Michele Bachmann compares subsidized health care to crack cocaine

CrackBachmann.jpg
She also recently said dying from Obamacare is "the greatest fear that Americans have," so, as always, we'd take her words with a grain of blow.
Michele Bachmann isn't upset the federal government has shut down over Congress' never-ending Obamacare squabble, because, in her view, the situation is akin to a drug dealer running dry, preventing a junkie from getting their next fix.

Asked during an interview yesterday why she thinks Senate Democrats have thus far refused to negotiate with Obamacare-hating House Republicans, Bachmann said, "I think the reason is because President Obama can't wait to get Americans addicted to the crack cocaine of dependency on more government health care."

Then, referring to Democrats, Bachmann offered up a quote which makes us wonder whether she was hitting the powder herself prior to the interview.

"All they want to do is buy love from people by giving them massive government subsidies," she said.

Not only does Bachmann think Obamacare is like crack, but she also stands by her statement -- mocked by Obama himself last week -- that the Affordable Care Act "literally kills women, kills children, kills senior citizens."

"You bet this can happen," Bachmann said during a Friday interview with Wolf Blitzer. "That is what I'm worried about. Not just me, people all across the United States. So this is literally an issue of life and death. I don't want to be proved right."

In fact, polling shows a plurality of Americans "blame congressional Republicans for a government shutdown," and a majority agree Congress should approve a budget and end the damn thing. We'd wager that's a higher percentage than those who are worried about being put down by the government once Obamacare is fully implemented.

Then again, since she isn't running for office again next year, Bachmann can pretty much say anything she wants these days. The next year should be fun!

I don't have a huge issue with the concept of Obamacare other than the fact that it was shoved down our throats and that you are required to purchase it or pay a penalty. The people who are going to suffer are the working poor (those who earn just enough above amount that would disqualify them for 100% subsidized care).

For example. I am 27 years old and am going to school full time and working full time at an $11/hr job. My financial aid only covers a portion of my tuition. I have a $200/month payment plan with the school. Between my rent, utilities, tuition, transportation, and groceries, I can barely get by. If I signed up for Obamacare, I would have to pay $100/month (under the cheapest plan and it only covers 60% of costs). Well guess what?  I don't have that extra $100 a month. That's the difference between me eating or not.

Of course, I could opt out of it and have to pay a $220 yearly penalty. Sure, it's not much, but by principal, I should not have to pay a penalty if I choose not to purchase a service that I really don't need or want. So in all likelihood, I will opt out of it. But what happens if I get run over by Amy Sensor and have to go to the hospital? Guess who is going to pay for that? Tax payers. And I wonder how many people are in the same or similar situation that I am in? We technically can "afford" it, according to the government, but in reality we cant.

I am a Conservative, but I think that socialized health care would be a better way to go rather than this Obamacare fiasco.

She doesn't make MN look stupid, but boy does she make MN's 6th congressional district look stupid. Scratch that: the 179,240 people in her district make themselves look stupid by having voted for a critically thinking-impaired intellectual black hole as are those who were old and wise enough to vote but chose not to. She's the result of the "culture" of those most backwater of backwaters: St Could, Anoka, and whatever else not worth remembering is over there. They should be so proud to best some of the bastions of intelligence found in the reddest parts of even Texas and Oklahoma where the Earth is a whopping 6,000 years old: now that takes a mind-bending level of math that only our very own 6th congressional district 6 can match. I guess someone has to pick up the slack for the rest of MN.

I don't understand what these fools are on about. They either don't understand insurance, or the mess our health care finance system is in, or they cynically don't think most Americans understand these issues.  They aren't new issues, either.  In 1988 I was put in charge of my small employer's effort to find affordable health insurance plans, and it was a price-spiral fiasco then.  The ensuing 25 years have only made it all worse.

