MNGOP guv hopefuls strike more liberal tone on marijuana reform than Mark Dayton

cannabis rect.jpg
When it comes to medical marijuana -- or any relaxing of pot laws whatsoever -- Gov. Mark Dayton has said, "I don't think we need another drug operating in our society."

SEE ALSO: MNGOP spent $10,500 on study that supports legalizing medical marijuana

He's also said he wouldn't sign a bill legalizing marijuana unless it has the support of law enforcement, which seems about as likely as me finding part-time work as a supermodel if this blogging thing doesn't work out.

You might assume Republicans would be even less in favor of marijuana reform than Dayton, but in some cases, you'd be wrong. For instance, consider what the leading 2014 MNGOP gubernatorial hopefuls had to say about the topic during a recent candidate forum in Rochester.

From the Rochester Post Bulletin:
Medical marijuana is one of the rare issues of the Capitol that does not break down along party lines. That became evident during a recent Republican gubernatorial forum in Rochester. The five candidates were asked whether they would be willing to sign a bill legalizing marijuana. Hibbing teacher Rob Farnsworth, Sen. Dave Thompson and Hennepin County Commissioner Jeff Johnson all said "yes." Wayzata businessman Scott Honour and former House Speaker Kurt Zellers said "no."
As we told you about earlier today, over the weekend, Johnson won an MNGOP straw poll of the leading 2014 Republican gubernatorial candidates. His statement at the Rochester forum was a slight departure from what he said about medical pot during a MinnPost interview earlier this year:

medpot.JPG

In any event, with medical marijuana supporters planning a big push for a legalization bill during the upcoming session, pot reform could become a major topic during next's year gubernatorial campaign. And unless Dayton has a change of heart (or Johnson reverts his position back to something akin to "I don't know"), ganja-friendly Minnesotans might find themselves in the unusual position of agreeing with Republicans. (Some Republicans, at least -- others, of course, are less liberal about marijuana.)

Here is the thing...the minute any two americans make 100 millions dollars manufacturing/selling pot in California, Colorado, and Washington and get smart enough to funnel a little of that dough into several tax-deferred PACs that backs any candidate that would expand their opportunities to make more money, this game is over. House of cards. It's been philosophical up to now, but once there is a lobby to whom to make promises in exchange for cash, this is done.

I'm a liberal DFLer. He gave himself a well-deserved F for his time in the senate. I don't believe he should be in public service. He isn't a strong leader in any sense of what makes a strong leader. If he wants to do good, which I know he does, he should serve on some non-profit boards. I feel like that's what his true calling should be. He needs to stop trying to be something he isn't. All said, I respect who he is and what he values, but he's ineffectual.

Voters looking to end the war on drugs voting republican? Hmmm...not likely. Perhaps some 18 year olds that vote on a single issue...maybe?

But anyone old enough to have a modicum of patience, with a high school education, and the ability to engage in critical thinking will simply wait for the democratic candidate with a similar viewpoint to emerge. The simple fact is that it's not all that hard to get marijuana now and provided you're not walking/driving around with it in your pocket like an idiot, what's the rush? The only people current policy hurts are those that would benefit from it medicinally and idiots.

Legalize it! The war on drugs has failed.....60% of cartel profits are from Marijuana sales in the U.S......time to rewrite this policy! http://virg.in/wds Global Commission on Drug Policy read the new report at this link, global insight! AND WHY DID THEY SPEND 10G they could have just read the "GLOBAL COMMISSION on DRUG POLICY report" and if Daytona doesn't agree (time to go) well then he is an idiot because the TOP MINDS in the WORLD DO!!! READ THE REPORT, I DID.....our State is so far behind in so many areas it's really sad....and it's time to make a real positve difference for our State and America!

Legislators don't want it because they are still catering to the old and paranoid. Truth is, you can't keep something that you can grow in a closet out of the hands of users that want it. You just create a black market, and then pay for it on both sides (cops and prison/rehab). What needs to happen is anything under an ounce is allowed. They need a test for it on the roads if you are impaired. Then they need to tax the hell out of it.

Dayton apparently doesn't realize 7/10 Americans are on some sort of prescription drug. I would rather have my son on weed than Prozac.

Nope we Libertarians (Classically Liberal) not Progressive (NeoLiberal) Are taking over. Maybe some of you on the left should do the same to your party that we are doing on the right because the fact is we are moving toward the center not further right like the talking heads would like you to believe. We are Anti-War, ProFreedom plain and simple.

Good thing we can get legally shitfaced, make fools of ourselves, operate a vehicle and potentially kill innocent people, damage our liver and possibly develop alcoholism. But smoking weed which can make people more open minded, help people with eating disorders, help pain, help insomnia etc etc etc, pfff That's bad because its a "Drug!" Don't even get me started on these bullshit pharmaceutical pushers.

"Vote on a single issue" you say.  Like gay marriage or abortion?  Oh no...Very few people would ever do that  ;)

mingtran

Depends on the republican. Unless you forgot, Ron Paul has been the only candidate to support any sort of legalization. He was last years MN republican prez nominee. He is of course republican in name only, but all democrats are way too pussy to demand legalization.

