Bummer: The Metrodome won't be blown up

Minneapolis' skyline will be losing its Teflon soon.
Here's a dose of bad news for those of you who looked forward to taking a half day off work sometime in February and heading downtown to see the worst stadium in America (in Time's opinion) get violently demolished: The Metrodome won't be blown up.

HOLIDAY GIFT? Metrodome roof converted into bags [IMAGES]

Earlier this week, the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority released the timeline of the Metrodome's demise, and "imploding" isn't part of the agenda.

"They're not going to do an implosion, they're going to take it down section by section in a more traditional demolition fashion, so we don't have a bunch of dust and dirt that's kicked up all over the neighborhood," stadium authority chair Michele Kelm-Helgen told WCCO.

First, the roof will be deflated for the final time, 'CCO reports. Then the stadium walls will be removed piece by piece, and before a month has come and gone the Metrodome will be nothing more than a memory. (The unforgettable blue plastic seats and other items from the dome will eventually be sold.)

That's kinda sad, but fret not. By the summer of 2016, the stadium we all love to hate will be replaced by the giant vagina in the sky known as Zygi-land.

The Metrodome was a dump when it opened 30+ years ago.  And it was a wretched major league sports venue. However, it does serve a purpose and still does.  For one thing, it's been paid-for for decades.  And as an enclosed sports venue in a northern city, it has a public value like no other building. High school and college baseball will be heavily impacted without the Dome. That place, dump though it is, is used nearly constantly, every minute of every day.  We should have put the Vikings' football palace out in the 'burbs somewhere, or on the Farmer's Market location, or somewhere around 24th Street and 14th Ave. or so.  But the loss of the Dome as a public space will cause problems.

have one final game there with all players and fans in it and set it on fire, blocking all exits. and do the same with all the rest of the NFL. all at once. please.

"'imploding' isn't part of the agenda."

That is reserved for the team itself....

they should take it apart as nice as they can and sell bits and parts of it to the fans... cut the turf up and sell them as 4"x4" squares with CoF cards.

It is a waste of money. But at least these tax dollars won't be spent on Wars, welfare, bail outs or free heath care. And we can watch the Vikings choke in style....

Sad as I'll be to see it go replacement is necessary. You cannot get to the bathroom and get a hot dog during a ten minute halftime due to the long lines in both the men's and women's bathrooms...having been to ford field and how nice and wide the corridors are, and the many options of food...so excited for the new one. I wish the could just implode it...

My only request is that the contents be recycled as much as possible. Seats, turf, food prep equipment...there is a lot of stuff that could be useful somewhere else. Don't throw it out!

It's sad that no matter how fancy and new they make the stadium, it will never have the history or charm of Lambert Field. Packers fans have it better than Vikings fans in every way. #TweetsAreYours

The Metrodome is 30 years old and it shows. Between the narrow hallways, small black and white scoreboards and standard food amenities, the dome is a dump. No matter how it gets torn down, do it quickly.

Don't like the idea at all. The Vikequeens don't deserve a new stadium. Wait til all the glass in this fantasy stadium busts. WHAT A JOKE. WERE NOT LAS VEGAS HERE!

They could inflate it with helium and send it off into the atmosphere hopefully to land on Sarah Palin's house overlooking Russia.

Preferably I'd like to see it renovated cause, WE DONT NEED A NEW ONE. However, controlled explosions with bits of wonton destruction would be kind of cool.

Fill it with space heaters and Jiffy Pop! Watch it explode while screening all the Vikings Super Bowl wins on the side of the IDS. Wait a minute..?

lets get a new team and keep the old stadium, the team is going down before the stadium anyways and imploding the dome will be more exciting, heck, just get rid of both, put the team in the stadium and blow them both up!

@Danielle Henkels I can buy a pack of hot dogs and a package of buns for what the Dome charges for one hot dog. I can buy a 6-pk of beer for what the Dome charges for 1 beer. And there are no lines to the bathroom at my place. I get a great picture on the TV and plenty of replays. How you suckers keep paying out the big bucks for this crap is beyond me.
