Unsurprisingly, while at the memorial, she had the temerity to blame Obama for the shutdown, saying he wanted it for political purposes.
Bachmann aside, the World War II veterans' story is pretty cool. They had longstanding plans to travel from Mississippi to D.C. to check out the memorial, which is supposed to be closed during the government shutdown. But when they arrived there earlier today, they wouldn't take no for an answer.
From the Washington Post:
The U.S. Park Police allowed the bus to stop.National Park Service officials say they aren't sure what they'll do if more veterans show up wanting to spend time at the memorials, government shutdown be damned, but Bachmann already promised they won't be turned away:
"I'm not going to enforce the no stopping or standing sign for a group of 90 World War II veterans," said the officer, who declined to give his name. "I'm a veteran myself. "
Veterans piled off the buses in wheelchairs and with canes, and a shout went up when the barricades blocking the entrance to the memorial were suddenly moved and the men surged down into the memorial.
