Gutted deer lay strewn outside Von Hanson's Meats in Blaine [PHOTO]

Lisa Negawo was on her way to work yesterday afternoon when she encountered a gruesome scene outside the Von Hanson's Meats store in Blaine.

Strewn outside a back entrance to the business were a number of dead, gutted, well-past-rigor-mortis deer. Below the jump is a photo she took (WARNING -- it's graphic):

Reached for comment by City Pages, Negawo, an employee at a bar near Von Hanson's, said coworkers told her the deer had been outside the meat shop all day yesterday.

"It's a meat place, so I guess I can see why it's legit they're there," Negawo said in reference to the deer corpses. "But it shouldn't be outside. Nobody wants to see that."

Negawo said she went into Von Hanson's to ask them what was up with the deer and was told, "Welcome to hunting season in Blaine."

"Is that normal?" Negawo, who recently moved to Minnesota from Kansas City, asked. "Because it shouldn't be."

A message left at Von Hanson's office wasn't immediately returned.

Wow, our Jacobson, Minnesota deer are suffering, due to snow. Some of us love meat, but respect those that do not.

Yes, weather this year is awful everywhere, but appreciate the fact that here, in Minnesota, (not Fargo) we plow, we go to work, we only whine, when we are out of wine. Opps, my AAA officer is now reading my post. Oh, and no weed since 1971.

Don't believe everything you read! This article is ridiculous and clearly "Lisa Negawo" has nothing better to with her time then complain on issues she knows nothing about, not to mention how cold it gets in Minnesota. It was well below freezing early in the week! Welcome to Minnesota Lisa! Your a long way from Missouri :)

Best part about this. She was on her way to work at a bar and grill. What the hell do they serve for food there? $100 says it's not shitaki mushrooms.

Apparently very few people know the facts about where their food comes from.   Would you like to know the fact behind your Cheerios?   How about knowing what goes into your "gluten free" cakes, cookies, waffles, pancakes, breads, muffins.

I believe this should not be okay to do. Yeah, it's deer. Yeah, it's hunting season. Yeah, its a meat shop and what do you expect? I don't think other meat shops would let deer lay on the ground, in an ally way. I read that they had been there all day. I've been hunting before and it's a lot of work. The customer deserves their deer handled in a better way. If this is happening when I drop my deer off to be processed, I'd rather just do it myself.

I would be one pissed off hunter to see my hard work laying in the street like that.

the person responsible should be fined and banned form hunting forever...

I have seen how VH handles deer up close and they do a great job. It's not like those deer sat outside all day. Maybe the person who started this should have waited to see how long it really took to get them inside.

No Paul, I'm fairly certain that the folks Dylan is referring to as dipshits are, in fact, dipshits.

I grew up country. This is not shocking. It's not as if there were innards laying all over the place or they were actually cleaning the deer out in back. Not everyone can handle this much reality, but trust me, the shit you see on factory farms is far more obscene than this.

Whatever your opinion on hunting and the sight of dead deer, leaving those deer laying in the parking lot is ridiculous. It shows a real lack of respect for the customer. I see something like this and I start to wonder about what I am getting when I come to pick up my deer. How do I know they gave me my deer? How do I know they gave me all the meat from my deer? They can't keep the carcasses in order how are the going to keep the processed meat straight?

Rick Edwards

There are gauze game bags thay are designed to contain animals of this size and perhaps hunters might do well to consider using them when dropping off animals for processing. But we may do well to consider how far we have gone to compartmentalize sickness, aging and death as a society and whether or not this is good for us as a people. And we may agree or not about whether hunting is disgusting but I think we can all agree being judgment is.

could we make a rule that stipulates : you must be willing to slaughter and process the animals you intend to eat or you must eat tofu as your main source of protein for the rest of your life. - dear lord I sound like Ron Swanson

when you live that far out it's hard to believe this is a shocking sight. my neighbors used to hang their deer up in their yard on some lawn sculpture. and that was our bus stop. haha. in minnetonka. i have nothing but respect for people who actually kill their own meat. yeah, it doesn't actually grow in cryovac in the butcher case.

I wonder how many of the hunters know that their carcass were left outside to spoil since Von Hansons is too busy to properly clean and process them.  The weather today would make that a moot point, but it might not have on that day.

Hopefully, the Blaine health inspector will do his job and followup on this.

I get that it is the process and reality, but I am not a hunter, I do not enjoy hunting, and I don't want to have to look at something like that.

Wahhhhh. Hunter took his/her deer to get processed. Shocking news!!!

I understand vegans being repulsed, but it has always baffled me that some meat eaters cannot stomach the sight of the carcasses of animals they eat. Are we really that far removed from the food we eat. Sadly, the answer is yes. I guess in the immortal words of Chris Farley "I can get a good look at a T-bone by sticking my head up a bull's ass, but I'd rather take a butcher's word for it."

Stupid thread, deer hunting in Minnesota and Wisconsin is a tradition that dates back hundreds of years if you don't like it then why are you driving around back to look, my deer is laying out back of a meat market now in albertville and I write this from a deer stand if you don't like it then ignore it it a staging area for deer about to be processed and it plenty cold for them to be out for days and be fine

Lol, have you ever seen a deer? A contractor bag is 33x48. An average adult white tail is much bigger, wouldn't even fit in two bags because they are taller than that, not only longer. As far as it being on the ground, the fur and hide aren't eaten. They are removed and the rest of the meat is cleaned and processed in a sterile environment. Your comment about salad, you know that it grows in the dirt and they use manure to fertilize it right? Then they wash it before shipping and then you wash it (I hope) before eating it. You look like a pretty big guy, probably eat a lot of food. You should educate yourself about where it comes from and how it's processed. I bet you'd be surprised at what you learn.

Lol I'm sure a contractor bag would work fine...food of any kind is not suppose to be sitting their marinating on a nasty alley floor...are you serious...:)

Von Hanson's does an incredible job in getting the deer "put away". Just sit down and keep quiet. If you don't like it, don't look.

Democratic - of, relating to, or supporting democracy or it's principles. Has more than one meaning. Wasn't a jab at anyone's political preference. I just don't think this laughable article should bring people to the point of name calling, swearing or threatening violence. Have a debate, sure all for it. But if you need to use vulgar language and name calling to make your point, it really means you had no point at all. Type as if your kids were reading it....

@Kasey McManus Smith I Facebook from my tree stand all the time. I bring my camera with too to take pictures off the wildlife. It is as much about connecting with nature as it is about harvesting a deer for me.

Nope, not all of them.  But I got spoiled steaks at the one in Brainerd, beef jerky that tasted like smoked fish at the one in Elk River and now I see this is how they operate in Blaine..  Don't really see a need to go to the rest of them.

Actually, the direct opposite of connecting with nature would be purchasing food from a laboratory, something you advocate. Teenagers have no business trying to school adults in the philosophies.
