Vikings say $975 million not enough for new stadium

Picture these same doors as in the rendering, but... 40 feet shorter.
Project costs tend to run up once construction starts. But for the money pit that is the new Vikings stadium, even before November's groundbreaking, project planners are finding that $975 million isn't cutting it.

As Vikings Vice President Lester Bagley told the Star Tribune: "We only have $975 million in the budget, and there's only so many things you can get under that number."

The Twins, remember, pitched in more of their own money when costs for Target Field jumped, investing $195 million instead of the planned-for $130 million. Not so for the Vikings.

Instead, the team is looking at axing a list of items that includes, per the Strib:
A 400-stall parking garage a block north of the stadium, a skyway linked to a ramp a block south, two large escalators and as much as 40 feet from the height of five massive, pivoting glass doors at the venue's main entrance.
The re-evaluation comes after preliminary bids last week were $20 million to $30 million over-budget.

Not to say that the Vikings will go without all their bells and whistles. The team has agreed to advance $13.1 million for wish list items like a Wi-Fi system, the Strib reports.

But don't interpret that as an increase in the Wilfs' investment. At the end of construction, the team will get paid back from a $62 million contingency fund.

Deadspin's take on the situation reiterates where things stand. "Gov. Mark Dayton has aggressively and repeatedly pitched the project as 'the People's Stadium,'" writes Barry Petchesky. "He's right--the people of Minnesota will be paying for it for a long while."

Why doesn't Wilf swindle the remaining millions from other ultra-wealthy people he knows? Wouldn't that be faster/easier?

In order to get the 300 number they have to add in all the free skating they allow in the dome.

Jason, the NFL is in no way a legit business. They are a monopoly and their business is highly subsidized by tax payers when they don't need to be. The point about Detroit is that they have a football stadium/team downtown and they still went bankrupt, so to say a city does well only when we have a professional sports team is not 100% factual. No need to get all hostile. They are observations that NFL stadiums do not provide year round funds to the city as much as say, a convention center, or something that isn't only operational 1 day a week for a few months of the year and have self contained vendors. So, if you say there is no facts behind my observations, then prove it. Where are your facts to prove me wrong? It's been shown Convention centers bring in more money consistently throughout a fiscal year than sports stadiums and bring in more money to the area than stadiums.

"A 400-stall parking garage a block north of the stadium, a skyway linked to a ramp a block south, two large escalators and as much as 40 feet from the height of five massive, pivoting glass doors at the venue's main entrance." Won't need it. Carry on. Though I feel like we shouldn't need anything fancy. In retrospect, if the Golden Gophers and the Vikes had agreed years ago on building a new stadium, the U and the Vikes should've gone in together to build New Metrodome. Now we're stuck with the U paying for TCF Bank stadium and the Vikes paying for another stadium, both paid for indirectly by taxpayers. Oh well.

I wonder how Green Bay gets their state and /fans/ to pay for things.

Wilf sittin' in the governor's office: "Tell your taxpayers to pay for it Mark; or I'm moving my team to the next place that gives me a better deal. I hear Los Angeles has /two/ sites that will fight for me. Your state's Vikings fans may have a psychological attachment to history and tradition, but I am happy to ship my players anywhere that wants 'em. I'll even get a name-change on someone else's dime, and the money to sell naming rights on someone else's stadium. You lose!"

Call Zigi's bluff and say no.  He knows he's asking for the moon, he wants to see just how desperate we are and just how much he can get while he's got plans brewing elsewhere anyway.

Meanwhile, the Twins happily play outdoors in the cold, wind, rain or snow and built the stadium for a fraction of that.

Maybe the Vikes should start holding bake sales and other fund raisers to get money from folks who actually can afford to give it away, instead of taking it away from taxpayers that are struggling. It's a sad day that stadium funding is a priority when so many other parts of our society are just crumbling apart.

We just drove past the present Vikings stadium tonight. I can't help thinking that that new $18 million roof works just fine, and $975 million could pay for lots of scholarships, fix a lot of bridges, pay a lot of teachers, etc.

I guess a billion dollars doesn't buy what it used to.  Funny, it's a shit-ton of money when people are complaining about spending it on schools or health care.  But it's pocket change when it comes to a 10 day-a-year stadium.  Because the other 355 days a year, the crummy old Dome still works OK.  It's just those 10 days that we need a stadium that apparently costs more than a Billion bucks.

I hear a lot of stuff like this.  How we have to spend a Trillion dollars a year on the military (considering all the different departments; nukes are Energy, intel is black-budget; State pays for a lot of military stuff, etc.), and another Trillion a year to buy worthless mortgage-backed securities from the banks in return for T-Bonds.  When I hear shit like this, I don't ever, EVER, EVER want to hear we can't afford to fix bridges, get health care to people, take care of kids whose families are fucked up, have decent education, etc. We could pay for all of that actually useful stuff that we all need for the rest of our lives for just what we waste in a few years of military spending, finance industry fraud, and just to put a few little sprinkles on top, fucking football palaces.

Fine. Build the stupid football stadium.  But don't ever talk to me about how we can't afford the necessities ever again.

The Dome isn't fine, I do believe it is a benefit to have a NFL team here, but I think we should renegotiate the deal since the implications the Wilf's have faced recently. Does LA really want to make a stadium deal with owners who have been charged with racketeering?
