Best Buy latest retailer to begin Black Friday on Thanksgiving

A past Black Friday at Best Buy.
When Target opened at 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day last year, the decision sparked outrage, and 376,998 signatures on a change.org petition urging the retailer to reconsider for employees' sake.

This year, Best Buy is going one further. Stores will open at 6 p.m Thanksgiving Day, right around the time a lot of families sit down for turkey.

"Last year, millions of people made it clear that they wanted to shop on Thanksgiving evening," the company said in today's announcement.

More than 1,000 stores in 47 states will get the early opening time, and stay open through the night until 10 p.m. on Black Friday. That's more than 24 hours for the gadget-hungry to stock up.

State laws in Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island prohibit the same Turkey Day bonanza. There, customers will have to content themselves with running in the doors at 12:01 a.m. on Black Friday.

But yet they will be packed and people lining up hours before they open regardless of the weather. Guess people who shop there r to busy to go online. So Victoria opening at 8 that night. Have not seen anyone complaining about that

Years ago (we had bought a new VHS, so...) we brought back our VHS machine because it had eaten a brand-new tape and both were ruined. I demanded both be replaced. The kid behind the counter sneered at the request and said "You realize your 90-day warrant is already two-thirds up, don't you?" I've never shopped there again. I worked at Best Buy corporate, I'll TAKE their money, but I won't give them any.

Wait, so we can buy sub-par electronics from unknowledgable teenagers, and pay a 900% markup on cables even *earlier* now?? That's amazing! (Seriously, who even goes there anymore?? Not buying your electronics online is foolish...)

and still, no one will really want to shop there.

Not everyone celebrates thanksgiving. You are selfish for thinking they do. If you want to keep thanksgiving sacred for you and your family, that is fine, choose to stay home. If some world rather work or shop, that should be their choice as well. I cant afford not to work on thanksgiving and black friday. I will be working both, by choice. And if i feel i would like to do a little shopping on thanksgiving evening for the first time, i think its good that i now get that choice. Though i probably wont.

Boo! Boo! Boo! Let's have a holiday that focuses on families and friends and forget shopping for just one day!

And there will be a ton of people flocking to shut the gobble up as they dictate shopping habbits. Retailers wouldn't do it if lemmings weren't falling off the cliff for a perceived discount.

I don't know about other peoples families but in my family we have all said our goodbyes to each other by about 5 anyway and are all on our way home. We usually get together about 11:00 and eat at noon and hang out and watch football for a little bit then it's goodbye. I think 6 is plenty of time to spend with family. When I worked at Blockbuster I had to be there at 10 in the morning and worked until 7 missing all of Thanksgiving and Christmas. So needless to say I don't feel the least bit bad for these people.

If people would just stay home, the retailers wouldn't be doing this - problem is, the sheep will be lining up at the doors for this crap.

If someone gets excited by Black Friday I have no choice but to be less less enthusiastic about them afterwards. Materialism 101.

BigLex nailed it. I very rarely get to hang with my family anymore, which being an independent 28 year old is fine, but I still love my family and like to spend time witht them. We all make a day out of Black Friday and go out for breakfast afterword and have a good time. No one is forcing any of these employees to work at Best Buy. I worked at Blockbuster in my teens and worked all the holidays. I didn't bitch because one, my parents taught me not to be a whiner and two I knew up front that I would have to work these days. If theres money to be made its business 101 to be open. These CEO's aren't in the being nice business. And again, this is a very #firstworldproblem.

We have made shopping on thanksgiving/black Friday a family tradition the past few years right after dinner. I have also worked on both thanksgiving and Christmas eve b4 when I used to work in retail. And I personally didnt think it was as bad as people make it out to be... the fact of the matter is no 1 is forcing these gripers to work in retail. Don't like it, dont work in retail! Its as simple as that. But in retail it just comes with the territory. They told me up front when I got interviewed at Target that I would have to work on Thanksgiving. It was not like it was a surprise. Dont like it, dont take the job!

This really sucks for the staff that have to work instead of spending time with their family. Boo Best Buy. I won't be there

We only have ourselves to blame for it...people will go that's why there open. And also, although this sucks for these people that have to work, this is the very definition of a 'first world problem'.
