Keith Ellison, other House Dems arrested (but not for beating up Republicans)

Categories: Keith Ellison

The sometimes hot-tempered Keith Ellison and a bunch of his House Democratic colleagues were arrested in D.C. today, but it wasn't for beating the hell out of those stubborn Republicans who sit across the aisle from them (at least when the federal government is, you know, working).

Instead, it was for blocking traffic along Independence Avenue during a protest for immigration reform.

From the Star Tribune:
As protestors marched toward the U.S. Capitol, Ellison and several other House Democrats sat in the middle of Independence Avenue, blocking rush hour traffic.

Police led Ellison away in cuffs shortly after 4 p.m.

Ellison's office said the move was an act of "civil disobedience" designed to urge Congress to pass legislation that would allow the nation's undocumented immigrants to apply for U.S. citizenship.
Ellison was also arrested while protesting the expulsion of aid groups from Darfur in front of the Sudanese Embassy in Washington back in April 2009.

More context on today's arrest comes from Politico:
Tuesday's rally, officially called "Camino Americano" ("American Road") follows events in more than 100 cities across the nation on Saturday to make a similar push for comprehensive immigration reform. The event was designed to pressure Congress - and more specifically, the GOP-led House of Representatives - to act on immigration reform this year, once a top priority on Capitol Hill that had fallen by the wayside as other major issues took over the congressional calendar.
Immigration reform would be nice, but first things first: Ellison and his colleagues gotta get the hot mess that is Congress back up and running.

In my opinion a represantative must never been arrested while they are serving as congressman!

So, let me get this straight...the left has been complaining about the right refusing to fund a 'legally passed law', while the left is protesting against other legally passed laws? Laws they refuse to even enforce any more...Hmmmmm...

I really like how Ellison is advocating the rights of those who entered the country illegally. I also like the fact that he represents a district that has the highest crime rates in Minnesota.

Apparently, Ellison enjoys crime.

Ashley, blocking traffic so hard working citizens who want to get home after a hard days work and are having to be delayed because of this protest is applause worthy? Have you ever been to DC? If you had you would know traffic is a nightmare anyway, especially on streets like Independence Avenue, and this traffic just adds to hard working Americans (the very same Americans our elected officials are supposed to represent) commute and headache. Yeah thats applause worthy.

Let's see instead of working on a budget they are blocking traffic....

I am so grateful to have a congressperson i can vote *for* and not just pick the least harmful. Ellison is accessible and hard working. You can't judge someone based on every little thing and how it personally relates to you. I have disagreed with him on a few votes, but I never think it's because someone has paid him off. I've watched him over the years, and he has always stood up for the little guy. We are lucky to have him.

That's funny because I sent him a letter a month ago about an immigration issue I'm having and got no response... interesting how a politician acts when no one is watching.

He's as much a shill as the rest of them. It's all for publicity, along the lines of Michele Bachmann's photo op with WWII Vets at the shut down memorial in DC.

Rep. Ellison is absolutely correct. These undocumented Americans must be granted full citizenship now. They deserve full access to all US entitlement programs, and they must be allowed to vote in the 2014 elections. It is unconscionable that the US has immigration restrictions. <sharing from Strib comments.>

I know. He's a bully on the play ground.....maybe he should take his toys, go home, and stay there. He and many others in Washington are doing nothing to help the American people. Dem or Rep we should all be disgusted and vote in new reps next time.

He stated on talk radio last week that he needs to pay his bills. I'm pretty sure all those Federal employees that have been furloughed need to pay their bills too.

I think you're thinking of a different set of congress-people who you are angry with (i.e. shutdown, sequestration etc.).

Yeah Kim, totally far from reality. Expecting our politicians to actually voice our opinions?! INSANE.

@Deanna Stands He's not going to jail. First of all, nobody goes to jail for blocking traffic. Second, members of Congress enjoy immunity while they are in office. It's in the Constitution. Otherwise, an opposition Party could simply throw the other Party's Representatives in jail during key votes. One wingnut Rep from Idaho used this this provision for decades to avoid paying taxes, until he was voted out of office.

The entire point of a non-violent civil disobedience action is to get arrested. It's a purely symbolic, principled stand. Disagree with him or agree, but understand what happened beyond his arrest for blocking traffic.

Onan

@bryanwade3  - Well, yeah, that's the whole "civil disobedience" part of it.

@CinBlueland Racist idiots like you only care about keeping brown people as second class citizens.  If you weren't a bigot at your core you'd complain about the businesses that hire illegal immigrants.  You'd work to make sure Congress punishes the bad business owners that hire illegals and suppress wages.  You'd care about their horrible working conditions.  You'd care about providing a smart path to citizenship so that America stays strong by attracting the best and the brightest from all around the world.  But you don't.  You only care about keeping brown people out because you are a racist and an idiot.  Immigration makes a country strong.  We are a nation of immigrants.  Your stupidity and racism are why Republicans are such a joke.

  - Maybe you should ask Congressman John Boehner to hold the vote to reopen the government? He and his GOP cronies in the House were the ones who shut it down. He admitted it a couple days ago.

@MicheleBachmann @CinBlueland Thank you noble white warrior. Us brown folk would never get by without your guiding hand.

BTW, just a thought why don't you take the second half of your response and send it to Keith. They all sound like good ideas that he should be working on instead of sitting in the street for a photo op.

MicheleBachmann
MicheleBachmann topcommenter

@CinBlueland Of course you are against those ideas since you vote for Republicans and they would never do anything to punish the business owners that own them completely.  If you are so opposed to the bad business owners you would rant and rave about them but you don't.  For some reason you only have venomous hateful things to say about the poor people who just come here to make a better life for their families.  Anyway you keep ranting about the evil brown people who just want to be lazy and take our entitlements.   It's a mystery why someone might think you are a racist huh?

CinBlueland
CinBlueland topcommenter

@MicheleBachmann @CinBluelandSo you're not going to offer your recommendations to Keith?

"work to make sure Congress punishes the bad business owners that hire illegals and suppress wages.  You'd care about their horrible working conditions.  You'd care about providing a smart path to citizenship so that America stays strong by attracting the best and the brightest from all around the world. I'm not against any of those ideas.
