Ten days remain to hop on a lime green bike before the end of the 2013 season, but Nice Ride's already tallying its rentals for the year. The numbers show that the bike share program's fourth season has been its most popular yet.

In 2013, the program saw 305,000 rentals, a 10 percent increase from 2012's count of 274,333. All together, over four years on the roads, the bikes have been pedaled on 897,884 trips.

Yearly subscribers are up too: to 68,000 from last year's 54,451.

Most of those rentals are still happening in downtown Minneapolis, with other hot spots near lakes and trails, like along the Midtown Greenway:

These increases are nice, but 2013 was a "breakthrough" year for another reason, Nice Ride director Bill Dossett explains in the report: It was the year bike sharing went from being experimental to mainstream. Over the past few months, cities like New York, Chicago, and San Francisco have sprouted Nice Ride-like programs of their own.

While the bikes go into hibernation for the winter, the people behind Nice Ride will be back in the lab, plotting more St. Paul stations (a "key priority," per the report), its Greater Minnesota expansion, and more tweaks throughout the system.