Your blind faith is blinding you.

@Justin Hamilton Liberals have legalized gay marriage in this state.  They will be the ones that legalize marijuana.  Libertarians are nothing but dreamers.   They never accomplish anything because Republicans don't believe in freedom.  They are fascists that want to oppress and control women, gays, and minorities.

@TheConservativeJerk @DavidFoureyes Hey, I didn't say the concept was unique ;) - (or sufficient to sway an election...there is no money in abortion after all) ...and let's face it, the worldview of the persons voting for those other two things is to firmly established, they'd have voted for the associated parties/candidates anyway...

I doubt there have been a ton of firmly-established rural, white, evangelical 18 year old males that were totally democrats until they discovered the party's platform on abortion.

The thing with potheads is: They're everywhere (physically, and metaphysically...man).

@mingtran *looks around* Are you serious? Remind me how well Ron Paul did in any of his presidential runs...My guess is that the pothead to whom the libertarian platform appeals is about as good as getting to a poll as he is at getting to a door without a pizza behind it. If "fuck it" was a political philosophy...

@mingtran are you an asian tranny?

Ron Paul has never been a viable candidate for Prez.  THis is a state issue and your limited understanding of governance automatically makes anything you say meaningless.

remember mingtran, this is about weed and getting high. That is all. maybe helping those in pain as well. Mostly, getting high and making reality a bit more tolerable

Stand for something, otherwise all you spout is noise. And stop challenging me. I feel like a bully constantly using you as my mop.

@mingtran if he is so viable why isnt he the prez. im not saying i dont like his ideas, im saying its a waste of time to get behind someone who is unelectable.

Not viable? List all things wrong with Ron Paul. Then list all things wrong with Barack Obama. See who's list is longer.

"Rasmussen is the Fox news polling firm" - they are both seperate business entities. Stop lying.

Any and every source is biased.

I posted plenty of facts. Cite yours.

Libertarians easily mocked? :) Is that why everything Ron Paul said would happen is happening? and his son is one of the most high profile members of congress? .... and EVERYONE loves Obama right? Never mind polls or all the fuck ups. Everyone loves him because you say so, and everything you say is right.... no matter how much the mingtran proves you otherwise :)

MicheleBachmann

@mingtran Rasmussen is the Fox News polling firm.  They have a well known bias that has been shown with statistics.  I know this because I pay attention.  You don't know anything, that's why all you ever do is throw out insults but no facts.   You posted 8 times on this board yet zero facts were posted.  You are a very very stupid person.  You are the reason libertarians are such easily mocked jackasses.

@mingtran If you survey people about the individual parts of Obamacare and what it actually does its a very popular program.  Only when you ask a generic question like "Do you approve of Obamacare" do the numbers go negative.  That's because stupid people like you have been tricked by Republicans into thinking Obamacare is something its not.   You know how I can tell you are stupid?   You get mad at Joe for watching MSNBC so you cite a Fox News poll.   Stupid stupid ming.

Besides those numbers don't look so bad when you compare them to the approval ratings of the Republican party which is reviled by the American people.

mingtran
mingtran topcommenter

Apparently only in your warped mind. Yesterday from Rasmussen: 47% job approval. 52% believe our new health system will make us worse off. You must get your news from rachel maddow, john stewart, and hollywood celebrities. Nap time for mnjoe

MNjoe

@mingtran Only in your warped mind Ming - not for most Americans because the media (in their ObamaCare web frenzy - which you seem to have fallen for like most Republican'ts) haven't reported Obama's latest poll numbers which are actually UP after that "horrible" week. ObamaCare is just fine - it being implemented and has and will help millions of Americans get better access to the heathcare system.  Glad to know you see liberalism as "trending" because I think even you have enough common sense to know about trends.

mingtran

I didn't know you had exclusive ownership rights to the word "adept". Then, I use the word I copied from you (because you're so rad) as a noun, not an adjective. All because you used the word last week in a post i supposedly read. GOT IT.

Belief is the death of intelligence.

digitalprotocol
digitalprotocol topcommenter

@mingtran ive never ever read adept as a noun - its obvious that you learned that word from my posts - looked up the definition and used it. great. thanks for the accolades.

im pretty sure adept as a noun is dying or dead- perhaps you've revived the noun but i truly doubt it.

and you couldnt be more wrong about reality...it exists only as "your" perception and nobody elses. if you believe in reality then you are dreaming

mingtran
mingtran topcommenter

Making fun of a person who uses a word correctly, but not the "cool way". Your reality only exists in the minds of others. You can't create shit, even in your dreams. After your first couple whoopins, you should've realized you can't fuck with the mingtran.

digitalprotocol

@mingtran reality is wrong. Dreams are for real.

i taught you the word adept last week you simpleton. common usage is as a adjective these days. no longer used as a noun - you are stupid

mingtran

You are too weak to pull that off. You let others create your reality. If you wish to be an adept, you need to surround yourself with adepts, not other cro-mags.
