Instead, it was for blocking traffic along Independence Avenue during a protest for immigration reform.
From the Star Tribune:
As protestors marched toward the U.S. Capitol, Ellison and several other House Democrats sat in the middle of Independence Avenue, blocking rush hour traffic.Ellison was also arrested while protesting the expulsion of aid groups from Darfur in front of the Sudanese Embassy in Washington back in April 2009.
Police led Ellison away in cuffs shortly after 4 p.m.
Ellison's office said the move was an act of "civil disobedience" designed to urge Congress to pass legislation that would allow the nation's undocumented immigrants to apply for U.S. citizenship.
More context on today's arrest comes from Politico:
Tuesday's rally, officially called "Camino Americano" ("American Road") follows events in more than 100 cities across the nation on Saturday to make a similar push for comprehensive immigration reform. The event was designed to pressure Congress - and more specifically, the GOP-led House of Representatives - to act on immigration reform this year, once a top priority on Capitol Hill that had fallen by the wayside as other major issues took over the congressional calendar.Immigration reform would be nice, but first things first: Ellison and his colleagues gotta get the hot mess that is Congress back up and running.
