asshole if you are reading this...you are a piece of shit! You deserve a worse quality of life than the animals in your "care". On second thought, I retract my earlier "kill" question. Let's just lock them up for several years in cages too small to move around in as they shit and piss on themselves, then we kill them and feed their meat to the next group of assholes who decide that this is a good way to make a buck. I hope you rot in hell!

Um...I grew up on a farm with a farrowing operation on it, and I hate to tell you this, but this is how farrowing is done. If the sows aren't contained to crates, they will step on, lie on, chew on the piglets. And they aren't contained to crates their "whole lives." The sows are kept in crates until the piglets are old enough to eat solid food, which is usually a few weeks. Tails, testicles, and teeth are clipped for legit reasons. Not due to spite or evil intent. I'm not saying this isn't ugly. I hated it. That's why I went to college, and left the farm behind. But, like it or not, this is how sausage gets made. And I like pizza. If you've got a better, more humane, cheaper, less-smelly, way of farrowing hogs, I'm sure farmers would be the first ones in line to use it.

Nothing wrong with eating meat, it's the disrespect in the others creatures life that is so disturbing. Throwing baby pigs on the ground is "standard practice"? The abuse, torture, and commercialization of life is horrendous. It's takes a sociopath to do these things. It's funny too, because as an animal suffers, is abused, and experiences fear it releases hormones and other chemicals into it's blood that gets into the meat. This in turn is ingested by the person who then over time has adverse effects from it. Some may call this Karma. I call it science.

The sick thing is that the actions in this video are completely legal. I think it misses the point to single out Wal-Mart, as this could be going on legally in any farm, large or small. The most effective way to oppose this brutality is to stop eating meat. Unless you’re hunting your own meat or have a personal relationship with the person who supplies your meat, you never really know for sure what conditions your meal used to live under.

Everybody who cannot stomach to look at this, who feels it is immoral and unethical to treat animals like that, please share this article. If we reach only 1% of people who will stop a moment and, perhaps, reconsider their buying/eating behavior, we already made a positive impact. It's not enough to just say 'aw, this is awful, I feel so sorry for them' - we need to do what's right and try to educate as many people as possible.

@Curtis Meyer Sounds like city people really don't have a clue, eh?  Free-range pigs are extremely intelligent and friendly animals.  They do not "eat you".  Animals that have been abused, brutalised and confined their whole lives?  Well, if you did that to me and then let me out ... hmmm, tastes like chicken.
