Mpls officers want off-duty cops to be able to carry guns at Vikings games

Minneapolis Police Federation officials aren't fans of a new NFL policy banning off-duty cops from carrying guns into stadiums.

Officers argue they should be able to pack heat in NFL stadiums because -- God forbid -- if there was some sort of shooting at a game, they might be able to use their firearms to take out the gunman and save lives. But NFL officials say games are already staffed with sufficient security and they want to limit the number of guns inside stadiums on game days.

In an interview with WCCO, Minneapolis Police Federation President John Delmonico argued that security concerns aside, the simple fact is state laws allowing off-duty cops to pack heat trumps the NFL's new policy.

"State law governs the facts that we can carry our guns off-duty in any public facility and any facility in the city of Minneapolis, which encompasses the dome," Delmonico said, alluding to the fact that both the Metrodome and soon-to-be-constructed Zygi-land were built with the help of taxpayer dollars.

Delmonico wrote a letter to Attorney General Lori Swanson asking her to weigh in on the legal controversy, 'CCO reports. It's unclear whether she'll follow up on the request.

But check out this in-the-stands ruckus during last year's Thursday night Vikings-Bucs game (LOL at the Josh Freeman jersey!)...

... and ask yourself -- do you really want guns to be anywhere near these drunken hot messes whether they work as cops for a living or not?

Only if anyone with their conceal/carry permit can. They are not special. When they are off duty they should be OFF duty

I think they should carry Viking weapons. And drink from the skulls of their enemies!

Does this include the off-duty officers who get drunk and use racial slurs in public?

off duty cops don't need that. think of how many times in the news we hear about an"off duty cop" over stepping their bounds, and for one thing they are trained to use physical strength/hand to hand combat.. but most are bitches trigger happy. if off duty cops can carry why not any one else. "off duty cops" my god sickens me, if they didn't have little penises they may not need to carry a gun when their not at work! o yeah did I mention half or more are just as illegal in their actions as any criminal.. but having a badge makes it ok. O yeah and when this does go through and a off duty cop shoots a bystander they still get their paid leave!!! F****n crooked government and city workers/official.. protect and serve, yeah that's rich

Train them in karate. If you want the police to have an edge in all situations, train them in martial arts. It would be much more effective, cost less, and keep a large number of people healthier.

I don't get why people thing registered gun owners are the problem. They are not statistically speaking (very small % of crimes). Truth be told, most signs posted banning guns are not legal signs anyway.  But, I don't agree with any cops getting more power. They abuse what they have and make everyday citizens feel threatened quite often.

does an off duty teacher have the right to discipline or teach some kid? do off duty garbagemen start picking up garbage for no reason. Its called jurisdiction and it is best left to the professionals ON DUTY.

If that's the case, why not soldiers? They have proper training as well, just without the ego of a mpls pig...I swear, they feel they never have enough power (smh)

Yeah because that's just what football needs is even more boozed up alpha males, only this time with weapons. Cops are violent thugs... Every bit as violent, every bit as dangerous and every bit as thuggish as the "criminals" they "protect" us from. Our society would be better off without them.

yeah, because we have seen that drunk cops never get out of control and take out their shortcomings on the unsuspecting public. good god. we are seriously safer with no police force than with this comedy of errors.

Right - good idea. Armed, possibly drinking Mpls cops with a lot of black guys running around. What could possibly go wrong?

Kevin Ingram, are you a cop? I've seen too many behave poorly with their guns when they are of duty. To the point where I don't even want most of them to have guns on duty.

Why do the Vikings and NFL setting the rules  isn't it "the people's" stadium?

May as well, drunk undercover cops punch people at Andover bars and put them in the ICU, may as well let them shoot people too

If they are able to carry guns, they should be BARRED from drinking alcohol.

No. They are a normal citizen at that point. Even with a permit to carry I can't bring my firearm into the dome, why should they?

So, they're the LAST people who should have guns!

@k2yeb I carry *everywhere* that I'm not getting frisked before entry.  And I don't go places that do that.  If I am asked to leave, I will politely vacate the premises.  Otherwise, I'd rather I know where my gun is than leave it 'locked up' in my car where it is completely out of my control.
