Michele Bachmann says Republicans are happy as can be about shutdown [VIDEO]

Bachmann says she and her GOP colleagues are happy as clams to bring government to a grinding halt.
If you had any doubt about what Michele Bachmann meant when she said she was "very excited" about the prospect of a government shutdown and characterized that outcome as "exactly what [House Republicans] wanted," consider her appearance on Sean Hannity's Fox News show yesterday.

Asked by Hannity how concerned she is that some of her Republican colleagues might "capitulate" to Harry Reid and Obama, Bachmann said she isn't worried because "this is about the happiest I've seen members in a long time."

"We see we are starting to win this dialogue on a national level," Bachmann added.

Here's the video:

Despite Bachmann's claims about Republicans "starting to win this dialogue," a CBS poll released earlier this week found that a large majority of Americans disapprove of the shutdown, and a plurality blame the GOP.

From CBS:
Fully 72 percent of Americans disapprove of shutting down the federal government over differences on the Affordable Care Act; just 25 percent approve of this action...

Republicans in Congress receive more of the blame for the shutdown: 44 percent of Americans blame them, while 35 percent put more blame on President Obama and the Democrats in Congress. These views are virtually the same as they were last week before the shutdown, when Americans were asked who they would blame if a shutdown occurred.
Bachmann, however, does appear to be genuinely enthused about the mess in D.C. After all, it gives her the opportunity to serve her constituents by heading down to the World War II memorial day after day to pose for photos with veterans who are upset about the very shutdown she played an instrumental role in creating.

:::: UPDATE ::::

A WCCO report contains this classic nugget about how Bachmann was received while making one of her regular trips to the World War II memorial:
In Washington, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann was heckled when she greeted veterans who crossed shutdown barricades to visit a war memorial.

"We just want to make sure that they get open, so that the veterans can go in and see [the memorials]," the congresswoman told Eugene Morgan, a WWII veteran, who was circled by photographers.

"He's not an idiot," shouted Shemaya Klar, a Washington, D.C., resident. "The government shut down because of people like you, Michele Bachmann. You should be ashamed of yourself. Don't pander to a vet."

Rep. Bachmann and the rest of the Neo-Feudalists are actually achieving their goal.  That goal is to discredit the very idea of democratic self-governance.  Read "It Can't Happen Here" or "For Whom The Bell Tolls," particularly the woman Pilar's story, to see how fascists operate.  They claim to be forced to act by the collapse of democratic systems, which they themselves destroyed.  Then they elevate the very worst of society and massacre and loot everyone who tries to do anything constructive.  Bachmann and her ilk don't even try to rephrase Hemingway and Lewis.  If hip-hop musicians can be sued for plagiarism, these unimaginative fascists should be for sure.  Their goal is to obstruct democracy so it collapses; then convince Americans that we need a dictator "to make the trains run on time," then to assist their actual elite paymasters to loot the country, then...well, they don't care after that.  Looting the country and retribution against everyone they hold a grudge against is as far as it goes with these people.

She is an elected leader of our state. No matter how we feel, that is still a fact. The thing that irks me is knowing she'll pass up another run to go be another windbag on Fox News pulling in a 7 figure income by preaching nothing but hate.

@swmnguy

Well, after thinking about it, I think that the House should give in to Obama's demands. Neither side is going to budge, and if this shutdown continues for much longer the GOP voter base is going to start crying foul. They have no choice but to submit.

Let Obama have his toy health care legislation, let him raise the debt ceiling. If it all works, great. If it doesn't, then the blame will be solely on him and no one else (although I'm sure if both fail, the Democrats will find some way to blame Bush for it). If both measures fail miserably, the DFL can forget about 2016. But the longer that the GOP stalls over the shutdown, the more deeper they are pushing the knife into their throats. Obama has 3 long years left. The House needs to pass the fucking budget and let the chips fall where they may. They have nothing to gain but to submit.

@Chris Peden ya chris, poor people wanting health coverage is so stupid. what else is stupid in your world?  nutrients?  h2o?

swmnguy

@keny1  I think in terms of tactical politics, just about anybody would agree with that analysis.

One thing the past 25 years of American politics has convinced me of is that the over-arching problems facing this nation defy the watered-down ideologies permitted in our corporate-sanitized political arena.  Health Insurance (which is not Health Care, no matter how many times people try to blur that line) and some farcical "debt ceiling" are symptoms of the same fundamental problem. Corporate finance capitalism as we know it doesn't work.  It comes apart due to its own contradictions.  We kept it working more or less well from the late 1930s until recently by exporting our inflation, having a massive military involved in endless wars, and imposing fairly elaborate rules to keep finance from destroying itself.  The second finance got off the leash, in 1999-2000, it immediately went about cutting open the goose to get all the golden eggs at once, as we see.

You can't base an economic system on lending at interest unless you have constant (but manageable!) inflation, infinite and cheap energy, infinite resources, markets and money.  On our actual world, only money can be made infinite, and that only by making it an abstracted form of debt.  That, of course, leads to its own problems, which we see all around us today.

Obama trying to get everybody to have Health Insurance is a goal shared by every other developed country in the world, but it doesn't solve the problem that our paradoxical finance system puts in the way of people trying to get actual Health Care. It's still better than any alternative I've seen.  At least it addresses a problem which exists, rather than the nonsense about tort reform or disingenuous calls to repeal the McCarran-Ferguson Act.

I actually listened to Newt Gingrich talking way over Sean Hannity's head about this over the weekend, and despite Gingrich's assurances, it was pretty clear he didn't have a coherent idea of what the objective is, either. Some of the Republicans want to force the Federal Government to default, which only makes sense if you think you will make a killing off the collapse of the First World economy as JP Morgan and Andrew Mellon did in the 1930s.

But you're right. Whatever the Republicans are trying to do here, this isn't going to achieve it.  Unless they're really trying to destroy the economy and the notion of functional civil society.  That they might be able to do.

swmnguy
swmnguy topcommenter

@digitalprotocol  That may be the goal.  The purposes they claim to be pursuing are so incoherent and self-contradictory I'm not sure what they really have in mind.

@digitalprotocol  But what is stupid is the number of people being fired because of O care.   If you wanted to act like you care so much, then why not care for the far greater number of people that are being let go and having their taxes raised and fees raised because of this bureaucratic monstrosity.    These people far out number this arbitrary number of folks who you say do not have "Health Care."     What is your measurement of fair?

dustin_cb

@digitalprotocol @kurt124 ...If we cant afford health insurance, how are we going to pay the millitary industrial machine? Operation "Terrorize the Terrorists" is what got us into this mess to begin with. Don't worry though, when someone comes up with a better bomb we will definitely come up with a reason to burn up our old stockpiles. bombs are meant to be used, right? Our military is beholden to the corporations that supply them and be sure they will lobby for your WW3 and use the cost of having to provide healthcare as their reason, then make record profits and give the millionair marketers a bonus while reducing the companies co-pay for the insurance they allready provided for years...bla bla bla...it's funny cause it's true. This IS the world M.Bachman and her ilk are fighting for, and it's scary.

i already just work to eat. if food was free i wouldnt be working.

shut it all down, let them all fail. WW3 is rapidly approaching. in the 21st century people care less and exploit more.