I'm self-employed, so I pay the other half of my Social Security/Medicare payroll tax.  I pay 100% of the cost of my family's health insurance, and have for nearly 10 years.  Over the past decade, the "sweet spot" where premiums and co-pays and out-of-pocket maximums balance has been around a $2,500 deductible.  Since I have been very fortunate in my business, I have been able to put aside $10,000 in an HSA, so I have the $10,000 deductible plan and pay $413.50/mo. for myself and two teenagers (my wife's employer, the Minneapolis Public Schools, provides her with decent coverage but family coverage would take up her entire paycheck and more, so this makes more sense).  I deduct the cost of premiums on my taxes, just as people who get their coverage at work do so before paying taxes.

If I find a better deal than I've already got through the MNsure exchange, fantastic.  If I don't, well, that's par for the course in our finance-dominated declining empire, isn't it.

In other words, absolutely nothing changes.  Except this new program gives those at the bottom of the ladder a chance to get some coverage.  The cost of subsidizing them is a helluva lot less than the cost of them going to the ER for treatment they can't pay for.  And the overall benefit to society of less severely ill people is enormous in mere financial terms, never mind less tangible terms.

The people who oppose this hate human beings and want them to suffer.  That's about all you can say.

That said, ACA ("ObamaCare", "RomneyCare," whatever) is a corporatist piece of junk written to protect the Insurance industry and the current dysfunctional medical/finance complex.  The real solution will be to put everyone in America on Medicare, and put doctors and medical industry executives on the same kind of outcome-based performance pay structure the Right thinks would be so great for teachers; as opposed to the current fee-for-procedure structure that rewards keeping people sick and treating their sicknesses.  And we'll have to have a serious discussion about the fact that people die in real life, and spending bazillions to keep somebody hooked up to machines is an abomination against humanity, whether or not it transfers enough tax money to an executive to allow him to buy another beach house.

But first things first. Baby steps.  Let's eliminate the #1 cause of personal bankruptcy, layoffs, and small-business failure.  Then let's start talking humane common sense.

It is like Crack Cocaine, once you get the Permanent Democrat Underclass addicted, you have Voters as long as you keep giving them free stuff, that the productive tax payer subsidizes.   Give them food, shelter, and healthcare and there is no motivation to work and be productive.   Cradle to Grave Nipple.

@Keith Morris

Well, I have an idea then.

Why don't we just not allow the people in the 6th to vote in the first place!

For that matter, why don't we just strip the voting rights away of those who live in any district in the entire U.S. who live in areas that are "not worth remembering" and traditionally vote Republican.

I believe it was you who made a comment on here once that was along the lines of "Who cares what outstate Minnesotans think? Leave the politicing to us educated urban dwellers in Minneapolis who know better than the rest of the state."

This coming from some fucking loser who is probably in his late 20's still riding a bicycle around town and using public transportation because he can't afford a car.

One more thing: You are too old to be hanging around at the Saloon. Not to mention that you are not that good looking either.

@swmnguy The fuss is about Republicans being nothing but corrupt bigot con men.  They will do whatever they can to hurt Obama.  They are playing to racist bigots like keny and corrupt evil rich people like the Koch brothers.  We are in a class war and people better wake up.   There is no other word for this but treason.   Republicans aren't respecting elections and they are undermining our government.  People need to punish them or else the United States is in trouble.

@Chris Peden   Except that the ACA is going to help make health insurance more affordable for any of the working people who choose to take advantage of it.  So, you and Crazy Eyes Bachmann are both wrong, which is something you both are used to hearing a lot in your lives.

MicheleBachmann

@CinBlueland  We already have debated and debated Obamacare.  Your side lost.  Over and over and over again.  Sabotaging the economy to hurt Obama is what is happening now and its treason.  This is 100% on Republicans.  What they are doing is treason and they better be held responsible for the damage they are doing.  I'm sick and tired of stupid bigot clowns like Michele Bachmann refusing to do her job.   The people want Obamacare.  That is why Mitt Romney got his ass kicked.  Republicans need to do their part for the good of the country and help make Obamacare as successful as possible.   What the Republicans are doing is sabotaging America.  If they don't start respecting the results of elections that undermines our entire government.  Facist creeps like you may think that is a good idea but sensible people know how out of line Republicans are.   Any voter that votes for Republicans are voting for treasonous assholes who are rooting for America to fail.
